As if afraid that others wouldn't know he already had a wife, he couldn't help but show her off whenever he had the chance.
It's like everyone has a wife!
Although his wife wasn't as wealthy as the general's, he had enjoyed her love and care for many years. Meanwhile, some men, though married, had never even experienced their wedding night, never felt their wife's warmth, yet they still boasted about it!
Before Zheng Dinglian could even boast a few words, a soldier hurried over, clutching two heavy letters in his hands.
"Your Highness, your letter has arrived."
Zheng Dinglian raised an eyebrow slightly: "A letter from home? Is it mine?"
The soldier replied respectfully, "Indeed."
Zheng Dinglian's gaze softened immediately, a barely perceptible smile playing on his lips, yet he feigned impatience as he asked Mo Lin, "Are all women so dependent on their husbands? I've only been gone a few days and you've already sent me two letters? Is your wife also so affectionate?"
Mo Lin chuckled to himself, secretly regretting his actions. If he had known this would happen, he shouldn't have gone through all that trouble in the first place!
Zheng Dinglian reached out and took the letter. His gaze fell on the handwriting on the envelope, and the smile vanished without a trace.
This handwriting... is the work of his immature younger sister, Zheng Huiyi. It seems his expectations have been dashed.
Mo Lin noticed the change in his expression and couldn't help but glance at the envelope with curiosity. He asked with great interest, "Why has Your Highness suddenly become so serious? Is there something unusual in this letter? Your Highness might as well open it and read it to see what instructions Your Majesty has. Perhaps there is indeed an urgent matter at home."
Mo Lin understood that he recognized Zheng Huiyi's handwriting. The handwriting, like the person, was neither beautiful nor neat, and was really hard to compliment.
Zheng Dinglian glanced at him, his tone slightly teasing: "Are you bored out of your mind?"
Mo Lin quickly waved his hand and explained, "This humble general is only worried about whether there has been any change in the young master's family."
Zheng Dinglian glared at him, kicked him, and laughed and scolded, "Go, train properly! You suffered such a crushing defeat in last night's battle, which shows that your daily training is not enough. Starting today, add an extra hour of training every day!"
Mo Lin cried out in pain and pleaded, "Your Highness, please add another hour! We really can't take it anymore!"
The daily training was already exhausting; adding another hour would surely leave everyone completely drained!
Mo Lin cursed himself inwardly for being too talkative. If he had known this would happen, he shouldn't have asked that question in the first place.
Zheng Dinglian glared coldly at Mo Lin, then carried the letter into his tent. He casually tossed the letter onto the table, not even glancing at it.
He had already anticipated the contents of the letter; it would be nothing more than his sister's constant complaints about him, and she might even try to sow discord and badmouth him in the letter.
As night fell, Zheng Dinglian, after finishing his military training, finally found a moment to pick up a piece of paper and write a reply to Zheng Huiyi. The words in the letter were concise and powerful, yet also full of warnings.
"Behave yourself! If you dare to talk back to your sister-in-law again, I'll teach you a lesson when I get back!"
Zheng Huiyi painstakingly wrote two long letters of complaint, but her brother didn't even read them and only replied with a few words.
After finishing his letter, Zheng Dinglian sat there with a gloomy expression, his heart filled with depression.
Why didn't she write to him? With such intense strife in the household, didn't she ever consider asking him for help?
Even if she doesn't need his help, shouldn't she at least show some concern for him? After all, they are husband and wife. If something were to happen to him on the battlefield, wouldn't she be left a widow for the rest of her life?
The thought made Zheng Dinglian feel even more uneasy.
Suddenly, Gu Qinlan's delicate and beautiful face, like a lotus emerging from water, flashed into Zheng Dinglian's mind, and a bitter feeling welled up in his heart.
Well, perhaps she never took it to heart at all.
He suddenly regretted it. On the night of their parting, he shouldn't have said that if he died on the battlefield, he would allow her to marry someone else.
In this way, the already fragile emotional foundation will be completely destroyed, and she will probably become even more indifferent to him.
Perhaps she not only didn't care, but even secretly longed for the life of a widow.
...
Zheng Dinglian felt an overwhelming sense of unease.
However, once the words were spoken, they could not be taken back, like spilled water.
How can I leave a deeper impression on her?
The two places are separated by a great distance...
Zheng Dinglian glanced down at the letter on the table.
Oh, and he can write letters!
Although it may seem unmanly for a grown man to take the initiative to show affection to a woman, well... what can he do when he is a man?
A real man shouldn't be ashamed of taking the initiative.
Zheng Dinglian instantly convinced himself, grabbed a pen and paper, and began writing a letter to Gu Qinlan.
Half an hour later, Zheng Dinglian's desk was piled high with discarded paper balls.
He spent half an hour, but still couldn't write a satisfactory letter.
If he went too far, he felt he was being too verbose and lacking in masculinity; if he went too far, he worried he wouldn't be able to clearly convey his feelings.
If his writing wasn't satisfactory, he would crumple it into a ball and start over, resulting in a mountain of crumpled paper.
Finally, as night fell, Zheng Dinglian finished a relatively satisfactory letter. He carefully blew on the ink to dry it, then folded the letter neatly, put it in an envelope, sealed it himself, and summoned the guards outside the tent.
"Send the letter to the post station and make sure they take it seriously and deliver it as soon as possible."
The guard accepted the order and left with the letter.
Zheng Dinglian watched the guards disappear into the distance, his heart filled with anticipation for Gu Qinlan's reply.
