Chapter 33: Finding a traitor

After all, it was his own bed, and he slept comfortably. Fang Lang slept until noon before getting up. This might be due to the fact that he had not slept well on the boat.

When Fang Lang finished washing up and went downstairs for breakfast, he found that only his mother Yang Xiuer was left at home. Everyone else was not at home, not even his grandfather. He didn't know what he was busy with. Fang Lang didn't care. He prepared to have a leisurely breakfast and then go to the telegraph office to send a telegram to the United States and Italy to inquire about the company's current situation.

According to Fang Lang's estimation, Italy should have received the second or even third batch of cigarettes from the United States. I don't know what the current income situation is.

While Fang Lang was still enjoying the business situation on the other side of the ocean, Captain Blackwell came to visit with Director Hodges. This was an appointment made yesterday, so Fang Lang stood up to greet them without any surprise.

After being introduced by Captain Blackwell, Fang Lang gave Chief Hodges a warm hug and invited him to sit down at his home.

"Fang, there is something I must tell you. Last night we took action against the Black Dragon Society in the Japanese community!" Captain Blackwell said solemnly.

Fang Lang was shocked. What's going on? The Black Dragon Society? Is that the Black Dragon Society I know? He said calmly, "Oh! Thank you! You are so kind, brother. I don't know how to thank you."

"It's nothing. I was just following Colonel Teach's orders, but we discovered some other situations!" Captain Blackwell's eyes gleamed with excitement.

"Other situations?" Fang Lang's heart moved. It couldn't be such a coincidence! It would be interesting if the Black Dragon Society in Brazil was also engaged in espionage activities like in the motherland. But even if Fang Lang had an idea in his mind, he couldn't say it out loud. What if it wasn't about this? Wouldn't it be embarrassing to say it out loud?

...

...

"Yes, let Chief Hodges explain this to you! He is the person involved." Captain Blackwell pointed at Chief Hodges.

"Lieutenant Fang, although this is the first time we meet, you have given me a big gift this time. I must thank you very much!" Director Hodges laughed.

"Oh! Director Hodges, I haven't given you any gifts! Even if you received something, it must be a treasure you discovered yourself, right!" It was obvious from the tone of the two people that it must be a good thing, but Fang Lang did not want to share any credit with them. It was better to keep a low profile now.

Hodges and Blackwell smiled at each other. Director Hodges laughed and said, "Okay! Even if I found it myself, I will definitely have a gift for you when the time comes. Haha..."

Captain Blackwell also spoke up, "Fang may not care much about such a small matter, so Mr. Director, don't keep it a secret any longer. You should tell him quickly and make Fang happy."

"Haha... Last night when we raided the Black Dragon Society's headquarters, we accidentally discovered that the Black Dragon Society was actually a spy organization. Unfortunately, they bribed our police officers, so we were unable to catch them all, and two of their leaders escaped."

Fang Lang heard it, and it was indeed the case. It seemed that the Black Dragon Society was a gangster in public, but secretly a spy for the Japanese government! Fang Lang was not surprised that the Japanese could bribe the police. This kind of infiltration was seen too often in TV and movies in later generations.

"How could these Japanese be spies? Damn it, have the two escaped Japanese been found?" Fang Lang said in surprise.

"Fang, don't worry! These two Japanese can't escape. The São Paulo City Government is now offering a reward of 5,000 US dollars for these two Japanese spies. The streets are now full of their photos. Believe me, they can't get away." Director Hodges seemed very confident. He believed in the charm of money. With everyone in São Paulo looking for them, no one could escape.

Fang Lang felt that Director Hodges obviously underestimated the difference between professional spies and ordinary citizens. Fang Lang was almost certain that it would not be so easy for Director Hodges to catch these two Japanese spies. But he certainly couldn't say that. It seemed that he had to remind his compatriots that there were only so many Asians in St. Paul. Now the Japanese would definitely be the focus of attention. Who knows, these two Japanese would disguise themselves as Chinese and hide among the Chinese.

"Then congratulate Chief Hodges in advance and hope that these two fish that slipped through the net can be caught as soon as possible." He also saluted. The two looked at Fang Lang's actions and were stunned. They didn't quite understand what he meant, but Chief Hodges still understood what Fang Lang said.

"Haha... these are just a piece of cake. What's bothering me now is that the mayor asked me to find the person who tipped off the Japanese within two days. These damn spies are really abominable. We have no experience in counterintelligence and have no idea where to start."

Director Hodges looked confident at first, but when he talked about the spy among his own people, he looked troubled. It was obvious that he had no idea how to catch the spy hidden among his own people.

Fang Lang thought, doesn't Brazil have its own intelligence agency? Why would your police station need to investigate this matter? But Fang Lang thought about the unknown Brazilian intelligence agency in later generations, and he had a clue in his heart. It is estimated that the current Brazilian intelligence agency may not be established! Even if it is established, it is estimated that it is not much different from the police. It is hard to describe.

Thinking about the many spy TV shows, movies, and novels I have watched, I wanted to see if I could help Chief Hodges. If I could, I might be able to gain a close friend.

"We Chinese have an old saying, 'Three cobblers are better than one Zhuge Liang?' Why don't you tell me what happened at that time? Captain Blackwell and I will help you think of a solution!"

"A cobbler? Zhuge Liang? What is this?" Both of them had black question mark faces.

"Don't worry about this. It's too troublesome to introduce it. Just tell us about the situation at that time and we will help you think about the idea together." Fang Lang also had a dark face. What Chinese proverbs were he talking about with two foreigners?

Hodges did not hide anything and gave a detailed account of the situation at the scene! Fang Lang and Captain Blackwell listened quietly and began to think.

"What you mean is that when you arrived at the scene, the enemy didn't notice it, and it was only within 5 minutes after the mission was assigned that the lights in the enemy's room lit up one by one, right?" Fang Lang spoke first.

"That's right!" Hodges remembered this very clearly.

"Are you sure you didn't tell anyone else about the mission objective before arriving at the scene?"

“That’s right!”

"Then first of all, we can confirm that the spy is among the people you have on the scene, right?"

"Why?" Hodges asked puzzledly.

Blackwell also looked at Fang Lang curiously. This made Fang Lang unable to complain. Was it necessary for him to explain such a simple reasoning himself?

"Because the enemy only discovered you five minutes before your operation! Others didn't know the mission target and had no way to warn you!"

"Yes! That makes sense, I understand!" Director Hodges slapped his forehead.

Seeing that Fang Lang did not continue speaking, Director Hodges asked again: "And then?"

Fang Lang looked at Chief Hodges, who looked anxious, and thought he already knew who it was! But he asked, "And then?"

"There are only so many of you at the scene. You can check who had the opportunity to leave alone to report the news. Or find out how the Japanese received the information. Then you can find out who notified them, right?" Captain Blackwell interrupted.

After hearing Blackwell's words, Chief Hodges fell into deep thought, carefully recalling the situation at the time. This sentence, "Who has the opportunity to leave alone?", directly helped him lock his target on his secretary.

Because he remembered that his secretary had advised him not to attack the Japanese after arranging the task, saying that the Japanese had given him many benefits. After he refused, he seemed to say he was going to do something and left for a while.

Now that I think about it, he must have gone to tip off the Japanese. As for how the Japanese received the information, there is no need to investigate, because the Japanese were surrounded by heavy enemy forces, and it was impossible for anyone to rush in to tip off. It could only be outside, and only the telephone could notify the other party. Then we can check with the telephone bureau and we will know. Thinking of this, Director Hodges stood up suddenly.

"Fang, I think I know who it is. I'm going to go back and catch him now! I'll visit you again after I'm done!"

Obviously, Chief Hodges was not stupid. He just had never encountered such an espionage case and had no direction to handle the case. After being reminded by the two people, he immediately thought of who was the most suspicious.
