I think your mother-in-law is just used to being busy her whole life, and she feels uneasy when she has free time. Now that the children are older, they need to go to school and have their own playmates, so they're not as clingy to the adults anymore. It's understandable that your mother-in-law feels a sense of loss.
Professor Wen also sensed this. She still frequently goes to teach students, but it's the same thing. If she really wasn't allowed to teach, she would feel too idle.
