Chapter 4 Past Life

The atmosphere became heavy for a moment, and Yu Hai seemed to have lost his ability to speak, unable to utter a word. "Chen Hong, I have something I want to say to you,"

Mr. Yu broke the incredibly awkward atmosphere by speaking up. He looked at Chen Hong, then at Yu Hai, and tightened his grip on his grandson's arm.

“I don’t care about your divorce, and I can’t control it. I’ll move back to the old house from now on. But I still need to look after Yangyang. He’s my grandson. When you’re busy, you can leave him with me. You can’t stop me from taking care of him. Yu Hai, since you’ve decided to divorce, then divorce amicably. I support Chen Hong staying in the village so I can still watch my grandson grow up. That way, I’ll feel more at ease.”

Yu's father said to Yu Hai, "Actually, I don't want you to get divorced. Chen Hong is a good girl. We've gotten along like father and daughter all these years. You're away from home most of the time, and Chen Hong takes care of everything for me. She's very good to me. Which old man in the village doesn't envy her? You don't want such a good woman. You'll regret it in the future. I know you've grown too big for your britches. Our little place can't keep you here."

“I won’t go to Jinan with you after your divorce. I’ll stay in the old house. I’ve lived in the village my whole life, and I’m not used to going out. It’s better to stay in the village and be with my grandson. As for the money, if you have any to spend, don’t ask Chen Hong for it. Chen Hong has to make a living with the child. The child is young, and she can’t go out to work. Just leave it to her and the child. After all, you’re the only one who can earn money. Leave some room for them.”

Before he could finish speaking, Mr. Yu's eyes reddened, and tears streamed down his face. The old man was truly heartbroken as he thought about how his daughter-in-law had taken care of him all these years.

“Dad, don’t cry, and don’t be too sad. Try to think positively. Look, apart from the fact that we have to live separately, life isn’t much different from before. We’re both in the village. You can take care of the child if you want. That way, I’ll have an easier time and be able to do more work. You’ve already helped me out. It’s just a matter of getting a divorce certificate. It’s not a big deal.”

Chen Hong reassured Yu's father that he was a good man, gentle in nature, and without any bad habits; he wasn't picky about food or clothing. Although he wasn't in good health and couldn't do heavy work, Chen Hong was actually quite content that he could help take care of the children.

Looking at his father's tearful face, Yu Hai felt a pang of sadness. "Dad, don't be sad. Things have come to this point, and there's nothing I can do. Chen Hong is right. Even though we're divorced, life hasn't changed much. I'm not home much anyway, and she's the one who's supporting the family all by herself."

Yu Hai also comforted his elderly father, then turned to Chen Hong and said, "Chen Hong, I am very grateful that you didn't make things difficult for me. I know I'm sorry for what happened. Don't worry, even if we get divorced, I'm still Yu Yang's father, and I won't abandon you. I will definitely help you with any difficulties you may have."

You said the same thing in your past life, but it was just talk. In your past life, after Yu Hai remarried, he and Liu Lan had another son. They had a car and a house, and the two of them earned four or five hundred thousand yuan a year. The child support they gave their son was always 500 yuan, and it never increased.

500 yuan is enough to live on in the village, but when the child goes to junior high school, it's not enough just for food expenses. They can barely afford to eat their fill, and they don't eat very well.

Chen Hong was lost in her memories. She remembered that when her son was in junior high school, she couldn't stand her remarried husband's contempt and nagging anymore, so she called Yu Hai and asked him to increase the child support for their son.

Yu Hai's words to her were unforgettable: "Just enough to eat is already a lot. The child is our child. I'll cover his food expenses, but shouldn't you pay for his clothes and other necessities?"

One sentence made Chen Hong lose all hope in him.

From then on, Chen Hong never contacted Yu Hai again regarding child support, and despite the difficulties, she persevered in supporting her child until graduation from university.

Because his parents' divorce caused Yu Yang the most harm, seeing his father remarry immediately after the divorce, Yu Yang no longer objected to his maternal grandparents' family urging his mother to find someone else to start a family, and always supported his mother's remarriage.

He felt that his mother was still so young, and it was too tiring for her to raise him alone. Remarriage would make things easier. At that point in time, in that social environment, Chen Hong also felt that starting another family and finding an honest man to live with would give her son a normal home.

To avoid her son facing discrimination at school and in society, she made a wrong decision, which filled her future life with helplessness and repression.

"Chen Hong, Chen Hong, are you listening?" Yu Hai nudged the dazed Chen Hong. "I agree to the conditions you proposed. When do you think we should go and get a divorce?"

"What's the rush? It's going to rain in the next few days. Didn't we hire some people tomorrow? Let's pick the pears and sell them as soon as possible. Are you planning to stay home for a few days? I'll find some time after I'm done with these tasks to go and get a divorce with you."

"I have four days off this time, and I need to be back in Jinan by the afternoon of the day after tomorrow at the latest."

"You and Dad should discuss whether to move first or help me pick pears first. Now, let's strike while the iron is hot and write down what we just discussed in an agreement. After all, it'll be better to have it in writing to avoid any disputes later," Chen Hong said to Yu Hai. "Dad, do you think this is okay?" Chen Hong asked her father.

"You've discussed it and I have no objections. Our family doesn't have much money or any major disagreements. Okay, let's write the agreement. Chen Hong, you write it. Do you need me to ask your village chief cousin to be a witness? Or should we get a few other elders to come along?"

"No need, Dad. We can just get it notarized when we get the divorce. My cousin and his family are coming to help tomorrow, so don't tell them about this yet, so it won't be awkward for everyone. We'll tell them after the divorce is finalized."

So Chen Hong drafted the divorce agreement, clearly and meticulously writing down the agreed terms. Then she took out ink from the bedroom, and Yu Hai signed and fingerprinted it. They were just waiting to finish collecting the fruit before going through the formalities.
