“Xiao Fu…” Liang Mei’s face immediately turned red, and she glanced at Liang Fu sideways.
Liang Fu chuckled to herself. Her sister and brother-in-law had been married for quite some time, and while other couples had already had children, her sister's belly showed no signs of pregnancy.
Could it be...?
Liang Fu's eyes darted around, wondering if her brother-in-law was incompetent.
Lin Chaosheng tapped Liang Fu on the back of the head with his chopsticks. "What are you thinking about all day? Getting married and having kids, huh? I'll find you a man to marry tomorrow!"
"No, no!" Upon hearing that Lin Chaosheng wanted to marry her off, Liang Fu quickly picked up her rice bowl and ate heartily. "I'm afraid I'll starve to death if I marry into another family. After all, my sister and brother-in-law have raised me so well, and I can eat fine grains every day. I can't survive in another family!"
Liang Fu was telling the truth, and Lin Chaosheng was just joking; he didn't want to marry Liang Fu off so soon.
Liang Fu is still two months away from turning eighteen. In later generations, there are plenty of people who are still unmarried at twenty-eight or twenty-nine, and no one thinks it's a big deal.
His thinking was naturally not as rigid as people's today; he believed that one could only get married if they found someone they liked.
Although he and Liang Mei married young, they loved each other, which already put them ahead of most people of that era.
“Okay, it’s settled then.” Lin Chaosheng picked up his chopsticks and smiled, “I’ll tell Mom about this when I go to pick her up to pick up the cured meat later.”
"Okay, let's eat now!"
After finishing their business, the three of them finally focused on having dinner.
Lin Chaosheng devoured the food in a flash, finishing not only all the rice and steamed buns, but even wiping away the oil stains on the plates with his steamed buns.
“Let my sister and I pack these things up,” Liang Mei stopped Lin Chaosheng from tidying up the table. “You should go to your parents’ house quickly.”
"Alright, then thank you for your hard work, my dear wife."
Lin Chaosheng said with a grin, then pulled Liang Mei over and kissed her on the lips.
Liang Fu happened to see this scene and quickly turned around, saying, "Oh dear, sister and brother-in-law! There's a living person here, can you please be more careful!"
Liang Mei playfully slapped Lin Chaosheng's shoulder, and Lin Chaosheng smiled and turned to leave the kitchen.
Along the way, many people greeted Lin Chaosheng. Before, he was a nobody, and wherever he went, there was no one around. But now, he's become a hot commodity, and everyone who sees him flocks to him.
Many people also asked him when he would go hunting in the mountains next time.
"Chaosheng? When are you going to take people up the mountain to hunt again?"
"Yeah, remember to call me then, okay? With all these muscles, I can shield you from danger!"
"The tide rises..."
Grandma Wei, leaning on a cane, walked over shakily. Lin Chaosheng was frightened by her appearance; those two steps she took looked like she was about to fall apart.
Lin Chaosheng looked at Grandma Wei with a complicated expression and asked, "Grandma Wei, you're not going to come hunting with me in the mountains, are you?"
The people around him burst into laughter, and Lin Chaosheng smiled as well.
Grandma Wei knew he was joking, and laughed, "My old bones will fall apart before we even get to the mountain! What I meant was, next time you go hunting in the mountains or fishing in the sea, take my little grandson with you. He's not young anymore, it's time to let him see the world."
Lin Chaosheng looked at the boy who was being pushed out by Grandma Wei. He remembered this child.
His name is Wei He. If I remember correctly, he's about 16 years old, about half a head older than her, just a bit thinner.
But that's normal; there are no fat people in those famine years, it's good enough if they don't starve to death.
Grandma Wei's son took his wife out to find a way out. They left when Wei He was seven years old, and almost ten years have passed since then.
Not to mention whether the couple returned or not, they didn't even send letters back until the first two years. For the past seven years, there has been no news of them, and many people have guessed that the couple died abroad.
Poor Grandma Wei, an old woman raising her young grandson all by herself, I don't know how she survived those years of famine.
But while others may not know, Lin Chaosheng does.
Not only did the Wei couple not die, they actually made a fortune outside!
The reason for the lack of news for seven years was that he lost the mailing address and was not very literate. Every time he mailed a letter, he would misspell a word, and no one would point it out to him.
So every time they went to the post office to mail a letter, they thought it had been sent. However, because their island was remote, many newly hired post office employees thought there was no such place, so they would take the letter out and leave it there, eventually forgetting about it altogether.
It was a huge misunderstanding.
When the young couple found out, they rushed back, but Grandma Wei had just passed away and Wei He was only seventeen years old. He didn't believe his parents' explanations and was unwilling to go back with them to enjoy their retirement.
Lin Chaosheng shook his head regretfully as he thought about the family's fate.
"Brother Chaosheng, although I'm skinny, I'm smart, I can help you!"
Seeing Lin Chaosheng shake his head, Wei He assumed that Lin did not want to take him hunting in the mountains or fishing in the sea, so he quickly tried to secure an opportunity for himself.
After all, if they didn't try, he and his grandmother would really starve to death.
"I didn't say I wouldn't take you. Come to my house after dark."
Lin Chaosheng patted Wei He's head and smiled as he continued walking towards his parents' house.
Upon hearing this, Grandma Wei immediately hugged Wei He, her eyes moist as she murmured, "That's good! Your brother Chaosheng is willing to take you with him! We, grandmother and grandson, won't starve to death. This time, we really won't starve to death..."
Watching Lin Chaosheng's departing figure, Wei He made up his mind that the first person he would repay when he made money in the future was Brother Chaosheng.
Lin Chaosheng had no idea that his unintentional act today had planted a seed that would bring him tremendous surprise and assistance in the future.
As he reached the courtyard gate, Zhao Shufen came out of the main room. Upon seeing Lin Chaosheng, she smiled and said, "Didn't I say I didn't need you to come and pick me up? It's not like I don't know the way!"
“Then I’ll come too, and I also have something to discuss with you.”
Upon hearing this, Lin Shanhai poked his head out from the doorway and asked, "What's up? Need money?"
"You old geezer, you've eaten your fill and now you spew filth from your mouth!"
Zhao Shufen turned and scolded Lin Shanhai. Lin Chaosheng was both amused and exasperated when he heard this, and said, "It's not about borrowing money, it's a great thing."
“I plan to demolish my old house and rebuild a big courtyard. Then I’ll bring you, Dad, and Shansheng to live there. That way, our whole family can live together and be together as a family.”
Lin Chaosheng's words stunned the other three. Lin Shansheng asked with a silly grin, "Then what about this courtyard?"
