Chapter 4 The Responsibilities of a Mother

Ni Fang, who had just looked at her like an enemy, suddenly felt guilty.

But then she realized why Lin Wei had become so difficult to deal with; it turned out she had a problem with her.

“Weiwei, is it because I’m angry that you said such hurtful things? It’s all my fault. But Weiwei, I just feel that your father’s death was too sudden and I haven’t been able to process it yet. Besides, it has nothing to do with your uncle. What you just did was really rude.”

Ni Qingguo, always quick to read the room, understood the implication in Ni Fang's words and immediately echoed her:

"Isn't this a misunderstanding? Weiwei, it's not that your mother isn't sad, she's just numb with heartache. Your uncle is the same. He was perfectly fine this morning, and then he just disappeared. Everyone was just too shocked to react."

"Besides, your father is already dead, so we have to face reality. Just like this boss said, if you accept this compensation, the three of you will have a much better life from now on."

Ni Fang nodded repeatedly, "Don't you still want to go to university? With this money, we can pay your tuition. Mom agrees to let you go to university."

Seeing Ni Fang's serious expression, Lin Wei found it amusing.

Her mother is actually giving her charity?

But when she thought back to her past life, under Ni Qingguo's instigation, Ni Fang threatened suicide and actually prevented her from going to university. In fact, with Ni Qingguo's cooperation, they even sold her student status to someone else.

She should have had a brilliant life, but because of Ni Fang, she spent her days aimlessly searching for her younger brother, and ultimately achieved nothing.

It would be a lie to say she didn't hate him; otherwise, she wouldn't have almost stopped contacting Ni Fang after her brother went missing.

Looking back now, Ni Fang probably didn't really want to contact her, otherwise she would have discovered their affair much earlier.

Seeing that Lin Wei remained silent for a long time, Ni Qingguo, who was already short-tempered, became annoyed. "What are you still hesitating about? This compensation was originally for your mother. What does it have to do with you whether your mother accepts it or not?"

"Then you should accept it. Why are you asking me here?"

“Isn’t it because I’m afraid you’ll cause trouble? We’ve been neighbors for decades. If we make a scene, it’ll look bad. We still have to live in this area.” Ni Qingguo said, “Actually, all you’re worried about is not being able to go to school. I’ve never seen a daughter as selfish as you.”

“So what if I’m selfish? Do you think others don’t know what you’re scheming about by staying here? If you just take this 30,000 yuan, will you share even a penny with me? I’m afraid the money will all be in your hands as soon as this boss leaves. Do you think you can let me go to university then? That’s a joke.”

"I'm telling you this: if I don't get it, nobody else will get the money."

'smack'

Ni Fang reached out to hit Lin Wei, but Lin Wei slapped Ni Fang's hand back.

"Mom, you want to hit me right after Dad died? Are you even my real mother?"

Ni Fang was also surprised that Lin Wei dared to fight back, and her anger rose even higher. "You are simply outrageous. With your quality, you still want to go to university? Don't even dream about it."

"See, now you're telling the truth. I knew that's what you were thinking. You never intended for me to go to university. Since that's the case, sir, we don't want the compensation. Please take the money back. I'm my father's biological daughter, and I can make decisions for him."

"No, no, my ancestor!" Ni Qingguo was so anxious he almost jumped up and down. "That's 30,000 yuan! You're just going to say you don't want it? Have you lost your mind?"

The living room was in complete chaos, and Xiao Yuanbing, suppressing his impatience, repeatedly interrupted them.

"Alright, alright, stop arguing, stop arguing."

"Actually, all your arguing is still about the same thing. If the girl wants to go to university, then let her go. It's not a big deal."

Ni Qingguo frowned and explained, "It's not a matter of whether or not she can go to school. My sister hasn't worked since she married into the Lin family. This whole family relies on my brother-in-law to earn money to support them. If Lin Wei goes to school, not to mention the family's food and drink, someone has to earn money to support the family. And Lin Yuan also needs someone to take care of him. My sister doesn't know anything. If Weiwei doesn't take care of her, my sister simply can't manage her."

Lin Wei couldn't help but scoff, "Dear Uncle, do you even understand what you're saying? Aren't you afraid my mother will be laughed at for saying such things?"

"But I think I understand what you mean."

"I will never back down from university. If you don't let me study there, everyone in the surrounding area will know that you threatened me. I will let them drown you in their spittle."

“My only concession is to take Lin Yuan away. All you’ve been saying is that you’re worried Lin Yuan will become a burden to my mother. I will raise Lin Yuan. I don’t want a single penny of that 30,000 yuan, but she must give me her first year of university tuition and living expenses for the first semester. This is the responsibility a mother should fulfill.”

"If you agree, we can put it in writing on the spot and have a neighbor witness it. I'm worried you might change your mind later. If you don't agree, then it's the same as before, and we have nothing to talk about."

Lin Wei threatened, "You can accept this 30,000 yuan behind my back, but if I find out, I will make you suffer forever, no matter where you are, unless I die. I mean what I say."

Ni Fang clenched her fists at her sides, wishing she could punch this unfilial daughter to death.

"You... this is outrageous! Do you even consider me your mother? It's true what they say, children are always there to collect debts. You and your brother are both here to collect debts from me."

Unlike Ni Fang, who was furious, Ni Qingguo was overjoyed to hear Lin Wei's words.

"Sis, why are you angry? It's a good thing that Lin Wei is willing to take on the responsibility of taking care of Lin Yuan. You're still young. Are you going to live with your brother-in-law alone from now on? But these two kids are at a time when they cost money. If we find someone else to take care of these two burdens, won't people have objections in the long run?"

Ni Fang was taken aback by what she was told.

Yes, although she was unwilling to spend money on the children, she never considered abandoning them.

But if we were to find another one, it wouldn't be so suitable to have two children in tow.

Almost instinctively, Ni Fang looked in Xiao Yuanbing's direction.

Xiao Yuanbing turned his face away awkwardly, but his meaning was clear: he was tacitly agreeing with Ni Qingguo's statement.

Once Ni Fang understood, her anger dissipated almost instantly.

She pretended to accuse Ni Qingguo and said, "What nonsense are you talking about? The children's father just left, how can I have the mind to find someone else? I don't think these two children are a burden, but am I going to be left alone at home from now on?"

“That’s easy, sis. Why don’t you move in with me? That room has been empty since Mom passed away. If it stays empty any longer, it might become a storage room. If you move in with us, it will make the house more lively.”
