Chapter 9 Pei Xiucai

A young man walked in from outside. He looked to be in his early twenties, dressed in a simple blue shirt. He had a straight face, but a slightly frail build. He looked like a straightforward gentleman. He walked in and praised, "You're right. Love has dignity. I don't mean to mock or disparage it. Although Guangwen Hall is a place for teaching, moral character also requires diligent cultivation."

All the students were silent.

Shen Miao stared at the young man closely.

Pei Lang, the teacher of mathematics and literati at Guangwen Hall, possessed both talent and integrity. He was the only teacher at Guangwen Hall who was a mere scholar and was allowed to teach. Pei, with his gentle and patient disposition, commanded greater respect among his students than other strict teachers. Even for those like Shen Miao who frequently neglected their studies, Pei never reprimanded them, patiently explaining everything over and over again.

If that were the case, this man would indeed be a good gentleman. His character, talent, and learning were both exceptional. Unfortunately, Shen Miao also knew of his other identity.

Fu Xiuyi's most trusted advisor, Pei Lang, was later appointed Imperial Preceptor after Fu Xiuyi ascended the throne. Imperial Preceptor Pei Lang was in high spirits, second only to the emperor and above everyone else.

As a national teacher, he did a very good job. Shen Miao thought that Pei Lang was an intelligent and upright person, but when the crown prince was deposed, he said nothing.

Shen Miao and Pei Lang had a pretty good personal relationship. It was Pei Lang who had originally proposed Shen Miao go to Qin as a hostage. Pei Lang said, "This is all for the sake of Ming Qi. If Your Majesty can help Your Majesty with this urgent need, the entire country will be blessed by Your Majesty in the future, and everyone in the world will be grateful for Your Majesty's kindness."

But in fact, when she returned to the palace five years later, there was a new Madam Mei in the harem, and Pei Lang's subordinates, who used to respect her, began to be wary of her.

When the Crown Prince was deposed, Shen Miao even knelt down and begged Pei Lang, because Pei Lang was Fu Xiuyi's confidant, and as long as Pei Lang asked, Fu Xiuyi would definitely listen to his advice. However, Pei Lang helped her up and said to her, "Your Majesty, your Majesty has made a decision, and even this humble servant can do nothing about it."

"Pei Lang! Are you just going to watch the Crown Prince being deposed? You know clearly that deposing the Crown Prince is a wrong thing to do!" She questioned angrily.

"This is the inevitable trend, Madam, just accept your fate." Pei Lang sighed.

Just accept your fate.

How can one accept one's fate? If one were to be reborn and still accept one's fate, wouldn't that be too tragic and too hateful?

Shen Miao stared gravely at the young man in front of her. He was upright, he stood by someone in need, he was gentle, yet he was also cold and ruthless. As a subject, Pei Lang was a loyal minister, always thinking of the country for its own sake. But… as long as he sided with Fu Xiuyi, he was destined to be at war with her forever!

At this time, Fu Xiuyi probably hasn't conquered Pei Xiucai yet. So, should he cut off their possibility before then and pull Pei Xiucai to his side? Or should he simply... strangle him in the cradle first?

Pei Xiucai put down the scroll in his hand, and sensitively noticed that someone was looking at him. He raised his head and met Shen Miao's ambiguous eyes.

Shen Miao was sitting relatively far back, but even so, she still looked at him stubbornly and attentively. This feeling was somewhat strange. Pei Xiucai felt that the gaze contained a kind of scrutiny and judgment, as if weighing the pros and cons, judging something. Extending this a little further, it was a critical look down on him.

He paused, wanting to see Shen Miao's expression more clearly, when he saw the girl pick up the pen on the table and lower her head. Pei Lang smiled inwardly and shook his head. How could a little girl have such a condescending expression? As for judging and scrutinizing, that was even more impossible. Shen Miao was the most stupid and cowardly person in the entire Guangwen Hall.

He tidied up his things and started today's class.

The entire second grade student class was a little drowsy.

Math classes were inherently boring, and no matter how brilliant Pei Xiucai's teachings were, they were fourteen or fifteen years old, at the age of whimsy, so how could they possibly absorb them? Furthermore, it was a beautiful, crisp autumn day, and everyone was a little dozed off.

Any other teacher would have grabbed a ruler and started scolding, but Pei Lang was the gentlest and never punished his students. Therefore, everyone in his class was the most courageous. Except for Shen Qing, who always ranked first in academics, who listened attentively, the rest of the class was bored and went about their own business.

But Shen Miao is different today.

She stared at Pei Xiucai without blinking, sitting upright, seemingly listening intently. This was truly unbelievable, considering she hated studying, and even math had no interest in it. It was a miracle she wasn't asleep, and how could she actually be paying attention in class?

Sitting at the same table with Shen Miao was a pretty girl wearing a thin jacket and skirt embroidered with chrysanthemum patterns. She had a somewhat arrogant look on her face. Seeing Shen Miao like this, she couldn't help but look at her in surprise, and from time to time she glanced sideways at Shen Miao's attentive listening to the class.

How could Shen Miao care about so many things? In her previous life, she had no interest in math, but after becoming the Queen, everything was initially unstable, and she had to be frugal to maintain her harem. As the Queen, she also had to cut down on expenses. After doing it herself, she found math not so difficult. From the big expenses related to etiquette to the small things like the cups and snacks for the concubines, the accounts were numerous and complicated, and she had reviewed them all. What could these math books count for?

She just wanted to try harder to see clearly what kind of person Pei Xiucai was.

Only in this way can she know what method is more appropriate for this person.

Her focused expression was considered very unusual by the young girl beside her. After the book and math class was over and Pei Xiucai left, Shen Miao withdrew her gaze.
