Chapter 31 Mom's Protecting You! (1/2)

military region

"Sir, some news has somehow spread that Comrade Shen Xianjun has not disappeared, but has betrayed us. What do you think we should do about this? If this rumor is confirmed, it will likely cause a lot of trouble for Comrade Shen's family."

"We can't let our comrades down. We need to investigate carefully first, find out where the information came from, and deal with it seriously. Who knows if someone deliberately tried to undermine morale? After we find out the truth..."

A moment of silence fell over the office.

Yang Yufen killed all eight large fish and prepared seasonings to marinate the fish meat.

"Mom, do you need my help?"

Qin Nian was bored, so she told her master's wife about the twins. She originally felt that she was in good health and wanted to go back to help, but her master's wife persuaded her not to.

"It's good that your mother-in-law is willing to support your work, but you can't take it for granted just because she's easy to talk to."

If you really can't sit still, I'll find you some books so you can continue studying. Our country needs talent right now, and you're smart enough to learn more so you can contribute more to our country in the future.

Since the book wasn't available anytime soon, Qin Nian naturally had nothing to do.

"No need for you. Mom will fry some small fish for you later and make some loach and tofu soup. Have some first. Mom will be done here soon."

Since the Lunar New Year is approaching, it's essential to prepare some food in advance.

Yang Yufen prepared all the ingredients: vegetable and radish fried vegetarian meatballs with tofu, sweet potato flour fried sweet meatballs, cat ear noodles, and noodle rolls.

The small fish are a bit more troublesome to prepare; they need to be coated in dough and eggs and then fried.

"Mom, won't we be able to finish all this fried food?"

This was the first time Qin Nian had ever seen so much food prepared for the New Year.

"I'll eat it myself, give it away as gifts, and use it to make a stew during the Lunar New Year. That should last until spring."

Yang Yufen didn't mention that pregnant women eat more later on, especially since Qin Nian was carrying twins, so she couldn't eat less. She would only feel at ease if she cooked more food for her.

Qin Nian sipped the loach and tofu soup by the stove, watching Yang Yufen scoop small fish out of the batter and fry them.

The moment the aroma wafted out, Qin Nian felt her mouth water.

Silently, she picked up the bowl and drank the soup, covering her mouth.

She wasn't craving it before; it must be the baby in her belly that's craving it.

"Try it quickly, be careful it's hot. If it's not flavorful enough, I'll add some more salt."

Yang Yufen scooped out the dozen or so small fish that had been cooked and placed them on a plate in front of Qin Nian. Then she stirred the ingredients for the vegetarian meatballs with chopsticks, scraped them with a spoon, formed them into balls, and put them into the pot.

Almost everything was fried a little bit first, and then all of them were placed in front of Qin Nian.

"Don't eat too much, it's easy to get a sore throat."

Frying dough sheets is the simplest thing to do. In no time, Yang Yufen had fried a basketful and set them aside to dry.

Go out and bring back the dough for the cat ears, slice it, shake it a few times, and put it in the pot. Another full basketful.

Half of the oil in the pot had been used up, so Yang Yufen added more oil.

Making fried sweet potato balls requires much more patience. Qin Nian ate a little of this and a little of that, and after she was full, she took the initiative to fry the sweet potato balls.

"Be careful not to burn yourself."

Yang Yufen watched anxiously for a while, making sure Qin Nian was alright, before going to do other things.

From morning till night, it was already past six o'clock when all the food was fried.

Qin Nian pointed to the winnowing baskets and hampers, seven or eight different kinds; her mother-in-law was simply amazing.

For dinner, we had fish soup with rice, which was readily available.

Qin Nian thought that was about it, but the next day she saw that her mother-in-law had brought back another bag of coarse sand.

"I'll also fry some melon seeds, peanuts, and beans. You can have them as a treat on weekdays, and they're easy to carry around. And there's a bag of rice puffs that Aunt Liu gave me. I'll make rice puff candy for you later."
