Sigh, although we've achieved this goal, there's still a long road ahead, and I need to keep working hard!
The thought of becoming a landlady immediately energized Chen Hong. She worked tirelessly, harvesting honey, picking and processing tea leaves, and gathering fruit. She spent half the night working diligently.
Most of the fruit in the space has now grown and ripened. Chen Hong noticed that the fruit on the two durian trees hadn't grown any bigger for several days; perhaps they were close to ripening.
Chen Hong looks forward to the day when she can smell the fragrance of durian. Naturally ripened durian should be even sweeter and tastier!
Chen Hong didn't go to bed until 2 a.m., and then went out to sea to earn money again the next day.
Sailing the fishing boat on the vast sea, the weather was exceptionally good today. There was only a slight breeze on the sea, and when the boat was anchored, you could hardly feel the wind.
There were a lot of fishing boats out to sea today; boats of all sizes were everywhere. As you got closer, you could hear the sound of engines, making a cheerful "putt-putt-putt" sound.
Chen Hong sailed further and further out, her eyes searching the sea, and finally she spotted a large school of barracudas. She first circled the school halfway around in the fishing boat, mentally calculating the correct steering angle.
Quickly securing the rope to the hexagonal dumbbells and fixing the steering wheel, Chen Hong rushed out of the cockpit to the stern and rapidly lowered the nets. Following the pre-set trajectory and in coordination with the boat's speed, the nets were lowered one by one into the sea.
After casting the net, Chen Hong stopped the boat and scattered bait into the fishing net's ambush area. Just as she was doing this, she saw two fishing boats approaching in the distance.
Chen Hong took out a loudspeaker and turned the volume up to the maximum: "Listen up, boats ahead, there is a net-casting area 1000 meters ahead of you. Nets have already been cast 1000 meters ahead. Please turn left. Please turn left."
The two boats were almost 500 meters apart when they heard the shout and quickly turned around and sailed to Chen Hong's fishing boat.
Upon closer inspection, Chen Hong smiled; it turned out to be Uncle Lu's boat and his cousin's boat.
Three boats approached, and Uncle Lu stood on the deck and shouted, "Haha, Chen Hong, I didn't expect to meet you again at sea. Why are you alone again? Don't you want to find someone to help you?"
"Uncle Lu, why did you drive so far? How was the catch? How many fish did you get?"
"There are too many fishing boats near the shore, making it hard to find schools of fish. So we decided to go a little further out to catch more. Today was pretty good, we caught about 400 jin (200 catties). How was your catch today? It must have been quite good, right?"
Actually, that's what Lao Lu said, and his tone was a bit smug, as he felt that this time they definitely wouldn't have caught less fish than Chen Hong.
Upon hearing this, Chen Hong laughed: "Uncle Lu, you guys are sure to make a killing! It's only a few o'clock and you've already made so much. I set sail late; I've only just cast my first net and haven't caught anything yet!"
Old Lu also felt sorry for her: "You have a child with you, so it's okay to be a little late, but you have to take care of the child first. We all go out to sea at around 3 a.m., because there are more fish in the morning, and it's easier to catch them. It's a bit of a pity that you can't keep up with her skills!"
His cousin, Uncle Li, had been watching Chen Hong scatter bait from another boat: "Chen Hong, what kind of plan is this? The net has already been set, why are you still scattering bait? Isn't that a waste of money?" He watched for a long time but still couldn't understand the reason behind it.
Chen Hong said, "I figured that since my net is only two meters high, the fish at the bottom can't reach it. By scattering some bait, I can attract some of the fish from the lower layer to the surface. Also, scattering bait can help gather the fish in the net as much as possible, so I can catch more fish!"
I don't know if this will work, but a bucket of bait only costs a few dozen yuan. Catching one more good fish will make it back. It can't be just one more fish, right? Wouldn't that be a profit?
Hearing Chen Hong's explanation, the two cousins thought it made sense. But why hadn't anyone done this before? Everyone just chose a spot and cast their nets directly into the sea; why hadn't they thought of using bait to attract fish?
When fishing, you still need to scatter bait and create a feeding area! This method is theoretically sound.
The two cousins also stayed behind, intending to watch Chen Hong's net haul and see how it went. If it worked, they'd do it themselves. All three boats were anchored on the sea, watching the catch. With nothing else to do, they chatted across the boats.
"Chen Hong, how did you manage to set the net into the sea all by yourself? You'd better find someone to help you; you can't do a good job of setting a net alone." Old Lu's enthusiasm was rising.
"How about I ask your aunt to introduce you to someone? She's guaranteed to be honest and capable, and oh, she also has to be presentable."
Hearing what Lao Lu said, Chen Hong laughed heartily: "Uncle, I'm not going to look for someone else. It's so much more comfortable being alone. I can be my own boss and make all the decisions. I can work a day when I want, and rest at home and take care of the kids when I don't. We live by the sea, and with a little work, my daughter and I can make a living. Why would I want to find someone else?"
“That’s not the same. A woman still needs to find a man, so she can have someone to rely on.” Old Lu disagreed with Chen Hong’s idea.
"Thank you, Uncle. It's not like I haven't dated men before, but I haven't been able to rely on anyone. I should just live my own life. No one is reliable, and it's better to rely on myself than on anyone else. Uncle, please don't trouble your wife. I won't even consider that before the child grows up."
Chen Hong firmly refused Lao Lu's offer, genuinely worried he'd ask his husband to introduce her to potential partners. She was too busy to deal with such matters; making money was more appealing, and she was eager to become a landlady!
At this moment, Uncle Li, who had been staring at the fishing net in the sea, asked Chen Hong, "Chen Hong, how long have you been casting this net? I see you've caught quite a few fish. Shouldn't you haul it in now? Otherwise, the fish will die if you leave it in too long."
Chen Hong surveyed the sea and realized it was time to haul in the net. They had already caught a lot of fish and couldn't wait any longer. Her net was only a single layer, and with so many large fish caught, it was easy for them to break through if left unattended for too long. Besides, she couldn't catch them all at once; she needed to leave some leeway each time she cast the net.
