Aunt Wang brought grapes to visit the child and, while doing so, told Yang Yufen about the commotion she had overheard.
"I was wondering why someone suddenly asked me if I was still making strollers. Oh, I see. Actually, they're not hard to make. You can find a carpenter to make them. Just make a frame and sew a sturdy cloth into a pouch so the child can sit in it and play."
Yang Yufen said with a sudden realization.
“A wooden stroller would be so heavy, and they might not even have your craftsmanship. They all missed out. When their kids are older, they won’t need the stroller anymore, so I might be able to snag one.”
"What are you saying? How could I possibly lack children?"
Yang Yufen glared at Aunt Wang with annoyance.
"No, but why bother if there's something readily available?"
Yang Yufen washed the grapes, peeled them, and picked out the seeds. She gave one to each of the two children to hold and eat.
Da Bao put it in his mouth, his little face scrunched up, thinking he was going to throw it away, but then he put it in his mouth again.
Erbao watched his older brother eat before putting food in his own mouth.
"I see you brought back so many bamboo branches, are you going to be busy again?"
"You know me so well. I'm busy. Come and have some dried sweet potatoes. I'll take some back for Yao Yao and Xiao Fang later. Yao Yao hasn't come to play lately. Is she too much homework?"
"Yaoyao feels sorry for her mother. Xiaofang has been suffering from morning sickness lately, and Yaoyao helps her mother correct her homework after she finishes her own. She's like a little adult, so sensible that it breaks your heart."
"Then I'll pack the dried sweet potatoes for you, and you can go back and take care of Xiao Fang."
"No rush, no rush. Xiao Fang hasn't gotten off work yet. Give me some of your pickled cabbage too. Right now, it's the only pickled cabbage you've made that Xiao Fang can eat when cooking noodles. It's not easy for a woman to get pregnant."
"Okay, I specially bought two more jars to pickle vegetables. You can take one jar back later. When you've almost finished eating, just put new vegetables in to pickle. It's very simple."
With Wang Dameizi coming to look after the child, Yang Yufen hurried to get things done.
Then, as if they had planned it together, Wang and Liu would come in the morning and the afternoon to help Yang Yufen lighten the burden of taking care of the children, and occasionally tell her some interesting stories that happened in the family compound.
Time flies by so quickly. One autumn rain brings one chill, and by the time the twins were able to stand up while holding onto the bed railing, winter had already arrived.
"This old ginger and strong liquor really works when used to rub the bones. If I had known this method earlier, I would have suffered so much less in winter."
Winter came early this year, and Yang Yufen prepared winter clothes for her two children well in advance.
The second brood of chicks has also successfully hatched and now weighs half a pound. The electric blanket has been retired from the incubator and is now used on the bed.
Next to the wooden bed that Yang Yufen built in the main room, they put together an old bed that had been taken from Qin Nian's room. After laying out an electric blanket, the child was no longer afraid of getting cold while playing inside.
"If you had tiger bone wine, it would be even better for your old rheumatism, but unfortunately it's hard to find now. Ginger can dispel cold, so it might help a little."
“This is very useful. In previous years, I would never have dared to go out and visit others at this time. But it’s warm in your house.”
Liu Da Niang's daughter-in-law is pregnant and has moved back to live here, which makes it easier for her to take care of the two older children. Liu Da Niang also has more time to talk to Yang Yu Fen.
Yang Yufen was willing to burn coal and even installed a special exhaust pipe to vent the smoke from the coal stove. Cooking and boiling water were done in the center of the room, which made the room warm.
