Chapter 109 I'll Spend My Life With You
The next morning, when Pei Zhi woke up, he saw Ye Wanning asleep by the bedside, her eyes bloodshot, indicating she hadn't slept all night. He tenderly stroked her hair, saying, "Wanning."
Ye Wanning woke up with a start. Seeing that he was awake, she immediately smiled and asked, "You're awake? How are you? Does it hurt?"
"It doesn't hurt, it doesn't hurt with you here." Pei Zhi asked with a smile, "You didn't sleep all night?"
"Mm." Ye Wanning nodded.
"I slept for a while." Ye Wanning avoided his gaze, got up to get the medicine, but was stopped by Pei Zhi.
"Don't lie to me, your eyes are all red." Pei Zhi squeezed her hand. "Go to sleep, I'm fine now."
"I'm not sleepy." Ye Wanning shook her head and held the medicine bowl to his lips. "Drink your medicine quickly, you'll feel better after you drink it."
Pei Zhi obediently drank the medicine. Ye Wanning looked at his gentle appearance and felt a warm glow in her heart, filled with gratitude.
“Wan Ning,” Pei Zhi said softly, “thank you.”
"Thank me for what?" Ye Wanning wiped the corner of his mouth for him.
"Thank you for staying by my side, thank you for not giving up on me." Pei Zhi held her hand tightly. "No matter what happens in the future, I will live well, go to Begonia Valley with you, and spend the rest of my life with you."
...
The night in Ci'an Hall was quiet, with only Xiao Lizi's intermittent coughing. Ye Wanning sat by the bed and touched his forehead; it was still hot.
"Sweetie, the pain will go away after you drink the medicine." She coaxed him softly, holding the bowl of medicine to his lips.
Little Chestnut frowned, took a sip, and winced from the bitterness: "Sister Wanning, the medicine is so bitter..."
"I'll give you candy after you finish your medicine." Ye Wanning smiled and took out a piece of malt candy from her pocket. "Look, it's your favorite malt candy."
Little Chestnut's eyes lit up. He finished his medicine in a few gulps, took the maltose candy and put it in his mouth, a smile finally appearing on his face. But not long after, he started coughing again, coughing so hard that his whole body trembled and tears streamed down his face.
"Why are you still coughing so much?" Ye Wanning patted his back with concern, a little anxious. Xiao Lizi had started having a fever and cough three days ago, and she had tried several different fever reducers without success; tonight it had only gotten worse.
At this moment, Pei Zhi pushed open the door and came in. He had just returned from the military camp and, upon hearing that Xiao Lizi was ill, rushed over immediately.
"How is it? Still not working?" he asked in a low voice, afraid of disturbing the other children.
"Hmm, the cough is getting worse." Ye Wanning shook her head, her eyes full of worry. "I suspect it's lung heat, but we're almost out of medicine. I'll have to go to the pharmacy tomorrow to buy some more."
Pei Zhi nodded, moved a chair to sit by the bed, and picked up a fever-reducing cloth to wipe Xiao Lizi's forehead: "I'll stay with you, you go and get some sleep, you still have to go to the clinic tomorrow."
"No need, I'll stay with you." Ye Wanning shook her head, sat down next to him and tucked Xiao Lizi in. "You just came back from the military camp, you must be tired."
"I'm not tired," Pei Zhi said with a smile. "I used to be able to go for days and nights without sleep when I was at the border. Besides, Xiao Lizi is my child too, so it's only right that I take care of him."
Ye Wanning said nothing more, and the two sat side by side on the edge of the bed with Xiao Lizi. Xiao Lizi coughed occasionally, and Pei Zhi would wipe his nose and change his fever-reducing cloth, while Ye Wanning patted his back and hummed a lullaby.
In the candlelight, the two figures nestled together, warm and cozy. Ye Wanning watched Pei Zhi's clumsy yet thoughtful movements, her heart filled with warmth—he was a general who protected the country, heroic and valiant on the battlefield, yet gentle and tender like a father in front of his family.
"Look at Xiao Lizi, she seems much more comfortable," Pei Zhi whispered in her ear, pointing to the child on the bed.
Ye Wanning noticed that Xiao Lizi's brows had relaxed a bit, and he was coughing less. "Hmm, the medicine might be working," she smiled, her worries lessening.
Dawn was approaching, and Ye Wanning leaned against the headboard, her eyelids gradually drooping, and she soon fell asleep. Pei Zhi gazed at her sleeping face, his heart filled with tenderness. He took off his coat and covered her with it, continuing to watch over Little Chestnut.
Not long after, Pei Zhi also fell asleep leaning against the headboard, still tightly holding Xiao Lizi's hand.
The morning sunlight streamed through the window, and Xiao Lizi slowly opened his eyes. Seeing Ye Wanning and Pei Zhi sleeping against the headboard, with the coat draped over Ye Wanning, he felt a warmth in his heart. He quietly took his little tiger plush toy from beside his pillow, placed it between the two of them, then closed his eyes again and drifted off to sleep sweetly.
When Ye Wanning woke up, she saw the little tiger beside her, and then looked at Pei Zhi and Xiao Lizi, who were fast asleep, and couldn't help but smile. She carefully got up, afraid of waking them, but still accidentally knocked the fever-reducing cloth out of Pei Zhi's hand.
Pei Zhi suddenly woke up, saw Ye Wanning, and immediately smiled: "You're up?"
"Hmm, why didn't you wake me up?" Ye Wanning wiped the sleep from the corner of his eyes.
"You're sleeping so soundly, I can't bear to wake you," Pei Zhi said with a smile, then glanced at Xiao Lizi, "Xiao Lizi seems to be alright, her fever has gone down."
Ye Wanning touched Xiao Lizi's forehead and found that it wasn't hot anymore: "That's great." She immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
At this moment, Xiao Lizi woke up, saw the two of them, and smiled, "Sister Wan Ning, Brother Pei, did you stay up all night and watch over me the whole time?"
"Yes, Little Chestnut is such a good boy, he's all better now." Ye Wanning smiled and patted his head.
Little Chestnut held up the little tiger: "I'll put the little tiger among you; he can protect you."
Ye Wanning and Pei Zhi exchanged a glance and smiled. Pei Zhi picked up Xiao Lizi and kissed him on the cheek: "Xiao Lizi is such a good boy. Brother Pei will take you to buy sugar paintings in the future."
"Great!" Little Chestnut clapped his hands happily.
...
The number of patients at the female clinic was increasing, including more elderly people and soldiers suffering from rheumatism. Their joints were swollen and painful, and some were even unable to walk. Ye Wanning saw this and felt heartbroken.
She searched through all the medical books her mother had left behind and finally found a prescription for treating rheumatism. However, the herbs were too potent, and she was afraid of side effects, so she never dared to try it.
"Miss, is this prescription really going to work?" Chun Tao asked, frowning as she looked at the medical book. "The aconite in that prescription is highly toxic; if it's not used properly, it could be fatal."
“I know, but this is the only prescription that can cure rheumatism.” Ye Wanning sighed. “Those patients are so pitiful, I want to give it a try.”
Just then, Pei Zhi walked in. Seeing her frowning, he quickly asked, "What's wrong? What's wrong?"
Ye Wanning handed the medical book to Pei Zhi: "This prescription can cure rheumatism, but I'm afraid of the side effects, so I dare not give it to patients."
Pei Zhi took the medical book, studied it carefully for a long time, and when he looked up, his gaze was firm: "I will try the medicine."
"No! This medicine is poisonous and too dangerous!" Ye Wanning immediately objected.
"I'm healthy, I'm fine," Pei Zhi said with a smile. "Besides, even if there were any problems, you could cure me. Aren't you amazing?"
