Chapter 39 July (2/2)

Bamboo carvings sell better than bamboo weaving, probably because they are cheaper. Yang Yufen is happy to do more bamboo carvings. She already knows how to carve simple patterns. In the past, she was busy with farm work and trying to earn work points. Now, apart from taking care of her children, she has more time.

When I get tired of practicing bamboo carving, I weave some small things. When I get tired of weaving, I think about building some small toys out of bamboo to amuse the children.

We no longer grow vegetables in the front yard; instead, we use it to dry our two children's clothes. Even though the children are small, they change their clothes very frequently, and the yard is full of clothes every day after washing them.

There's a grape trellis in the middle, and a melon trellis on the other side. The chickens have all been moved to the backyard, and firewood can be stored under the trellis.

She grows vegetables in the backyard just for herself; there's simply not enough to eat it all. The seedlings are all given to her by Aunt Wang, so she doesn't have to worry about anything.

When cutting bamboo, we would bring back firewood along the way. Sometimes, if the bamboo shoots looked good, we would also bring some back to boil, dry, and save for winter.

"Grandma Yang, I've come to see my brothers!"

Yao Yao's voice rang out from outside the courtyard.

"Yaoyao's here, come in quickly, it's sunny outside."

"Grandma Yang, my grandma asked me to bring you some ice cream!"

Yao Yao handed an ice cream to Yang Yufen.

"Yaoyao, eat! Why isn't your grandma here?"

"Grandma Yang is eating, and so am I. Mom says I can't eat too much, or my stomach will hurt."

Yao Yao waved her hand, indicating that she had one too.

"Yaoyao is such a well-behaved child."

Yang Yufen took the ice cream.

"When Grandma bought me ice cream, Dad took me to the Academy of Agricultural Sciences, so she told me to come and play with my younger brothers. She said she would come to pick me up later."

"Okay, we'll eat at Grandma Yang's house today. We'll have steamed egg custard."

Yang Yufen patted Yao Yao's little head; it was fluffy and very nice to touch.

"I love steamed egg custard the most!"

Yao Yao excitedly expressed her feelings and then went to the twins to play with them.

"Yaoyao, where's your mother?"

Yang Yufen suddenly remembered that if the child was on holiday, then Xiao Fang should also be on holiday.

"Mom went to another school, and we have fifteen days left until the holiday."

Children are always the happiest when they have a holiday.

Upon hearing this, Yang Yufen suddenly realized that it was already July, and Niannian had been gone for almost three months. Time had passed so quickly without her noticing.

I wonder how Niannian is doing, and whether she's taking good care of herself.

The weather in June and July can change in an instant. When Yang Yufen saw a large cloud drifting over, she quickly packed her things and took the child inside.

"Yaoyao and her brothers are playing inside the house. They will steam egg custard after Grandma Yang finishes tidying up the yard."

The wind howled across the sea, and the ships were like drifting leaves. A huge wave capsized the ships and people.

As the heavy rain fell, the sweltering temperature also dropped. By the time Yang Yufen had finished cooking, the twins had fallen asleep.

It was hot, so Yang Yufen made a bamboo bed herself and coaxed Yao Yao to take a nap while listening to the increasingly loud rain outside until it stopped as dusk fell.

"Godmother, I've come to pick up Yao Yao. Could you please look after her today?"

Fang Fen, who was riding her bicycle back, was still wearing a raincoat, indicating that she had just returned from outside.
