Blood was oozing from Mou Xuan's knuckles, and the spiral steel pipe made a clicking sound similar to that of a clock spring.
He thrust the steel nail into his elbow joint with his backhand. The severe pain caused the vortex of time to freeze into thirty-six overlapping images - the mutant creatures were using metal scales to spell out the sample code that Engineer Jiang had lost.
"Their symbiotic bacteria are reading the traces of time!" Engineer Jiang suddenly smashed the petri dish, and the same spiral patterns as the steel pipe floated in the mucus. "This is the larval specimen I dissected three days ago. The number is T-09-336."
Qin Gong suddenly ripped open the microwave oven shell and aimed the spider venom injection tube at the phase resonator: "So these beasts can sense the timeline of our weapons development?" His bloodshot eyes stared at the slime parameters jumping on the screen, "Lao Mou, I need your blood sample in three hours!"
The laboratory suddenly tilted forty-five degrees, and Master Duan's roar came from the ventilation duct: "They are tying a bow around the defense wall!" The burning protective helmet smashed the observation window, and a huge net woven with steel bars by the mutant creatures was carrying bullet casings and concrete blocks into the air.
Mou Xuan tore off the cable wrapped around his wrist, and the metal wire automatically weaved into an hourglass shape in mid-air.
When the seventh time pause was activated, he saw that the glove fibers of Engineer Jiang from three days ago were being reorganized in the mutant biological mucus - those symbiotic bacteria were devouring the time afterimages of the laboratory.
"Reverse resonance requires synchronization of vital signs." Chen Yao suddenly kicked open the liquid nitrogen tank, and the overlapping iris patterns of her and Jiang Gong emerged in the cold air. "Use my cell membrane as a conductor. Lao Qin, you have seven minutes!"
The mutant creatures' electromagnetic cannon march suddenly changed its tune to a funeral march.
Mou Xuan watched his own dripping blood forming a miniature time corridor on the surface of the steel pipe. He suddenly grabbed the autopsy records from three days ago and stuffed them into the microwave. The symbiotic bacteria immediately started tap dancing in the culture dish.
"It's the resonant frequency!" Engineer Jiang tore open his white coat to reveal his chest covered with scratches, and placed the sensor on his heart. "These mucus will reorganize the cell membrane structure every 23 minutes, but..." He suddenly coughed violently, and silver-blue hyphae were swimming in the blood foam he spat out.
Qin Gong picked up a wrench and smashed the operating table, then poured a mixture of spider venom and liquid nitrogen into the modified particle accelerator: "So their real fatal injury is..." Amid the sound of metal collision, his oily fingers drew a double helix symbol on the control screen, "Phase resonance interruption!"
There was a scream of metal tearing outside the defensive wall, and the mutant creatures suddenly began to build church spires with steel scales.
Mou Xuan pulled off Chen Yao's hairpin and stabbed it into his temple. In the time corridor, he saw the laboratory seventy-two hours later - all the mutant creatures were imitating Engineer Jiang's action of adjusting his glasses.
"Now!" Mou Xuan inserted the blood-stained steel pipe into the particle accelerator. The moment Engineer Qin pulled the switch, the lights in the entire base were twisted into the shape of a DNA chain.
Jiang Gong suddenly rushed to the observation window and found that the mutant was using bullet shells to spell out the date on his mother's tombstone.
Amid the buzzing sound of the new weapon being activated, Chen Yao suddenly grabbed Mou Xuan's bleeding wrist: "Their symbiotic bacteria... are copying our sad memories!" Before she finished her words, all the culture dishes exploded at the same time, and fragments of everyone's most painful time emerged in the mucus.
The moment the reverse resonance wave penetrated the defense wall, the mutated creatures suddenly raised their metal claws in unison - like three hundred puppets bowing to the audience at the same time.
Engineer Qin laughed wildly and pressed the launch button. A blue beam of light wrapped around a vortex of time shot out from the modified microwave oven, and all the clocks in the base began to sing the birthday song backwards.
At the last second, Mou Xuan tore off the third button of Jiang Gong's shirt and threw it into the light beam. That was the last star coordinate he saw before his rebirth.
The metal church built by the mutant creatures suddenly began to dance a waltz, and the steel scales shattered into phosphorescent flames in the blue light, just like the candlelight on the last Christmas Eve before the end of the world.
(In the aftermath of the new weapon being activated, a metal scale with "T-09-336" engraved on it suddenly began to replicate itself, and the surface showed the unique ring-shaped tooth marks of the mutant leader...) (Continuation)
Gun smoke carrying the smell of burnt metal rolled outside the defense wall. Engineer Qin hit the microwave oven casing with an oil-soaked wrench, shaking off three bluish metal scales.
"Twelve attack points are deactivated at the same time!" His hoarse roar echoed in the dome of the laboratory, and the red dots on the monitoring screen representing the mutant creatures were extinguished in the form of fireworks.
Chen Yao's fingers, which were tearing open the chocolate wrapper, suddenly stopped.
The phosphorescent light coming in from the window cast a ring-shaped tooth mark on the glass, like some kind of sneering mouth shape.
"They retreated too neatly." She smeared the melted chocolate on Mou Xuan's bleeding knuckles. The cold touch made the thirty-six images remaining in the vortex of time tremble slightly.
Silver-blue mucus was still dripping from the hem of Jiang Gong's white coat. He bent down to pick up a scale with "T-09-336" engraved on it. The scalpel suddenly scraped a spark at the end of the number: "The angle of these ring-shaped tooth marks has changed." The fragments of the petri dish formed an incomplete hexagon in his palm. "When retreating, all attacking units maintained an equilateral triangle array, just like..."
"It's like the assembly line of a precision machine tool." Mou Xuan tore off the cables wrapped around the particle accelerator, and the metal wires automatically weaved into the shape of a command knife the moment they hit the ground.
The hairpin on his temple suddenly oozed black blood, and fragments of memory from three days ago flashed in his retina - when the mutant creatures were building the metal cathedral, seven scales were always suspended on the top of the command tower.
There was a crisp sound like a metal wind chime outside the defense wall. Master Duan rushed into the laboratory carrying a smoking welding gun. "The damn guy is using bullet shells to make paper cranes!" The scratches on his protective mask were emitting blue light, and half a scale was being reassembled in the welding seam. "The brothers in the third district said they saw a three-story-high black shadow somersaulting in the clouds."
