"Can we sell it for money?"
Hu Zhenghao is the oldest and has already begun to understand the importance of money; others don't have this, so he's unique!
The children's eyes lit up immediately, and they huddled together to discuss it.
Li Wu has the least pocket money among the group of children, but he wants to buy a lot of things!
"I'm sure someone will want to buy these colorful shuttlecocks, but we only have so many feathers, so we can't make many."
Yao Yao, being a girl, immediately got to the point: they all know how to make shuttlecocks, so this isn't difficult.
"No, there will be lots and lots of white feathers. I just went to the chicken farm on the other side, and the grandpa there said that all the chickens raised there are white-feathered."
Wang Xing spoke up.
"But you said they're chicks, so it'll take them a long time to grow up, right?"
Yao Yao has raised chicks before.
"You can ask Grandma where you can get more chicken feathers."
Li Wen spoke.
Children should ask adults for help when they can't solve their own problems, as Grandma once told them.
"Then go find my grandma."
Yao Yao's eyes lit up as well.
Shen Xianjun didn't notice what the group of children were doing. When he looked up again, the group of children had already run away.
The one-eyed old man, however, kept a close eye on it.
"Kids these days are so smart, great! They are the future of our country."
"Grandma, where can we find more white feathers?"
Yao Yao spoke.
What do you want the white feathers for?
Aunt Wang asked gently.
"We want to dye the white feathers to make shuttlecocks."
Yao Yao answered.
"Colorful shuttlecocks!"
Miao Miao excitedly added.
"Grandma Wang, we want to make colorful shuttlecocks to sell."
Hu Zhenghao spoke.
Aunt Wang knew about the children's money-making scheme, but she didn't let Yao Yao try it, because girls are too easily in danger.
"You guys are so smart to come up with such a great idea. We don't have many feathers right now, but we should be able to collect quite a few in a few days. Grandma will save them all for you then, okay? You can make money, but it can't interfere with your studies. You only have one day off today."
"Really? Thank you, Grandma!"
"Thank you, Grandma Wang!"
The group of children were very happy, and the fact that the adults didn't object was the best support they could receive.
The children got the answer and ran back. Although there would be more in a few days, they couldn't waste what they had now. If they picked out the feathers from one chicken, they could make several shuttlecocks.
However, Aunt Wang found inspiration in the children's words.
They raise white-feathered chickens, which they can produce and sell themselves into finished products. The chicken feathers can also be used for other purposes, so nothing is wasted.
Yang Yufen finally returned just before lunchtime.
After lunch, Aunt Wang pulled Yang Yufen aside to discuss it.
"Yufen, I've looked at this chicken. It's too big. It will take too long to roast, and we'll need to set up an oven. The chicken flavor is a bit bland, unlike our local chickens, but it does have a lot of meat and is very substantial."
"That's true. You're worried that the meat you make won't keep in hot weather."
Yang Yufen nodded. She had eaten lunch and thought it was alright; Old Zhou's cooking skills were undeniable.
“I once ate a dish where chicken was marinated and then smoked. It tasted great even when it was cold. However, I had only eaten it and heard about it, but I had never actually seen what ingredients were used for marinating and smoking.”
Aunt Wang had a deep impression of that dish; she had eaten it when she was a young girl, and she hadn't forgotten it even after all these decades.
