The next morning, Mu Huaixi got up early. She used hair oil to tidy her hair, put on new clothes, and set off pushing her newly bought Forever 28 scooter.
"Xiao Mu, are you going to the clinic? Why don't you get on your bike?"
On the way, I met Sister Yu talking to a tall woman. When she saw her pushing a cart passing by, she smiled and greeted her.
"I'm not very good at riding. I need to practice more before I dare to go out on the road," Mu Huaixi nodded to Sister Yu. She could ride an electric bike and thought a bicycle would be similar. She didn't expect that an 28-bar bike was not something that ordinary people could control. If she didn't have a lot of things to carry, she wouldn't have pushed the bike out.
"Hey sister, where did you buy this bike? Why does it look different from the one I have?" The tall woman, hands in her pockets, looked around her bike and suddenly realized, "Why is your handlebar bent? And your bell is red, really cool!"
Mu Huaixi glanced at Sister Yu, who introduced her, "This is the first battalion commander's lover, Wang Hongxia. You can just call her Sister Hongxia."
"Sister Hongxia, this car was bought in Jiangcheng. It's a new model." Mu Huaixi smiled softly, which made Wang Hongxia's eyes light up. "Hey, you are the new daughter-in-law who captured the Flower of Changbai Mountain in the Fourth Battalion, right? You are so beautiful, big sister!"
Wang Hongxia was very outgoing and she directly grabbed Mu Huaixi's hand. "Hey, Sister Yu, look at my young wife's hands. They are so tender! I also have this army green cotton jacket. When I wear it, I look like an old loofah. Look at little Mu, she is as tender as a cucumber!"
"Alright, alright, Xiao Mu is still at work," Sister Yu saw that Mu Huaixi was uncomfortable and called Wang Hongxia, "Come on, don't you want to tell me something?"
Wang Hongxia just let go and grabbed Mu Huaixi again, "Hey, Xiao Mu, do you want to build a kang at home? I feel like the nights in the mountains are even colder than in Northeast China."
"Build a kang?" Mu Huaixi thought about it and it seemed really good, but she couldn't delay her first day at work, so she nodded to Sister Hongxia, "How about we wait until I get off work? My first day..."
"Yes, yes, you should go quickly," Wang Hongxia loosened her hand and smoothed out her wrinkled sleeves. "I'll wait for you at Sister Yu's house tonight!"
The health center is on the right side of Hulu Pass, on the flat ground at the foot of Jinjiao Mountain. Mu Huaixi pushed the cart around a forest and saw the courtyard wall with large red painted characters.
"Huluai Health Center," Mu Huaixi stopped and looked at the neatly written characters, a little lost in thought. Then she smiled slightly and pushed the cart into the gate. Someone happened to be sweeping the floor not far away, and came up to greet her when she saw her.
"Hello, Doctor Jiang hasn't arrived yet. You'll have to wait a little longer if you want to see the doctor."
The visitor showed two small canine teeth when he smiled. He looked younger than her. Mu Huaixi thought about what Sister Yu had said to her, "You are Li Fengjuan, right? I am the new doctor. My name is Mu Huaixi."
Li Fengjuan's eyes widened, and she looked her up and down twice before she came to her senses. "I'm Li Fengjuan. Doctor Mu, how did you know me? I thought it was... No, I didn't expect you to be so young! You look about the same age as me?"
"I'm an Ox, what about you?" Mu Huaixi locked the car under a big tree on the east side of the yard, untied the medicine box tied to the back seat, and greeted her.
"I'm born in the Year of the Rat, so I'm older than you!" Li Fengjuan looked at the box in her arms curiously and leaned the broom against the tree. "Your wooden box is really beautiful. Oh, by the way, the house is already cleaned up. Come with me."
Mu Huaixi followed her and listened to her introduction. "Including you, there are only five people in the health center. Sister Guo Aidang is the accountant, in charge of registration and collection. Wang Xiaohua and I are nurses, and there's also Doctor Jiang. We originally planned to clear out the second clinic room for you, but Doctor Jiang said it's too cold in the winter, so to save coal, we can just use one room. What do you think?"
The health center faces south and backs onto Jinjiao Mountain. The room next to the big iron gate is used as a cashier's office, the west room is used as a warehouse, and the two east rooms are planned to be used as beds, but they have not been cleaned up yet. Of the three bungalows opposite the door, the one on the west side has a sign for the nurse's room hanging on it, and the door to the east side is locked. Only the room in the middle has a felt curtain, and there is a little water vapor condensing on the glass.
"We usually stay in this room. It has two doors. Doctor Jiang wants the east door to be for Traditional Chinese Medicine and the west door for Western Medicine. This way it looks more professional," Li Fengjuan said, unable to help but laugh. She lifted the felt blanket and walked in through the east door, pointing to a large wooden table. "Doctor Mu, this is your seat."
Mu Huaixi nodded in thanks, set her medicine box on the table, and surveyed the surroundings. The large room had two large windows facing the mountain. She and Dr. Jiang each occupied a wooden table, and metal cabinets were placed against the wall behind each table. A bed sat between the two tables, facing the coal stove against the south wall. Next to the stove were two small tables, and judging by the items on them, they were likely used by Li Fengjuan and the others.
Seeing her staring at the middle bed, Li Fengjuan walked over and pulled up the white curtain on the wall, pulling it hard to the center. "Doctor Jiang said that by pulling the curtain like this, the two sides can be separated, and the patient won't feel cold when taking off clothes for the examination."
"Doctor Jiang arranged it really well." Mu Huaixi looked up at the curtains on both sides of the bed and realized that they were made of old white sheets. However, the stitching was dense and straight, so it was not easy to see. "What a good craftsmanship."
Li Fengjuan felt a little embarrassed. She chuckled and slapped her forehead, then ran to the small table and got a bunch of keys. "Doctor Mu, these are the keys to the main house, the warehouse, and the front door. Take them. We have a number of keys, so don't lose them."
Mu Huaixi nodded, put the key in his trouser pocket, thought for a while, took it out and put it in the inner belt of his cotton jacket.
"Doctor Mu, you can tie it around your belt like me." Li Fengjuan flipped up her cotton jacket to show her, but unexpectedly someone lifted the felt curtain of another door. She immediately blushed, pulled up her clothes, lowered her head and ran out, "I, I'll go sweep the floor!"
Mu Huaixi met Dr. Jiang's puzzled expression and couldn't help but curl her lips. "Hello, Dr. Jiang, my name is Mu Huaixi."
"Hello, I'm Jiang Wenyuan." Jiang Wenyuan looked her over, took off his coat and put on a white coat, and suddenly said, "I heard that Doctor Mu had an argument with someone in the cafeteria?"
"......" Mu Huaixi didn't expect the news to spread so quickly, and he didn't know how to respond for a while.
Unexpectedly, Doctor Jiang didn't expect her to reply, but instead said calmly, "You're right to scold Cao Aijun. We study medicine to cure diseases and save lives, not to entertain them. If someone disrespects you, you don't have to take him seriously."
Mu Huaixi was stunned, and then she heard Jiang Wenyuan continue, "Deng Gong once said that no matter whether a cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice, it is a good cat. This also applies to the health center. Whether it is traditional Chinese medicine or Western medicine, as long as it can relieve people's suffering, it's fine. We just opened here, so there are not many patients. You can take your time."
"Who said Dr. Jiang has a bad temper?!" Mu Huaixi was touched. After pondering Dr. Jiang's words, he replied cautiously, "I will carefully consider the medication."
