"That's great! Studying is good. If everyone were like Nian Nian, how successful they would all be!"
Yang Yufen lowered her head slightly. She was old and used to being strong, but her childhood experiences, the girls in her village, and the girls she watched grow up—they hadn't received any education and weren't resilient enough; they had suffered far too much.
"Studying is good, especially for girls."
After muttering something to herself, Yang Yufen composed herself.
"I'll make some dried eggplant and potatoes to stew with the chicken later, and we'll eat it all here today."
“I have some sweet potato starch sheets, I’ll go get them and put some on the table too, the kids love them.”
Aunt Wang immediately stood up, put the child on the bed, and Professor Wen looked after him.
Yang Yufen plucked the chicken feathers clean, then took the basin to the kitchen.
When it gets cold, we cook big pot dishes, piping hot, with flatbreads and steamed rice buns. Everyone can eat whatever they like as their staple food.
"It's still more lively here. Lao Hu and the others are all busy this year, so let's have our New Year's Eve dinner here. The place is spacious enough, and the kids love it."
Professor Wen looked at the group of children who were engrossed in eating and couldn't help but make a suggestion.
"Sure, no problem at all. The three of us can come together. It's more lively with more people. Isn't the New Year all about the atmosphere?"
Yang Yufen had no objections whatsoever.
"I do! I do!"
Hu Zhenghao raised his left hand and shouted, while using his other hand to scoop up some rice noodles. The rice noodles soaked in soup were so delicious.
"Okay, let's celebrate the New Year at Grandma Yang's house this year. We'll start frying New Year's treats tomorrow!"
Yang Yufen smiled broadly. She had been looking after the children and hadn't had a chance to prepare for the New Year. This was just in time.
“The three of us are here together. The meatballs you fried before were really delicious. Even after the New Year, I still miss them.”
Aunt Wang was also very happy.
"Grandma Yang, I'll help too!"
"Okay, okay, you guys help eat it and taste whether it's salty or not."
Professor Wen left with his two grandsons, Da Bao and Er Bao, who were very reluctant to part with him.
"Brother, aren't you staying?"
"Why don't you go to Grandma's house with your brother?"
Yang Yufen found the child's expression somewhat amusing.
"No, brother's bed is too small to fit all of us. Goodbye, brother."
Da Bao thought for a moment and shook his head. He still had his brother Wang Xing.
"Alright, you three should probably go to sleep now. Tomorrow morning, Grandma is going to buy meat to fry for the New Year. If you're scared, go to Grandma Wang's house next door, understand?"
"good!"
The three children responded in unison. Wang Xing happily lay down in the middle of the bed, one on each side, stretching out his arms so that Da Bao and Er Bao could each hold one of them. Yang Yufen covered the three of them with a blanket.
Yang Yufen went to buy meat early in the morning, and she happened to be with Guixiang.
"You bought so much, haven't you prepared for the New Year yet?"
Gui Xiang could guess pretty much what Yang Yufen had bought just by looking at it.
"Yes, the children were all at home before, so it's not too late to prepare now."
"I'll pack some of the jujube cakes and other things for you to eat for the children. Since we started serving mutton soup, business has been much better than before."
Gui Xiang now looks a bit more prosperous than before.
"That's great, it saves me the trouble of doing it, and you guys don't need to stay open too late either, you only get a few days off a year."
