Chapter 287 Fever in the Middle of the Night

"Who told you not to eat meat? You didn't buy any for home, but you still ate plenty!"

Don't think I don't know. Every time we go out, you sneak a lot of pig's head meat from the braised meat shop at the entrance of the community!

You still complain that Yu Hai gives you too little money for groceries? Nobody lives like you, getting at least half a pound of pig's head meat every day, and sometimes switching to a braised chicken leg when you get tired of it.

I didn't say it in front of Yu Hai because I was too embarrassed!

Yu Hai's father has been so devoted to our family. Look at you, you've never been able to shake your habit of stealing food!

"If you don't want to work here anymore, then leave. I gave the money to my dad. If you want more money, go ask my dad. I don't have any!"

After arguing for a while, Liu Lan's mother realized she couldn't win against her daughter, so she angrily slammed the door and went back to her room to sleep, without even cleaning up the dishes.

Liu Lan silently washed the dishes, looking at the messy kitchen, which was covered in grease and dust.

She sighed heavily. Her mother had this ability; she could turn the imperial palace's Golden Hall into a beggar's den. She began to clean carefully.

It took more than an hour to clean the kitchen, living room, dining room, and bathroom.

Rubbing her aching back, Liu Lan looked around her neat and clean home and smiled with satisfaction.

Ever since middle school, when classmates went to her house to deliver homework, they would look at her with disgust when they saw her house, which looked like a pigsty.

She secretly vowed that no matter how busy or tired she was, she would keep her surroundings clean and tidy, and not be like her mother who was complacent and lived a life of poverty.

Liu Lan was sleeping with her child in her arms when she was woken up in the middle of the night by Yu Duoduo's heavy breathing.

I groggily touched the baby's diaper, but there was no urine. Is the little guy hungry?

Liu Lan sat up with her eyes half-closed, yawning widely due to lack of sleep.

I got up to make formula for my son, but after taking a few steps out of bed, I belatedly realized that my son had been very well-behaved tonight!

She doesn't cry when she's hungry; instead, she'll whine and whimper to remind her. After preparing warm water and adding formula, Liu Lan was busy for a while before waking up from her drowsiness.

I picked up my child from the bed, only to find that his face was bright red.

My son has a fever!

Liu Lan was so frightened that she was completely sober. She touched the child's forehead and found it to be burning hot, with even his breath being hot and thin.

Liu Lan was so frightened that her legs went weak. She ran into her mother's room and pushed her mother away with all her might.

"Mom, Mom, wake up! Duoduo has a fever!"

Liu Lan's mother turned over, her sleep disturbed, and was very angry. With a "smack", she slapped Liu Lan's arm hard.

Liu Lan couldn't feel the pain anymore, but she was extremely panicked. "Get up quickly, help me pack my things, and take the child to the hospital!"

Her loud shout, choked with sobs, finally woke her mother.

The mother and daughter hurriedly wrapped the baby up, packing diapers, toilet paper, baby clothes, formula, and bottles into a large bag.

I rushed out of the house as if fleeing a disaster, ran to the entrance of the residential area, and groped my way to flag down a car in the dark.

It's exactly five o'clock now, the sky is still dark and it's almost dawn, and the streetlights have just been turned off.

Liu Lan and her mother stood on the empty street and waited for a long time, but they couldn't hail a taxi.

The taxis had been running all night and had all gone home to rest. The first bus hadn't even started running yet, and sanitation workers were sweeping the streets in the distance.

Liu Lan paced anxiously, stamping her feet and craning her neck to look anxiously at both ends of the road.

Liu Lan's mother was also extremely anxious, "Damn it, when we don't need a car, there are taxis all over the streets."

I urgently need a car, where have all these brats been loitering?

No wonder they're all poor bastards; they don't care about making money at all. They won't even come out to run when there are people waiting for the bus!

Liu Lan was so anxious she was almost delirious. She stamped her feet and muttered under her breath, "Where's the taxi? Why isn't the taxi here yet?"

At 5:20, we finally saw a taxi approaching from a distance.

Liu Lan and her mother waved frantically and finally managed to flag down the taxi. Liu Lan's mother opened the back door and let her daughter get in with the child.

Just as Liu Lan's mother was about to get into the car, a young man carrying a travel bag rushed out of the residential area and yanked open the passenger door.

"Who are you? Get out of the car! This is the car I called!" the young man snapped.

"Young man, get out of the car. Didn't you see that we were the ones who stopped the car first?" Liu Lan's mother scolded.

The young man got into the passenger seat and turned to Liu Lan and her daughter, saying, "You've got it wrong. I ordered this car yesterday; it was specially sent to pick me up."

"Hurry up and get out of the car! I'm in a hurry to get to the airport! Driver, drive!"

Liu Lan's mother was furious. "We've been waiting all night. We were the ones who stopped the car first."

Get out of the car! You're so young, don't you understand the importance of first come, first served? How dare you try to take a taxi from an old man like me!

"Driver, drive! To the Municipal Hospital, hurry up and get the IV drip started! If you delay us, I'll report you to your taxi company!"

The young man was angry. He had paid a deposit the day before to catch his flight and asked the driver to pick him up on time.

The two women started fighting with him over a taxi. If they continued to argue and he missed his flight, that would be a huge problem.

"Driver, I'm in a hurry, what do you think we should do?" Unable to reason with the two women, the young man had no choice but to leave the problem to the driver.

"Auntie, please get off the bus. This car was booked in advance by this young man."

They needed to catch a flight, and if I made them late, I couldn't compensate them!

The driver didn't want to deal with this shrewish and unreasonable old lady, but he had no choice but to bite the bullet and go ahead, since he had already accepted the young woman's deposit.
