Chapter 153 I learned medical skills

Chapter 153 I learned medical skills

The two found a fairly intact room in the villa, which contained only a bed and a table; it was very simple.

The rain was getting heavier and there was thunder. Ye Wanning sat at the table, feeling a little scared—she had been afraid of thunder since she was a child.

Pei Zhi noticed this and took out a handkerchief from his pocket, handing it to her: "Don't be afraid, it's just thunder, it will pass soon."

Ye Wanning took the handkerchief and hummed in agreement, then quietly moved closer to Pei Zhi. The two sat at the table, the only sounds being the rain and thunder outside, creating a somewhat ambiguous atmosphere.

Ye Wanning woke up at night needing to urinate. After hesitating for a long time, she had no choice but to gently push open the door with a lantern.

As soon as she stepped into the yard, she saw a snake more than a meter long, flicking its tongue under the light, slowly crawling towards her.

"Ah!" Ye Wanning screamed in fright, turned around and tried to run, but her legs were too weak to obey her commands.

Pei Zhi rushed over upon hearing the noise. Upon seeing the snake, he pulled Ye Wanning into his arms without saying a word, and with his other hand, he drew the sword from his waist and flicked it lightly.

The snake suddenly flew out and disappeared into the woods. Ye Wanning, still shaken, clung tightly to Pei Zhi's clothes, her body trembling.

She could clearly feel Pei Zhi's body temperature and heartbeat; her ears burned, but she dared not let go. "It's alright, the snake is gone," Pei Zhi said gently.

He gently patted Ye Wanning's back to help her calm down. Ye Wanning leaned against him and it took her a while to calm down.

She let go of his hand, her cheeks flushed, and dared not look at him: "Thank you, you saved me again."

Pei Zhi hummed in agreement, released her, and casually wiped the cold sweat from her forehead. Both of them trembled slightly when his fingers touched her skin.

He withdrew his hand and said softly, "It's chilly at night, don't stay outside too long, go back inside quickly."

Ye Wanning nodded and followed Pei Zhi back to the room. There was only an oil lamp in the room, and the dim light shone on their faces, creating a somewhat strange atmosphere.

Pei Zhi offered her the only bed: "You sleep on the bed, I'll make do at the table for the night."

“No need,” Ye Wanning quickly said, “The bed is big enough, we can each sleep on one side. You’ve had a long day, don’t push yourself.”

Pei Zhi hesitated for a moment, then nodded in agreement. The two lay on the bed, some distance between them, and neither spoke.

Ye Wanning stared at the ceiling, her mind filled with the feeling of Pei Zhi holding her just now—his embrace was warm, making her feel inexplicably at ease.

"Are you asleep?" Pei Zhi suddenly asked, breaking the silence. "Not yet," Ye Wanning replied softly.

"The evidence I find today, I'll have someone hand it over to the Prefect of the Capital tomorrow, and the herbal medicine merchants will definitely pay the price," Pei Zhi said in the darkness.

"If you ever want to investigate something like this in the future, you must tell me. Don't take the risk yourself."

"I understand." Ye Wanning felt a warmth in her heart. "Pei Zhi, why are you so good to me?"

After a moment of silence, Pei Zhi said softly, "Because you deserve it."

Those five words made Ye Wanning's heart skip a beat. She turned around and looked at Pei Zhi's profile; in the dim light, his features appeared exceptionally soft.

She suddenly felt that perhaps she could try to let go of the shadows of her past life and accept the goodness of this man.

Neither of them slept well that night. As dawn approached, the rain finally stopped. Pei Zhixian got up and put away the account books: "Let's go back, so the people in the manor won't have anything to do with it."

Ye Wanning nodded and followed him back to the General's Mansion.

Ye Wanning thought that the maids in the mansion would occasionally have headaches and fevers, but they were afraid of the trouble and dared not say so, so she wanted to teach them some simple medical skills.

For example, they learned how to distinguish between wind-cold and cold, and how to press acupoints to relieve pain, so that they could respond to emergencies. When the news spread, the maids were very happy and came to her courtyard to listen to the lessons.

Ye Wanning divided them into groups and spent an hour each day teaching them to recognize medicinal herbs, learn acupoints, and practice acupressure techniques.

"Look carefully, everyone. This acupoint is called Hegu (LI4), located at the web between the thumb and index finger. If you have a toothache or headache, press it firmly for a few minutes and it will feel better."

As Ye Wanning spoke, she pointed to the web of her hand to demonstrate. The maids studied diligently, asking questions every few days, which Ye Wanning patiently answered.

The courtyard was bustling with activity; even Xiao Cui, who was usually quiet, was eagerly following along. Just then, Liu Yue's voice drifted in.

"My cousin-in-law is quite free, having time to teach maids such basic things. It's just a skill that's not presentable, is it really worth the trouble?"

"The maid has learned medicine; does she intend to become a doctor and steal her cousin-in-law's job?"

Upon hearing this, the maids stopped what they were doing, lowered their heads, and dared not utter a sound. Ye Wanning, however, was not annoyed and smiled, saying, "Cousin, what you said is incorrect."

"Medical skills have no inherent superiority or inferiority; the ability to save lives is a good skill. The maids have these skills, they can take care of themselves, and they can help others in times of need. What's wrong with that?"

"Hmph, I think you're just bored and have nothing better to do!" Liu Yue pouted and deliberately kicked the herbs in a maid's hand to the ground.

She sneered, "What's so good about these tattered weeds? It's a waste of time!"

The maid was startled and quickly knelt down to apologize: "Miss Liu, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to!"

"How dare you talk back!" Liu Yue raised her hand to hit the maid. Ye Wanning stopped her, saying relentlessly, "Cousin, the maids just want to learn something, you don't need to treat them like this!"

"What does it have to do with you if I scold the maids of the Pei family?" Liu Yue shook off Ye Wanning's hand and adopted an arrogant posture.

"Xiao Cui, my... my stomach... hurts so much..." Xiao Cui suddenly clutched her stomach and squatted on the ground, her face pale.

Ye Wanning helped her up and squatted down to press acupoints on Xiao Cui's abdomen: "Look, this is the Zhongwan acupoint. Pressing this can relieve stomach pain."

She pressed down hard, and soon Xiao Cui's complexion improved considerably, and the pain subsided. "Thank you, Madam, my stomach doesn't hurt anymore," Xiao Cui said gratefully.

General Pei happened to be passing by and saw this scene. He smiled and said, "Wan Ning did the right thing. There is no distinction between high and low medical skills. Anyone who can save lives has good skills."

"Liu Yue, if you have nothing to do, go back to your courtyard and stop fooling around here." Liu Yue's face immediately turned red. She wanted to retort, but seeing General Pei's gaze, she could only turn around and leave dejectedly.

The maids breathed a sigh of relief when they saw Liu Yue leave and continued to learn from Ye Wanning. Ye Wanning looked up and saw Pei Zhi standing in the corridor not far away.

He looked at her, his eyes filled with admiration. Their eyes met, and Pei Zhi smiled slightly, nodding at her. Ye Wanning's heart skipped a beat, and she quickly lowered her head.

But she couldn't help but smile—it felt so good to be praised. After instructing the maids, Ye Wanning was about to return to her room when Pei Zhi came over, carrying a cup of warm water.

"Are you tired? Have some water and rest for a while." Ye Wanning took the water glass, took a sip, and said softly, "Thank you, you helped me earlier too."

"Of course, you did a great job, and all the maids like you very much," Pei Zhi said with a smile.

As the early winter weather grew colder day by day, the number of patients at the clinic increased. Ye Wanning had just finished seeing a patient when a woman in a gorgeous dress walked in, surrounded by several servants.
