"It's so delicious! I've never seen such big chestnuts before. They're absolutely amazing!"
Wang Juan opened her little mouth, revealing her small tiger teeth, and gnawed open the chestnut shell, eating with great relish.
"It's good that it's delicious, but after you finish eating, you have to tell me what happened with that leave slip."
Liu Feng subtly changed the subject, steer the conversation toward the main topic.
"Leave request form? What leave request form?"
Wang Juan put on an innocent look, with a sweet chestnut in her mouth, clearly trying to get away with it.
"Wasn't it the leave request you wrote that said 'I'm sick and need treatment'?" Liu Feng asked.
"Haha, so that's what you meant!" Wang Juan couldn't help but laugh, her laughter clear and melodious.
"Isn't it funny? You're building your happiness on my suffering?" Liu Feng retorted.
"Didn't you say you had a cold, fever, and stomachache, and asked me to write this down? I wrote it exactly according to your 'script,' didn't you expect that?" Wang Juan laughed.
"Oh, Wang Juan, you're deliberately messing with me. Aren't you afraid I'll retaliate?" Liu Feng asked, feigning seriousness.
"Try getting revenge on me! I'm so scared!" Wang Juan said defiantly, spreading her little paws as if to pounce on Liu Feng.
"Stop! I was just joking!" Liu Feng quickly surrendered. He didn't want to be fooling around with a young girl on the street and become a laughing stock.
After getting to the bus stop, I still had to wait for the bus.
Liu Feng handed the two bags to Wang Juan and said, "These are specially prepared for you. The chestnuts are delicious whether boiled or stir-fried. Let me know when you've finished eating."
"Thank you for giving me so many wild treasures. In return, let me tell you a little story from yesterday!" Wang Juan took the bag.
She accepted all of Liu Feng's gestures without hesitation.
"Speaking of yesterday, when you called me, my mom suddenly came over. I quickly covered my phone with my hand, but she still found it... Guess what happened?" Wang Juan's eyes were full of smugness and cunning.
"I bet your mom asked you where you got the phone, and your answer didn't satisfy her. In the end, she made you stick your butt out and gave you a good spanking," Liu Feng guessed, deliberately exaggerating.
"Oh, Liu Feng, are you still holding a grudge about the leave slip? But let me tell you, you're wrong!" Wang Juan said smugly, winking playfully.
"No, no, this is just normal logical deduction. Think about it, this phone you're holding looks like it costs at least several thousand yuan, right? Do you think your mom would believe your explanations?" Liu Feng argued.
"You're not saying you found it when you went out, are you? Was I right? Am I too smart?"
"Haha~" Liu Feng laughed.
"Haha~" Wang Juan laughed along, her eyes crinkling with amusement as she said, "Congratulations, you guessed wrong again!"
"I guessed wrong?" Liu Feng asked in surprise. "Then what was the result? How did you get past your mother?"
“I said, ‘This phone in my hand is a toy!’” Wang Juan happily revealed the answer.
"Toys? Your mom was fooled by you like that?" Liu Feng looked at Wang Juan in disbelief.
"Otherwise what? My mom doesn't have a cell phone, and she doesn't even know what a real cell phone looks like. Are you just hoping my mom will beat me up before you're satisfied?" Wang Juan deliberately put on a stern face, but she couldn't hide the smile in her eyes.
"How could that be? I was worried your mom would find out at school and beat me up too. It was your cleverness that saved your bottom and me. I'm so surprised!" Liu Feng praised, "You're so smart, incredibly smart!"
A short while later, the bus slowly pulled up, and Liu Feng helped her carry the bag onto the bus.
Wang Juan sat by the window, no longer feeling carsick, and the two waved goodbye.
