Chapter 005: Overeating, To be continued next time (2/2)

"Hello, Sister Wang. I've come to exchange some vegetable seedlings. I've never seen so many of these vegetables before. And your crops are so well-tended, they're even better than what we grow in our fields."

Yang Yufen made a gesture of approval, praising her sincerely.

"I also come from the countryside and I love farming. Come, come, let me pick out some good ones for you."

Two eggs yielded a basket full of various vegetable seedlings. Yang Yufen, who farmed in the village, chatted happily with Aunt Wang. The two eggs were almost dropped on the ground before Aunt Wang finally accepted them.

Even so, he cut two bunches of grapes and gave them to the two of them.

Yang Yufen casually asked for a grape seedling, and then filled a jar with soybean paste for Aunt Wang.

"I have to thank you so much, Sister Liu. Otherwise, how would I have met Sister Wang? Sister Wang is such a generous person. I thought only the front yard was usable, but I didn't expect that the empty back yard could also be used. Isn't this much better than that tenement building?"

"That's right. If we get some bamboo strips from the backyard, build a fence, and plant vegetables, we won't have to worry about food all winter."

Yang Yufen washed the grapes and put them in a basket to dry. After planting all the seedlings, she started cooking: rice, braised pork belly with eggplant and green beans.

When Qin Nian returned, she saw that there were new changes in the yard, which was quite amazing.

"You're back. Wash your hands and eat."

Yang Yufen came out when she heard the sound and quickly filled the water bottle.

"mom."

Qin Nian called out, put down her bicycle, washed her hands, and went inside to help, only to find that Yang Yufen had already brought out the food.

"Have a meal."

Yang Yufen placed the bowl of rice in front of Qin Nian and uttered two words.

Qin Nian had no choice but to sit down and pick up her chopsticks to eat.

Qin Nian isn't a picky eater, but she doesn't like fatty meat. Today it's pork belly, and Yang Yufen specially sautéed it a little longer so that the fat would be rendered out and absorbed by the eggplant and green beans.

Qin Nian looked at the rice bowl in her hand. It was indeed her bowl, not the big bowl she used for noodles yesterday. But why was she so full today? It must be because her mother-in-law's cooking was too delicious.

Qin Nian didn't think much of it and reached out to clear the dishes.

Yang Yufen silently went to boil water. She pressed the rice with a spoon, pressing it down again and again. Her daughter-in-law only ate one bowl, so pressing it down firmly was fine. If she could finish it, she could continue next time.

"There are grapes in the basket, they've been washed, you can take them and eat them, they're sour, I don't like them."

The next morning, Qin Nian got up and found that today she wasn't having porridge, but an egg and a bowl of malted milk powder.

"Mom, you can keep the malted milk powder for yourself. I'm still young."

"Just eat what I'm told. I've made myself some."

After Yang Yufen finished speaking, she ignored Qin Nian and went outside to feed the chickens.

Three chickens are too few. Since we can also grow vegetables in the backyard, we should raise more. If we raise them now, they'll be ready to eat by the end of the year.

Seeing that her mother-in-law was even busier than herself, Qin Nian could only drink some malted milk powder, stuff the eggs in her pocket, and rush to the research institute.

"Hey girl, why did you buy so many chicks?"

Aunt Liu watched as Yang Yufen selected thirty chicks.

"They might not survive, so I'll buy a few more; they're not expensive anyway."
