Was Chapter 2 really just an accident?

Lin Wei looked around in horror.

The worry in the workers' eyes seemed genuine.

He showed no sign of guilt when he saw her sharp gaze.

People in the 1990s were mostly simple and honest. If they were the ones who committed the crime, they probably wouldn't have been able to remain so calm and composed as they spoke face-to-face with the victim's relatives in such a short time.

Did you call the police?

Her coworkers were completely bewildered. "Weiwei, why are you calling the police? Your dad fell accidentally. We all saw it. We can't be worried something might have happened."

"You wouldn't suspect that your father's death wasn't an accident, but that we did it, would you?"

Lin Wei shook her head. "My uncles and aunts watched me grow up. We neighbors sometimes bicker, but it wouldn't come to such a cruel thing. But my father is dead, and I need to know how he died."

"It's just a fall from a height, what other way could someone die?"

Lin Wei, fighting back tears, explained, "There are many ways to die from falling from a height. Shouldn't we investigate whether it was an accidental fall or a safety hazard at the construction site?"

"I'm not cursing you uncles and aunts, but if there really is a safety problem at the construction site, and the cause isn't found and resolved, this time it's my family's fault, but next time, who knows whose family it might be."

After listening to Lin Wei's words, Uncle Liu, who lived next door, also felt that they made a lot of sense.

"Yes, safety ropes are usually used for high-altitude construction. Everyone here has a family and wouldn't risk their life. If there are safety issues during construction, it's definitely something that should be investigated."

Uncle Liu's words were loaded with meaning, and Lin Wei immediately understood.

Although they understood, no one took any action.

Because if the police are called, it will be difficult to explain to the contractor, and if there is indeed a safety hazard at the construction site, the project may be suspended.

If they have no work, what will they eat with so many people in their families?

But Lin Wei has never been one to expect others to stand up for her.

She wiped away her tears, stood up from the ground, and turned to go to the police station.

Just then, a man darted out from a short distance and stopped her.

"Girl, don't call the police, don't call the police."

Lin Wei took a few steps back warily and asked in a cold voice, "Who are you? Why are you stopping me from calling the police? Did you push my dad off a high place?"

"No, no, I never went up there at all, how could it be me?" the man quickly explained. "I'm the person in charge of the construction site, my surname is Li, and the foreman sent me here to supervise the work. Ask them, they all know me."

Uncle Liu nodded quickly, "Yes, Engineer Li is the site manager, and he is fully responsible for everything on the site."

"So what? Why can't we call the police?"

“Girl, your dad’s death was really an accident. We all saw it. It’s most likely a safety issue at the construction site. But if you call the police, the construction will stop and the project won’t be able to get off work. How many people will go hungry?”

“What does this have to do with me? As his daughter, I should seek justice for my father.”

Lin Wei pushed Li Gong away and quickly ran towards the police station.

Seeing that he couldn't stop him, Li gritted his teeth and ran in another direction.

-

Just as Lin Wei was about to arrive at the police station, her mother suddenly darted out from a side path and blocked her way.

"Weiwei, what are you doing?"

Seeing Lin's mother's panicked face, fragments of her previous life before her death surfaced in her mind one by one.

She took a step back in disgust, but thinking that those things had not yet happened and fearing that something might go wrong, Lin Wei said with a mournful face, "Mom, Dad is dead. When I went to find Dad, he fell from a great height and died."

"Mom knows. My coworker just told me what you're going to do now."

“Call the police! Dad died under mysterious circumstances, of course I have to call the police and let them find out the truth. Mom, let’s go together.”

Lin Wei took her mother's arm and, ignoring her struggles, dragged her into the police station.

Regardless of what the people inside were doing, Lin Wei cried out and told them everything.

"Police officer, I need to report a crime. My dad is dead. He fell from a high school construction site and died. But they should have had safety ropes when they were working at heights. My dad still fell and died."

Lin's mother was powerless to stop her. She shook off Lin Wei's hand and was about to explain.

But it was too late—

Upon hearing Lin Wei's accusation, the police officer immediately put down his work and asked:

"Little sister, are you telling the truth?"

“Yes, the workers at the construction site said my dad died in an accidental fall, just now. When I got there, his body was already cold. His death was so tragic. Police officers, you must find out the truth about my dad’s death.”

The police officer frowned, sensing something was off about her words.

Then he looked at the adult beside him.

"And you are?"

“I’m her mother. I just received the news that my husband fell to his death at the construction site. I hadn’t even arrived there yet when my daughter dragged me here. I don’t know what happened.”

After a brief discussion, two of the police officers, having gathered their tools, said to them, "Let's go, take us there and see."

Not a moment was wasted.

They immediately returned to the construction site.

Lin's mother, who was following behind them, couldn't hide the malice in her eyes that she wanted to kill Lin Wei.

-

When they returned, the workers were still gathered around Lin's father's body and had not left. Li, who had gone in the opposite direction, had also returned and stayed with them.

When the police officers approached, Mr. Li politely offered them two cigarettes.

"Hello, police officer."

The police officer refused to speak, then pointed to Lin Wei behind him, saying, "This young girl reported that her father fell from a great height and died on the spot. We came to check on the situation."
