Chapter 49: Flag Raising

Mu Huaixi was really angry. She used all her strength to rub the medicated oil, making both of them sweat. She looked at Ying Mingcheng's sweaty chest muscles, then looked at herself leaning on him, and suddenly Luo Rui's words this morning floated through her mind.

"What are you two playing?"

The atmosphere suddenly became strange. Mu Huaixi blushed and withdrew her hand. She pretended to be calm as she collected the scattered items on the bed and hurried out. "I'm going to wash my hands. You take a rest."

"It's all Luo Rui's fault!" Mu Huaixi slapped his face with cold water, and realized belatedly that the two of them had shared a room and were on the same bed, although it was just to make it easier to apply the medicated oil.

Originally, Dr. Mu had no evil thoughts at all, but the moment Luo Rui's words appeared in his mind, everything became subtle!

The more Mu Huaixi washed her hands, the redder her face became. Only today did she realize that a man's abdominal muscles could be so hard, and his chest muscles were soft yet elastic. That bouncy feeling remained on her hands and could not be washed off no matter how hard she washed.

Fortunately, when she returned, Ying Mingcheng was already dressed and holding his military cap, ready to say goodbye to her. "I still have work to do in the afternoon, you should have a good rest."

Mu Huaixi nodded, watched him leave the door, then turned back and looked at herself deeply for a few times, "By the way, there will be a flag-raising ceremony tomorrow morning, do you want to go?"

"Flag raising?" Mu Huaixi thought of the national flag flying in front of the regiment office and was a little curious about what day tomorrow was.

"It's not at the regimental headquarters," Ying Mingcheng said, buttoning his military cap. He motioned for her to follow him outside, walked to the window overlooking the stadium, and pointed to the bare flagpole. "The flag was taken down when it snowed. The veterans are retiring soon, so we hope to raise it again."

Mu Huaixi looked at the soldiers who were busy rehearsing on the court and nodded. "Come and call me tomorrow morning. Don't miss it."

The next day, while it was still dark, Mu Huaixi followed Ying Mingcheng to the place.

A lot of people had gathered near the stadium. She saw Sister Yu, Sister Hongxia holding a child, and the children beside her rubbing their sleepy eyes. Most of the people in the family compound should have arrived.

On the other side of the flagpole, soldiers were lined up in the stadium. They were as silent as rocks in the dark night. If Ying Mingcheng hadn't pointed them out to her, she really wouldn't have noticed them.

"Don't you have to go?" Mu Huaixi looked around and found that there were basically women and children around, and there were very few men like him.

Ying Mingcheng shook his head. He was on leave after returning from a mission, and the matter between him and Cao Aijun had not been concluded yet, so he didn't need to return to the team yet.

Mu Huaixi was skeptical, but was happy to hide beside him. It was really nice to have a tall man to block the wind.

The closer it got to dawn, the darker the sky became and the stronger the wind became. Mu Huaixi wished she could curl up in her cotton-padded jacket. She rubbed her hands and was about to follow the person next to her and put them into her sleeves when she felt a big hand coming over and pinching her hands, rubbing them randomly twice, and then putting them both into his military coat pocket.

“!”

Mu Huaixi widened her eyes and looked around furtively. Only a few people in the crowd were holding kerosene lamps, and the remaining flashlights were used to illuminate the way outside the stadium. She couldn't even see the faces of the people next to her clearly, and others certainly couldn't see her.

She breathed a sigh of relief and even quietly moved closer to Ying Mingcheng to find a comfortable position.

The pockets of the military coat are so warm.

Ying Mingcheng turned his head and smiled silently for a while. He slowly closed his hands in his pockets and held the small, soft prey in his palms.

When the first ray of light appeared on the horizon, all the flashlights gathered on the left side of the flagpole, and a team of veterans holding the national flag appeared in front of everyone.

They are not professional flag squads, but they are battle-hardened soldiers, warriors tempered by flesh and blood, and patriots who are eager to dedicate all their blood to the country.

They advanced silently, but each step was in unison and powerful. Their loyalty was as resounding as their footsteps, shaking people's hearts and lungs.

Mu Huaixi widened her eyes slightly. She felt her heartbeat gradually synchronized with the old soldier's march. The cold wind seemed to be afraid of such powerful soldiers and gradually died down.

She had no time to look at other people, but she believed that everyone felt deeply shocked like her. At that moment, she remembered a lot, and the most profound sentence was: There is always someone who carries the burden for you in the middle of the night.

The veterans arrived near the flagpole, but did not start raising the flag as they had rehearsed. Instead, they lined up neatly and saluted toward the other side of the flagpole.

Mu Huaixi stood on tiptoe, eager to know what was happening over there, but felt his hand in the pocket of his military coat being tightly grasped, and then he was led forward a step.

Mu Huaixi looked up in surprise. It was the first time she saw so many emotions on Ying Mingcheng's face. Before she could figure out what was going on, she saw him solemnly and majestically saluting to the right of the flagpole.

With the last ray of flashlight, Mu Huaixi saw that the soldiers standing solemnly opposite him all saluted, and the direction of all the salutes was a soldier sitting in a wheelchair, holding the portraits of the two people in his arms.

Mu Huaixi felt a sudden lump in her throat, as if she understood the significance of today's flag-raising ceremony.

The atmosphere gradually became solemn, even the youngest child fell silent. Everyone stood in the approaching dawn, listening to the heartbeats surging in the wind, waiting.

Waiting.

"Beep beep beep beep~~~"

The loud military bugle call pierced the sky, and at the same time a touch of red tore through the darkness, waking up everyone's ears.

The national flag was raised in the hands of the veterans, accompanied by the deep and rich chorus:

"Arise, you who refuse to be slaves..."

The singing became louder and louder along with the flags, and Mu Huaixi joined in unconsciously. Not only her, but the voices of everyone gradually gathered in the singing, including old people who sang along even though they were crying, gentle but determined women, young boys and girls with voices as clear as silver bells, cute and tender children who were just learning to speak, and even babies who couldn't distinguish the words but joined in the fun loudly.

Everyone's voices gathered together, everyone's eyes gathered together, following the five-star red flag that was redder than the red sun, and reached the top together.

The sun is rising.

The flag-raising ceremony has ended, but everyone is still standing there. It seems that everyone, like Mu Huaixi, is baptized by the wind, the sunlight, and the singing, and is shocked by the red flag that breaks through the darkness.

Mu Huaixi frowned slightly and took out her right hand to cover her chest. She felt something stirring inside her, but she couldn't tell what it was.

"team leader!"

Ying Mingcheng beside her could no longer hold back and ran towards the man under the flagpole, but he forgot that he had a prey in his coat pocket. Mu Huaixi was inexplicably dragged away before he could pull back his left hand.

For every step Ying Mingcheng took, she had to jog two or three steps.

That's not all. She received countless surprised and teasing looks along the way. The damn Luo Rui even raised her hands to her and touched her two thumbs up.

In the midst of war and chaos, Mu Huaixi actually understood what she was talking about and wished he could find a hole in the ground to crawl into!

“You’re really good at playing.”
