Chapter 2: Ice and Snow Siege

"Little master, why are you always staring at the snow? What's so good about it? You can see it every year!" I heard the voice of our supervisor Linda from behind. When I turned around, I saw a thick fur in Linda's hand.

Letting Linda wrap him up like a zongzi, Lin Xingchen said to Linda: "Aunt Linda, don't you think the snow is so beautiful?"

"My little master, no matter how beautiful the scenery is, you will never get tired of it. I hope it won't snow so heavily."

"Why? Isn't it good to have snow? When the snow melts, it will freeze all the insects in the ground to death, so we can have a good harvest next year!"

"Young master, putting aside whether the insects can be frozen to death, many of our people in the territory may not survive this winter." Linda's tone was somewhat melancholy.

"If they can't survive the winter, why doesn't Grandpa help them?"

"The Duke has also sent people to help them, but our Maple Leaf Territory is too poor, and the King is unwilling to allocate funds for disaster relief, so most of the time our assistance is limited."

"Aunt Linda, what kind of shortage of supplies do we have here? Can't we use our own supplies to help those civilians?"

"You can think of what the Duke has already thought of. However, our Maple Leaf Territory is barren and many crops have low yields. The Duke has already taken out all the supplies that can be taken out. The remaining supplies are those that we and the army must keep."

"So what we lack is food?"

"Well, warm clothes and firewood are easy to get. There isn't much else in Maple Leaf Territory, but maple trees are everywhere. The Duke relaxes the logging restrictions every year, allowing civilians to go up the mountain to cut wood for the winter. As for clothes, they can only rely on hunting themselves."

"Aunt Linda, do you know how many people there are in our territory?"

"Why is the young master asking this?" Linda was puzzled.

"Don't worry about it. Just tell me if you know how many people there are in our territory."

"I guess only the Duke and the Butler know this number." Linda answered as she was told.

"When he heard that grandpa knew the total number of people, Lin Xingchen ran to the hall in a flash."

"Little master, please slow down, be careful not to fall!" Linda hurriedly chased after him, holding up her skirt.

"Grandpa, Grandpa, I have something to talk to you about." Seeing Green reading a book by the fireplace in the hall, Lin Xingchen called from a distance.

Green was leaning on a chair covered with bear skin. When he heard his grandson's words, he sat up straight.

"Xiao Xingchen, what do you want to talk to grandpa about?"

"Grandpa, I heard that only you and Grandpa Arnold know how many people there are in our Maple Leaf Territory, right?"

"Why are you asking this? Only the lord is qualified to know how many people there are in the territory."

"That's right, Grandpa. I heard that many civilians in our Maple Leaf Territory can't survive this winter, so I want to do something to help them. They are the people of our territory, and if we help them, we are helping ourselves."

"Who taught you these words?" He turned and looked at the servants led by Linda.

"Master, we didn't teach the little master to say these words. He thought of them himself." Linda said, standing out from the crowd.

"real?"

"I dare not deceive my master about this matter!" Linda's answer made Green feel somewhat relieved.

"Little Xingchen, how are you going to help those civilians?" Green, who was facing his grandson, had a different tone and expression.

"Grandpa, I plan to gather together those who can't survive this winter, and then we will give them some food and clothes to help them get through this winter."

"Xiao Xingchen! You know if we help them like this, we may not have anything to eat!"

"Grandpa, it's okay. I have a way to fill my stomach. Can you just let me try?" Not wanting to dwell on this matter too much, Lin Xingchen pinched his nose and acted coquettishly to the old man.

Green quickly surrendered under this sugar-coated bullet and arranged a 20-man guard team to protect him. He also took his supervisor Linda away at Lin Xingchen's request.

After hearing the news from Linda and the guards, Lin Xingchen did not rush to provide disaster relief but instead asked people to find many carpenters.

Based on Lin Xingchen's own narration and some simple drawings, those skilled carpenters made the steamer and stove that Lin Xingchen needed.

After all the tools were ready, Lin Xingchen began to direct the burly cooks to knead the dough.

I can’t find old dough and baking soda, but fortunately there is still wine yeast which can also serve the purpose of leaving dough.

The work of fermenting the dough started with the steamer. The carpenters spent two days on it, and the cook also made the flour that Lin Xingchen brought out into old dough.

The scene of steaming buns was so spectacular that everyone who had free time in the Duke's Castle was attracted to come over.

Whenever the steamer was opened, the aroma of steamed buns made people around swallow their saliva. Green led Arnold to watch from the side. As the steamers were opened one by one, Green could not help but drool.

There were eight steamed buns stacked on the silver plate, which Linda brought to Green.

"Grandpa, this thing is called steamed bun. A teacher I met taught me how to make it. You can try it first!" Lin Xingchen was looking forward to Green trying a bite of the steamed bun that appeared for the first time in the world.

Seeing Green hesitate, Lin Xingchen finally realized what his cheap grandfather was hesitating about.

Reaching out and taking the tallest steamed bun on the plate, Lin Xingchen almost shed tears at the sweet and soft texture he took a bite of.

When Green saw Lin Xingchen reaching out his hand, he quickly stopped him. After all, they usually stayed away from things of unknown origin.

Unfortunately, Lin Xingchen’s hand speed was too fast and neither of them paid attention, so the first bite of steamed bun from the other world still went into Lin Xingchen’s mouth.

As Lin Xingchen started eating, Green and Arnold also started eating in turn.

The scene afterwards was extremely chaotic. Under Lin Xingchen's command, everyone in Duke Castle was given two steamed buns as big as an adult's fist.

After receiving unanimous praise from everyone who tasted it, Lin Xingchen began to make large quantities of steamed buns with leavened dough. These were the main food for disaster relief, and were easy to preserve in the winter, and only needed to be soaked in boiling water to fill one up.

In the winter when food is scarce, filling your stomach is the first priority, and whether it tastes good or not is secondary.

Lin Xingchen continuously provided flour, and the flavors and colors of the steamed buns increased. As a result, more and more poor people came to collect food.

Everyone who comes to receive steamed buns will report the number of people in his or her family and whether any family members have any special skills.

The reason for recording these things has to do with what Green told him about the population of the entire Maple Leaf Territory. It was this incident that made Lin Xingchen think of re-organizing the household statistics himself.

The answer Green told Lin Xingchen was so concise that it was frightening. There were about 80,000 people in the entire Maple Leaf Territory. Green himself couldn't tell exactly how many 80,000 it was, and he had no idea about the gender ratio or family members.

The reason why we have this number is because we collect taxes every year, so we can know this approximate number, but we don’t have any more detailed information.

This was quite difficult for Lin Xingchen, who was born in a flower-growing family. Naturally, he also used the concise and clear demographic statistics of one household registration book for each family in Maple Leaf Territory.

Although not everyone came to receive the steamed buns, Lin Xingchen still followed the principle of starting with the task first and then slowly arranging the arrangements for those who were hungry.

As winter was halfway through, those who had almost used up their stored food also came out to collect the steamed buns.

After nearly two months of trial and error, the entire disaster relief process has become very smooth. Not only can people receive steamed buns according to their household registration, but they can also receive boiled rice porridge.

Looking at the scene of people lining up to receive steamed buns and rice porridge in the greenhouse, Lin Xingchen opened his mouth wide and took a bite of the obviously specially made steamed bun. The taste of honey and sugar wafted in his mouth. After swallowing, Lin Xingchen drank another mouthful of rice porridge. Green on the opposite side was also eating with relish.

After finishing their breakfast, the grandparents and grandchildren sat in front of the fireplace to digest their food.

Linda placed some fruits and hot tea in front of the fireplace and sat aside, ready to be dispatched at any time.

"Xiao Xingchen! There are only four of us here. Tell me honestly, how much flour is left in your space ring? Is it enough for those people outside to eat until spring?"

While eating the orange peeled by Linda, Lin Xingchen replied with a smile: "Grandpa, I thought you would ask me this question after a while."

"Hehe... the little guy actually started to plot against grandpa! Grandpa won't ask where you got all the flour, I just ask how long can you hold on?" As he grows older, he becomes more shrewd and clever. Green is not the kind of country rich man who knows nothing.

"Grandpa, don't worry! I've calculated that as long as the number of people doesn't increase by half, I can still hold out for another month and a half. By that time, the ice and snow will begin to melt, and then we'll have to prepare for the spring!"

"At the beginning of spring? Little Xingchen, you don't know the situation in our Maple Leaf Territory. Other crops are difficult to grow. Even if they are grown, the yield is about half less than that of other places." When Green said this, the resentment in his tone could no longer be concealed.

"Grandpa, do you know why we can't grow anything else in our territory?" Lin Xingchen had wanted to ask this for a long time, but he never found the opportunity.

"I don't really know the truth about this, but the most widely circulated legend is that our Maple Leaf Territory is a place cursed by the gods."

"A land cursed by the gods, what does that mean?" Lin Xingchen felt like laughing, but he held it back before laughing. After all, he could be an atheist before, but now that he has traveled through time and space here, it is hard to explain.
