Chapter 158: Gambling on truth and falsehood: Decisions in the fog of intelligence

The alarm lights cut Ren Shirong's face into red and white pieces.

He staggered and slapped the chip on the console. His soaked combat uniform left dark red stains on the ground. "Contact Station No. 4 is completely destroyed. This was dug out from the stomach of a corpse."

Mou Xuan wiped the blood from the corner of his lips, and the metal buckle on the tactical gloves scraped Chen Yao's nails, which she didn't have time to retract.

The seventeen red dots on the holographic map suddenly stopped moving. Heavy rain washed over the abandoned chemical plant at the wrong coordinates, as if mocking the self-righteous trap of mankind.

"Treat the wound first." Chen Yao grabbed the medical bag and tried to pull Ren Shirong's collar, but the other party shook his arm away.

The hunched-backed contact stared at Mou Xuan like an angry hedgehog, his bloodshot eyes staring at him: "They said this is the last source of intelligence."

The console hummed, and analysts wearing rubber gloves began to analyze the chip.

The light blue data stream was reflected on his lenses: "The electronic signature is complete, the encryption method meets the standards of the Northern District Resistance Army, and the signal source is located at..." His voice was suddenly stuck because Mou Xuan crushed the coffee cup.

The dark brown liquid spread along the alloy table to the edge of the chip, and Mou Xuan used his bloody fingertips to cut open the holographic projection.

In the surveillance footage of a scrapyard 20 kilometers away, the container was emitting a strange fluorescent light in the heavy rain.

He remembered that when he checked the intelligence route with Envoy Qi three days ago, there should be no signs of rust in the ventilation duct where the sniper was hiding.

"Give me three minutes." Mou Xuan tore open his collar to reveal the bloodstain on his collarbone, and the lines of the time power glowed silver under his skin.

Chen Yao immediately pressed the alarm mute button, and her wet temples brushed against the artery in his wrist - this was the tacit understanding they had cultivated over the past half month.

When the world fell into gray, Mou Xuan grabbed Ren Shirong's pistol and rushed out of the safe house.

The raindrops in the cracks of time were suspended in the air, and he stepped on the solidified water droplets and jumped onto the roof of the armored vehicle.

In the last second before his supernatural power was exhausted, he saw two fresh tire tracks outside the east wall of the scrapyard, and the crushed dandelion fluff was maintaining its exploding shape as time stood still.

"The container is loaded with trap-type spore bullets." The moment Mou Xuan returned to reality, he held Chen Yao's shoulders and gasped. The temperature conduction plate on the tactical belt was still hot. "The distance between the tracks is five centimeters wider than our off-road vehicles. It's a military-modified truck."

The analyst's hand, which was pushing up his glasses, froze in mid-air, and the data model in front of him suddenly collapsed into garbled code.

Inspector Cai appeared at the door without anyone noticing. The wax seal on the file in his arms was gleaming faintly. "Three batches of spore bullets disappeared from the West District Laboratory last month."

The moment Chen Yao pulled out the bayonet and opened the chip shell, revealing the micro transmitter inside, Ren Shirong suddenly collapsed in a pool of blood.

This contact person, who was always as alert as a mouse, stared at the scratch on the back of his hand and muttered to himself: "When they were bandaging me... the nurse's ring hit my bone..."

"Take him to the disinfection room." Mou Xuan bandaged his palm that was cut by the coffee cup and signaled Inspector Cai to follow.

When the metal door closed heavily, he turned around and saw Chen Yao assembling an electromagnetic pulse gun. The movement of her slender fingers stroking the heat sink of the gun barrel was like touching the trembling back of her lover.

"The detonator of the spore bullet needs to be kept at minus twenty degrees." She pushed the frozen bomb into the bomb bay. When she raised her eyes, the blue light of the control console flickered in her eyes. "The third emergency hatch of the cold storage in the East District - I just cracked the password of the temperature control system there ten minutes ago."

Mou Xuan's Adam's apple moved, and the bloodstain on his collarbone suddenly began to itch.

He recalled the night of his rebirth three months ago, when Chen Yao looked at him with the same eyes as he used his time power to kill the pursuers.

The safe house's ventilation system beeped, stirring the smell of blood and the violet scent of her hair into a vortex.

"Messenger Qi has requested to rejoin the team." When the prompt popped up on the electronic screen, an orange flare suddenly rose from the scrapyard in the heavy rain.

Mou Xuan looked at the red dot that had moved again on the holographic map, with a sharp curve at the corner of his mouth.

The muzzle of Chen Yao's gun grazed his ear, shattering the flashing alarm lights into flying glass snow.

When Inspector Cai returned with Ren Shirong's DNA report, Messenger Qi was squatting in the corridor debugging his mechanical carrier pigeon.

This young man, who always says "speed is life", is now using a file to carefully polish the sensor on the bird's beak. The sound of metal collision is mixed with ambiguous humming.

The control room suddenly fell into darkness. In the three seconds before the backup power was activated, Mou Xuan felt Chen Yao's breath sweeping across the corners of his scabbed lips.

When the red light enveloped the safe house again, Messenger Qi's mechanical carrier pigeon was tilting its head and staring at the orange signal on the holographic map, its electronic eyes flashing a strange purple.

(Continued from the main text)

Messenger Qi suddenly pressed the mechanical pigeon onto the console. The metal claws of the bird rubbed against the alloy tabletop, making a harsh sound. "Give me twelve hours, and I can turn the false information into a barb that will bite their throats."

Mou Xuan tapped his knuckles on the edge of the holographic projection, and the three-dimensional structure diagram of the West District Laboratory was being decomposed and reassembled.

He noticed that Chen Yao's left hand was unconsciously stroking the heat sink of the electromagnetic pulse gun - this was her habitual action when calculating risks.

"We need three sets of bait." Inspector Cai suddenly spoke, revealing a corner of the DNA report in the file bag. "Nano-positioning chip residues were extracted from the back of Ren Shirong's hand." This middle-aged man, who was always meticulous, added with a tone as precise as a scalpel: "The other party knew the intelligence route two days earlier than us."

Chen Yao suddenly slapped the freezing bomb on the tactical map. The low temperature caused the red light representing the enemy's stronghold to condense into frost: "The temperature control system of the East District cold storage will generate a random key every six hours. I can create a 0.3 second loophole during the fourth check."
