An Chaoli looked the bald man up and down, then asked, "Did you come from the south? Have you ever been to Shengjing?"
The bald man naturally refused to admit it: "I am a disaster victim, how could I have entered Shengjing? I have never been there."
An Chaoli had someone remove the bald man's shoes and immediately questioned him: "These are the new coarse hemp shoes that were fashionable in Shengjing last month. They're only sold in Shengjing. You said you've never been there, so where did you get these coarse hemp shoes from?"
The bald man's eyes darted around, and he said in a flustered manner, "Th-those were shoes I picked up on the road. How would I know they were coarse hemp shoes?"
"You certainly know how to pick up bargains. These coarse hemp shoes may look ordinary, but they were snapped up as soon as they were released. Ordinary people can't even buy them anymore!"
After this questioning, the disaster victims had already made their judgment: the bald man's words had too many loopholes.
Yi Chenli suddenly added, "When the food was being distributed just now, everyone drank it as soon as they received their share. Only you were looking around, not knowing what you were looking at. Besides, you spilled your bowl of porridge, and you barely ate any."
If they were truly disaster victims, starving and desperate, how could they bear to throw away food?
The group carefully compared the bald man with the disaster victims. The disaster victims had been starving for a long time, and their faces were sallow. But the bald man had an oily face and was much fatter than the others.
The guards started pulling at the bald man's clothes. After only a couple of pulls, a large bag of silver and a paper-wrapped roast chicken fell out. Half of the roast chicken had been bitten off, and the other half had obviously been eaten.
The evidence is undeniable.
The disaster victims finally realized that they had been tricked.
Their journey to Shengjing was arduous, and what they hated most was that someone had impersonated them. The bald man not only impersonated them, but even used them to attack the imperial court. They nearly caused a major disaster.
The disaster victims were furious. Some spat directly at the bald man's face and shouted, "Kill the liar! Kill the liar!"
Just then, the guards loosened their grip, and several disaster victims rushed forward, hitting and kicking the bald man. The bald man could only howl and was used as a target.
Despite being beaten, the bald man continued to argue: "So what if I'm not a disaster victim? The camp is out of food. These corrupt officials will abandon you sooner or later. You lot, just wait to die."
The victims' fists continued to rain down, showing just how much they hated him.
Seeing that the bald man had been beaten enough, Yi Chenli signaled the guards to take him away.
This person must have been instructed to do something. We can't let him get killed without finding out what happened.
Seeing that the situation was dire and knowing he was powerless to change anything, the bald man looked at the sky in despair, his mouth wide open, trying to swallow something.
Yi Chenli reacted quickly: "He wants to commit suicide. Dislocate his jaw."
With a snap, the bald man's jaw dislocated, and a small pill fell out of his mouth.
"Keep an eye on him."
The bald man, unable to die, began to feel fear, his eyes filled with terror.
Unfortunately, no one could save him.
The farce has finally come to an end.
However, the food problem remains unresolved.
In front of the disaster victims, Yi Chenli said sincerely and frankly, "The army is indeed out of food. The supplies I arranged to replace the food were supposed to arrive tomorrow. However, I recently received news that they encountered a flood on the way, and the supplies will probably arrive a few days later."
This was an unexpected turn of events that Yi Chenli hadn't anticipated, and it certainly caught everyone off guard.
Given the current situation, it seems we can't avoid going hungry.
