Inside the medical school research institute, Hua Tuo was the first to arrive. After pushing open the door, he immediately looked towards the cage containing the piglets, where several trainees were also gathered.
"Dr. Hua, you've arrived!"
Upon hearing the door open, the students quickly stood up and bowed to Hua Tuo.
"Hmm! How's the situation?"
Hua Tuo nodded, asked a question, and walked quickly toward the pig. Several students quickly made way for him.
One of the slightly older trainees shook his head. "This piglet is dead!"
Hua Tuo frowned upon hearing this, squatted down in front of the cage, and reached out to feel the piglet's body temperature. It was still warm. Then he pried open the piglet's eyes and found that the piglet's pupils had begun to turn white, indicating that it had just died.
"Take it out!"
"promise!"
After giving the order, Hua Tuo turned around and went to his work area. He took out a cloth bag containing a set of tools that Mo Shang and the others had personally crafted for him.
Several trainees hurriedly lifted the pig out and placed it on a workbench.
Hua Tuo, holding the cloth bag in his hand, looked at the students and noticed their bloodshot eyes and weary faces. He spoke gently:
"You've been keeping watch here all night, so skip the exercise today and go back to get some rest!"
"Dr. Hua, then we'll take our leave!"
Seeing that Dr. Hua, who was usually taciturn and aloof, was so gentle with them today and even said so many more words, the students felt flattered.
After bowing to Hua Tuo once more, the group walked out of the research institute with expressions of happiness and excitement on their faces.
After the students left, Hua Tuo placed the cloth bag on the workbench, then took a tray and took out the tools from the bag one by one, placing them on the tray.
These tools were specially made knives, tweezers, and pliers of various sizes, which Liu Hong had Mo Shang secretly craft for dissection.
Throughout the entire medical school, apart from Hua Lao and Zhang Zhongjing and his disciples, no one else knew about the existence of this tool.
In the eyes of Zhang Zhongjing and others, dissection was not unacceptable after witnessing Hua Tuo's medical skills. They also understood that the progress of medicine was fundamentally based on the deaths of people, and moreover, on a continuous large number of deaths.
However, some things should not be publicized before progress is made. Just like Hua Tuo, who dissected corpses and explored the secrets of the human body, it was not a great disrespect to him, but rather a respect and awe for life.
Soon Zhang Zhongjing and Dong Gan also arrived at the research institute. When they saw the piglet being carried out and placed on the workbench, the two of them quickly surrounded it.
Dong Gan asked, "Yuanhua, how is it? When did this piglet die?"
"It was about 15 minutes ago. From the time the mold was applied until now, about five hours have passed."
Hua Tuo then said, "The specific cause of death is unknown, or it may have been due to the worsening of the wound, or perhaps it is related to the mold!"
Zhang Zhongjing nodded and said, "Alright! Let's check the wound first, and then we'll determine the cause of death!"
"kindness!"
Then Hua Tuo gently untied the bandage on the pig's hind leg wound, while Zhang Zhongjing and Dong Gan watched Hua Tuo's actions with tense expressions.
Soon, Hua Tuo removed the bandage, and the group stared intently at the wound.
The mold applied to the wounds had been soaked through by the small amount of pus flowing from the wounds and stuck to the wounds.
Then Hua Tuo took a small, sharp knife and carefully scraped the mold off the wound. After a short while, the mold was cleaned up by Hua Tuo, and the wound on the pig's body was revealed to the group.
After seeing it clearly, Dong Gan's expression showed a hint of surprise, "Although the wound is still festering, it is obviously much better than before!"
Zhang Zhongjing nodded excitedly, "Yes! And the wound is a little dry, showing obvious signs of healing!"
"But this piglet is dead!!"
Hua Tuo's words brought the two men back to reality, and Zhang Zhongjing and Dong Gan couldn't help but exchange a glance.
Dong Gan's expression was somewhat grave. "Indeed, it seems that this mold, like some potent medicinal herbs, can both cure diseases and kill. We still need to investigate the cause of death of this piglet!"
Hua Tuo nodded. "Not bad!"
The three then began a comprehensive examination of the pig's cause of death.
After the examination, the three of them, looking somewhat somber, gathered together again.
Zhang Zhongjing pondered for a moment before speaking, "Although the death of this piglet was related to its previous infection and fever, under normal circumstances, it should have been able to hold on for another two days or so. I don't think that was the main cause of its death."
Then Zhang Zhongjing looked at Dong Gan, who understood and said, "Judging from the bloodshot eyes and the trace of white foam left at the corner of its mouth, I think it seems to be somewhat similar to poisoning!"
After Dong Gan finished speaking, the two looked at Hua Tuo, who was deep in thought. Dong Gan asked, "Yuanhua, what do you think?"
Hua Tuo thought for a moment and then said, "Besides what you've said, I think there's a third possibility!"
Zhang Zhongjing asked, "Oh? What's going on?"
Hua Tuo pondered for a moment before speaking, "Mold only appears when things are close to rotting, so I guess its function is to devour and decompose."
If it were to directly contaminate living things, it would not only devour and decompose the pus, but it would also likely devour and decompose the very things necessary for life!
