The chill spread from Mou Xuan's body, instantly freezing the anxious air in the room.
His deep eyes swept across the empty bed and finally fixed on the window - that was the only possible breakthrough, although from the outside there were no signs of climbing or destruction.
"Block the base and put all exits under martial law! Sound the level two alarm!" Mou Xuan's voice was not loud, but it carried an unquestionable majesty that penetrated everyone's eardrums.
"Yes!" The signalman immediately took the order, and the shrill alarm quickly broke the tranquility of the alliance base.
Panic spread like a plague.
The disappearance of the traitor was like a heavy hammer hitting the hearts of the alliance members who had just ignited hope.
If he truly repented, why would he run away?
If he had evil intentions, wouldn't all the information he provided be a deadly trap?
Has that mysterious hostile force already known everything about the alliance?
"Boss, what should we do now?" Chen Yao walked quickly to Mou Xuan, her pretty face full of anxiety and self-blame.
As the person in charge of surveillance, she cannot escape blame.
Mou Xuan took a deep breath and suppressed the anger and suspicion in his heart.
The more critical the moment, the more he needs to stay calm.
"Call all core members, conference room, now!"
A moment later, in the alliance's core meeting room. The atmosphere was so heavy that water seemed to drip out of it.
"I knew it! I knew this kid was still determined to do evil!" Zhou Zhenbang, the leader of the conservative faction of the Zhou Alliance, slammed the table, his gray beard trembling with anger, "What bullshit redemption! He is clearly a spy sent by the enemy. Now that the mission is completed, he will naturally slip away! We have all been fooled by him!"
Several conservative members behind him echoed his words in strong terms, arguing that all combat plans based on the traitor's intelligence must be abandoned immediately, and that a thorough purge must be carried out within the alliance to root out possible "accomplices."
"Mr. Zhou, you can't say that." Lu Jingwen, a representative of the tolerant faction of the Lu Alliance and a middle-aged woman with slightly curly hair, frowned and refuted softly, "After our preliminary verification of the information provided by the traitor, many details are consistent. If he is really a spy, why did he provide so much real information? Moreover, he disappeared so strangely, could it be...could it be that he was coerced by external forces, or was he... silenced?"
"Silencing? Coercion?" Zhou Zhenbang sneered, "Secretary Lu, you are too naive! Who can get rid of him quietly under our noses? Unless he has special means, or... we have a traitor inside!"
As soon as these words came out, the atmosphere in the conference room became even more tense, and everyone looked at each other in bewilderment.
"Enough!" Mou Xuan's voice was like the impact of ice, instantly suppressing all noise.
His sharp eyes swept across the room, "Now is not the time to blame each other. Arguing won't solve anything."
He paused and continued, "There are indeed many doubts about the disappearance of the traitor. If he fled on his own initiative, why did he choose to do so at this critical juncture when we were about to take action? What benefit would this bring him? If he was abducted, how did the enemy do it? All of these need to be investigated clearly."
Mou Xuan's eyes fell on the map, and he pointed to a mark: "This is the place that the traitor Yu mentioned before, the place where he last came into contact with the mysterious force - the abandoned factory in the west of the city. Maybe we can find some clues there."
He stood up and said firmly, "I will personally lead the team to investigate. Mr. Zhou, Officer Lu, the stability and defense of the base will be in your hands. No matter what happens, the morale of the troops must not be disturbed."
"Boss, I'll go with you!" Chen Yao immediately stood up with a firm look in her eyes, "I have experience in tracking and investigation, and... I must be responsible for this matter to the end!"
Mou Xuan glanced at her and nodded slightly: "Okay. Select ten elite soldiers, equip them with simple equipment, and set off in half an hour."
Half an hour later, a modified off-road vehicle and two assault motorcycles drove out of the alliance base silently and sped towards the abandoned factory in the west of the city.
The abandoned factory was filled with a mixed smell of rust and dust, and the dilapidated factory buildings made whimpering sounds in the cold wind of the end of the world.
Mou Xuan, along with Chen Yao and others, carefully searched every corner.
"There are signs of a fight here!" A team member discovered something unusual in a dusty corner.
There were a few unclear drag marks on the ground, and a few buttons scattered on the ground, which were not the style of the Alliance uniform.
Chen Yao found several crumpled pieces of paper under a smashed console.
"Boss, look at this!"
Mou Xuan took the piece of paper and unfolded it carefully.
There were some scribbled symbols and simple diagrams on the paper, which seemed to be the design draft of some kind of instrument, with several circled dates and vague place names next to them.
One of the symbols is somewhat similar to the mark describing an enemy communication device in the intelligence provided by the traitor before.
"This is not the handwriting of the traitor Yu." Mou Xuan frowned and turned the paper over and over again. "It seems more like someone wanted to leave a message in a hurry, but was interrupted."
He closed his eyes and quickly analyzed the clues in front of him: the strange disappearance, the buttons that were not standard for the Alliance, the signs of fighting, and the meaningless drawings and symbols.
A bold guess formed in his mind: "The traitor Yu might not have escaped on his own initiative. He might have discovered some deeper and more urgent secrets and wanted to pass them on to us, but he was exposed in the process and hijacked by the enemy. These things may be the last clues he hastily left behind before he was taken away."
