“This place is nice. We can grow some vegetables and continue raising chickens. It’s just that there aren’t enough rooms. I’ll live in the main room, and you can continue living in the inner room.”
Yang Yufen immediately made the arrangements, and Qin Nian dared not object.
"Mom, you must be tired from your journey. I'll go to the cafeteria to get some food. Here's the house key."
Qin Nian spoke.
"No need, I'm not tired. You can rest. If you need anything, you can go about your business. There's still some time before dinner, I'll take care of it."
Yang Yufen put down her load, took the three hens out of the basket, fed them some water and vegetable leaves, and then went out with a basket of eggs.
Qin Nian watched Yang Yufen leave, then thought for a moment and decided to follow her.
Yang Yufen knocked on the doors of her neighbors, and a woman of about the same age came out.
"Hello, sister. I'm Yang Yufen, Niannian's mother-in-law. My son is away on a mission, so I've come to visit my daughter-in-law. I'm not used to sleeping next to someone, and we don't have a bed at home. I was wondering if we could borrow a bench for a couple of days. It's from the eggs laid by our own chickens."
"Oh, these are from Researcher Qin's house. They're just a few benches. I'll go get them for you right away. You must have some free time at home."
The families of researchers are all quite well-mannered; at least the two families around Qin Nian's place—when Yang Yufen knocked on doors to borrow things, they all lent her things.
Qin Nian rarely interacts with people; she usually just nods and asks a question when she meets someone. But when she sees her mother-in-law able to borrow things from others and chat enthusiastically, it seems different from what her husband said.
"Mom, how about I sleep on the bench?"
Qin Nian watched as Yang Yufen quickly spread the bedding on the makeshift bed made of benches. Her mother-in-law was much taller than her, and the bench was rather short, so it wasn't comfortable for her to sleep. Even if she stretched her legs out, they would dangle on the ground.
"Just make do for a couple of days. Tomorrow I'll go buy some planks and we can make a bed in no time. Then we can just put up a curtain. Do you eat spicy food?"
Yang Yufen immediately changed the subject.
"I don't eat spicy food."
Qin Nian answered subconsciously, and then saw Yang Yufang turn around and go to the kitchen.
"Let's have something simple to eat today."
As Yang Yufen spoke, she lit the fire and scrubbed the pan. In a few quick movements, she poured oil into the pan and cracked two eggs into it.
Qin Nian looked at the full bowl of egg noodles. Although the noodles were dried noodles, the eggs smelled really good. They were fried in lard. Her mother-in-law had even exchanged some vegetables and scallions with the neighbors to add to the noodles.
Qin Nian tried her best to eat, but unfortunately, she didn't have a big appetite, and there was still some left in her bowl.
"You only eat this little bit?"
Yang Yufen looked at the leftover noodles in Qin Nian's bowl and realized why she was so thin; her brows furrowed involuntarily.
"Mom, I don't exercise much on weekdays, so I don't eat much. I'll eat this later."
Qin Nian also felt embarrassed. It was her mother-in-law's first time visiting, and she hadn't prepared anything. Not only did she make her mother-in-law sleep on a bench, but she also cooked for her, and she still had so much left over.
"Eat this egg. Noodles don't taste good if they're left out for too long. We can cook more later if we get hungry."
After Yang Yufen finished speaking, she poured the noodles from Qin Nian's bowl into her own, picked up her untouched egg, and then lowered her head to eat.
Qin Nian looked at the eggs in the bowl. Her mother-in-law had only cracked two eggs, and she had already eaten one.
"Eat quickly, it's getting late, get some rest. Don't you have to work tomorrow? Remember to take some time to collect your man's allowance."
Yang Yufen finished her meal in a few bites. People in the countryside are busy with work, so they don't eat very quickly.
"good."
Qin Nian snapped out of her daze, ate the egg, and then rushed to wash the bowl.
If my mother-in-law cooks all the food, it would be too much for her not to wash the dishes.
