Chapter 3 Thief

“No certificate!”

Mu Huaixi was almost pissed off by Zhang Shaozi's shamelessness. A few days ago, her aunt did ask her for her ID card. She probably wanted to get the certificate first so that she could put the two thousand yuan in her pocket. But Zhang Hongwei's mother was not so easy to fool. A woman who could not give birth to a grandson was not qualified to be registered in his family's household registration book.

"Okay," Ying Mingcheng looked at her deeply, turned around and pushed her back to the wing room, "Don't come out from here, and don't let anyone in."

Mu Huaixi nodded, and when the wooden door was about to close, she suddenly mustered up the courage to shout, "You, don't get hurt!"

Amidst the clamor, she heard Ying Mingcheng's soft laugh, and blushed as she swallowed the words, "I'll wait for you." It was strange, but when she learned he was "Brother Orange," she inexplicably felt he was trustworthy, perhaps because he was the only one who cared for her during that chaotic funeral.

Mu Huaixi listened to the ghosts and wolves howling outside, and her heart gradually calmed down, but the rear window was pried open, and Mu Zhao flipped over and came in, pulling her wrist back.

"What are you doing?" Mu Huaixi pushed her away and stepped back, leaning against the door panel and looking at her warily.

"Mu Huaixi!" Mu Zhao turned around in surprise and grabbed her arm again, "Hurry up! If Zhang Hongwei comes in later, you'll be in trouble!"

"Mu Zhao, are you going to hand me over to Zhang Hongwei?" Mu Huaixi suddenly spoke, catching the other party off guard.

"What did you say..." Mu Zhao saw that she was completely on guard and had obviously seen through him, so he stopped pretending and gave a fake smile. "You and Zhang Hongwei are getting married, so what's wrong with me handing you over to him?"

"The soldier who came to visit the Mu family this spring was looking for me, not my uncle, right?"

"You don't have an uncle working in Shengjing at all. All the things I sent for my birthday fell into your hands, right?"

"You hid those letters too, didn't you?!"

Mu Zhao was defeated by her questioning and angrily pushed her to the ground, "Mu Huaixi! How shameless of you! You are about to marry Zhang Hongwei, and you are still thinking about other men!"

Mu Huaixi felt that the person before her was strangely unfamiliar. She recalled Mu Zhao's words that their birthdays were close, and that they were destined to be best sisters. She also recalled Mu Zhao's gratitude for her mother's words of help, changing her name from Mu Zhao to Mu Zhao. She also recalled the fancy clothes and jewelry Mu Zhao showed off every year around her birthday. What else could she not understand?

Perhaps hurt by her gaze, Mu Zhao's face flushed red with embarrassment. He suddenly rushed over and tried to tear her apart, cursing obscenely, "Who wants your things, you vixen, you evildoer! Your parents are dead, and you live and eat in my house, so these things are ours!"

Mu Huaixi felt like she was blind in her previous life. She suddenly exerted her strength and pushed Mu Zhao down, slapping her hard in the face. "Thief!"

"You...you dare to hit me?!" Mu Zhao covered his face in surprise. He obviously couldn't accept that his usually obedient cousin had become so fierce.

Mu Huaixi was still furious, so she slapped her twice again and yelled with tears in her eyes, "Thief! You thief!"

She wasn't angry about the packages Mu Zhao stole, nor about the letters intercepted by her uncle's family, but about the life she could have led that could have been completely different! She trusted the wrong person, mistook a jackal for a relative, and ended up with a lifetime of regret.

"You thief...bitch..." Mu Huaixi burst into tears, and the fists on Mu Zhao gradually became weaker.

Mu Zhao was not the type to take a beating. With a fierce look in her eyes, she raised her hand and hit Mu Huaixi in the face, wishing she could scratch that pretty face right away!

"What are you doing?!"

Mu Zhao's raised hand was grabbed by someone. She was so angry that she bumped into the person, but found that it was actually a police officer wearing a big hat!

"Public security comrade, she hit me!"

Mu Zhao's complaint was ineffective. Mu Huaixi was helped up by Ying Mingcheng who had just come in, but she was pushed into the corner. Before Mu Zhao could understand the situation, he shouted with red eyes, "Public Security Comrade, she hit me, why didn't you arrest her?!"

The police officer in the big hat glanced at Ying Mingcheng, who was supporting the little girl and asking about her well-being, and replied seriously, "Then I didn't see it. I saw you trying to scratch her face when I came in!"

"Are you okay?" Ying Mingcheng saw the little girl crying so hard that she was in a trance, and sighed in his heart. It seemed that she had suffered a lot of grievances in the past three years.

He turned around and drove everyone out, then he retreated. As he closed the door, he stared at the grown-up girl for a long time and said, just like he did three years ago, "Cry, I'm outside."

Ying Mingcheng was standing guard at the door, listening to the occasional sobs coming from the room, and couldn't help lighting a cigarette. The little girl from the Mu family hadn't changed. When she was wronged, she would hide and cry silently like a wounded animal.

He had seen his little sister wailing when she was wronged, seen his comrades shed tears when they retired due to injuries, and even seen criminals shed tears before they died. But only Mu Huaixi's tears made him feel upset, and made him want to be her support - if she had no one to rely on, how could she not even dare to cry?

"Boss, why are you so gloomy?" The police officer in the peaked cap came over and asked for a cigarette. "How are you guys?"

"Everything is fine. How about you?" Ying Mingcheng took him a few steps to the side and patted his shoulder. "Wei Chengbao, thank you very much for this time--"

"What are you thanking me for?" Wei Chengbao blew out a smoke ring, his eyes swept across the quiet room, and he lowered his voice. "If a thug had snatched your wife, I'd probably be scolded to death by my brothers. Besides, if it weren't for you, I wouldn't have been able to successfully change my career."

"We're all brothers," Ying Mingcheng didn't like to hear this. After hearing that there was no movement in the wing room, he patted his old subordinate's shoulder again and said, "Clean up the place first. I'll introduce my fiancée to you when we get back to the county."

Ying Mingcheng took a few steps, turned back and ordered, "Don't scare them, but make sure they learn a lesson!"

Wei Chengbao squinted at the boss's hurried back, his heart filled with disbelief. He had been under his command since he joined the army, following him through thick and thin. He naturally understood how aloof this soldier, twice awarded first-class merit in three years, was from women. A nurse at the military hospital, a commander's daughter, and dancers from the art troupe had all shown interest in him, but he had rejected them all with his unromantic attitude. Who could have predicted that he would now be so devoted to a little village girl?

He glanced at the back room again, crushed out his cigarette butt and walked out. If he had known that the Mu family girl was so important, he would not have been so perfunctory when he came here in the spring. Now he could only do the current task better. He heard that the boss had made another contribution and was promoted.

Mu Huaixi pushed open the door to her wing room and was met by Ying Mingcheng, who had brought a hot towel and a comb. Seeing his red hands, she could only nod coldly. She had already made up her mind back then: she wasn't going to spend her life revolving around a man's kitchen. She was going to pick up the acupuncture and pulse diagnosis techniques she had learned from her grandfather and pass on his life's work!

Ying Mingcheng was completely unaware of her ambitious wish. He waited for her to slowly pack herself up before saying what he had wanted to say three years ago, "Come with me."
