Chapter 1131 Grand Finale: Return of an Old Friend (39)
The people are not fools. Since ancient times, there has been a saying that "returning favors to others" (yi yi ren ge ji fa ren). A wise ruler will always be supported by the people wherever he is.
The soldiers of Daliang are returning home.
Returning home after a victory was always a matter of honor. Households whose soldiers were still alive naturally felt proud. Even if someone died on the battlefield, while saddened, they also felt proud.
The people in Longye City were almost running around in joy, waiting for the return of the victorious army.
Compared with the bustling atmosphere among the people, the palace was deserted.
Luo Tan sat in the courtyard, the autumn sun shining brightly and warming his skin. The courtyard was covered with books, and Jingzhe and Guyu were drying them in the sun.
Luo Tan looked at them and laughed, saying, "Back in Xiaochun City, she always took these books out to dry in the sun. I thought, the books won't get damaged, so why bother with such fuss? I never expected that now, I'd be the one taking the initiative to do all this for her."
The man in blue standing next to her didn't say anything.
Pei Lang seemed to have aged significantly overnight. He worked silently. Without Shen Miao's instructions, he couldn't read the memorials. Every day he just read books, unable to do anything else. These futile days seemed to make him very miserable.
There was no joyful atmosphere in the palace.
Aunt Tao came out holding two children. Luo Tan quickly stood up and took one.
"The young masters are all very healthy," Aunt Tao said with a smile. "Nurse said they were very well behaved at night and didn't make any noise."
Luo Tan also smiled and said, "You are so well-behaved, just like mother." His voice stopped abruptly.
Pei Lang's gaze fell on the two children, and his eyes dimmed slightly.
"I really can't tell which one is the older brother and which one is the younger brother." Luo Tan changed the subject: "They were born exactly the same. If it's like this now, what will we do in the future?"
Aunt Tao smiled and said, "It's okay. We can tell them apart by changing their clothes and dressing them up later. Besides, children will have different temperaments when they grow up, so we'll be able to tell them apart naturally."
"But what should I call them?" Luo Tan worried. "Which one is the older brother and which one is the younger brother? My little cousin hasn't even had time to give them names..." She paused, then smiled ruefully. "I always say I won't bring it up, but I keep bringing it up."
Aunt Tao saw this and wanted to say a few words of comfort, but she saw Guyu and Jingzhe hurried in from outside. Guyu said, "The prince is back!"
"What?" Pei Lang and Luo Tan were both stunned. According to the Daliang army's pace, it would take them over a month to return to the capital.
"The prince has returned with his men." Guyu whispered, "But Madam..."
After a pause, Pei Lang said softly, "Let's go and take a look."
Xie Jingxing strode into the palace. In just one year, so many things had changed. With the passing of Emperor Yongle and Empress Xiande, the huge palace seemed to have become much quieter.
Eunuch Deng smiled and said, "Your Highness, please go and see the two young masters first. Aunt Tao and Miss Luo are playing with them."
Xie Jingxing frowned: "Where's Shen Miao?"
Before he finished speaking, he saw Luo Tan and Aunt Tao approaching from the back of the hall, around the screen, holding the children in their arms, with Pei Lang following behind them.
The baby in the cradle had probably just woken up and was waving his little hands lively. His chubby little hands looked especially cute in the sun.
Xie Jingxing paused.
"Where's Shen Miao?" he spoke slowly.
Pei Lang took a step forward and said softly, "Go check on her."
