Chapter 32 The Old Courtyard (2/2)

Qin Nian's belly also swelled up, as if it were being inflated, swelling up in an instant.

"Today is the first day of the Lunar New Year. Put your books aside and go out for a walk."

After having dumplings together for breakfast, Yang Yufen spoke first.

"good."

Qin Nian has been engrossed in reading lately, and her mother-in-law has taken care of all the trivial matters of life. Even her teacher's wife said that she has changed a lot.

Gloves, scarf, earmuffs, and a thick hat—Yang Yufen had prepared everything for Qin Nian and handed them to her one by one.

"Mom, let's go take a look at the old house."

Qin Nian suddenly realized that she hadn't told her mother-in-law about her family's old house yet.

Yang Yufen just wanted to take Qin Nian out for a walk, whether it was a park or a department store, there was no fixed place to go.

"good."

The two places are located to the east and west of each other. Qin Nian originally said she would take a car, but Yang Yufen insisted on riding a tricycle, fearing that Qin Nian would be jostled on the crowded bus.

It took me more than two hours to ride the nearly 40-kilometer distance.

“This courtyard was passed down from my grandparents to my parents. The government took it over before, but it was returned to me the year before last. I originally wanted to rent it out, but I’m busy with work at the research institute, and I’m afraid it will be damaged again, so it’s been empty.”

Qin Nian took out her key and opened the door.

The courtyard has two sections. There are three small houses on the left after entering the main gate. You have to go through a second gate before you can see the courtyard.

The courtyard was somewhat dilapidated, but it was spacious, with two rooms each in the east and west wings, three rooms in the main hall, and two side rooms on each side, making a total of nine rooms.

There used to be a row of rear buildings, but they were taken away, so only the front buildings are left.

When the courtyard was returned, Qin Nian felt a pang of regret knowing that the back house couldn't be taken back. However, she knew that this was already a great achievement, especially since a wall had been built to separate the back, effectively making it a complete separation.

"Mom will come and clean it up for you later. I just saw that it's not far from the university, so I'll clean it up and rent it to college students. They are high-quality students."

"Okay, Mom will decide."

Qin Nian didn't care much about it; the house was uninhabited and gradually fell into disrepair.

"Mom, pack your things first today, don't go too far."

Yang Yufen couldn't bear to see the mess. The courtyard wasn't too badly damaged, so she first tidied up the fallen leaves and withered branches.

Qin Nian nodded. She hadn't really looked at the house carefully since it was returned, so she decided to reminisce about it today.

Qin Nian opened each room, and the rooms were empty. Apart from the pillars and beams, there were really no old things left.

If we're talking about old things, those flowerpots overgrown with withered grass in the yard are probably among the very few that have been preserved.

"There used to be a swing here. I loved swinging on it when I was a kid, but it was smashed later."

Standing in the courtyard, Qin Nian sighed, "The days of my childhood are gone forever."

After tidying up for three hours, Qin Nian gave the keys to Yang Yufen and then took her to eat at a local restaurant that she liked. Yang Yufen then rode her bike and took Qin Nian home.
