Chapter Sixty-Six: Soon

Quite a few people came to help the old man. No matter what, everyone in this courtyard respected him, and they were all willing to help him with anything that happened at home. Li Chu went inside to tell the old man, and then came out to the courtyard gate to chat with Jia Dongxu.

After they had packed everything up, He Yushui and Qin Huairu helped the elderly woman out of the car and helped her sit on a makeshift cart covered with a quilt. Then He Yuzhu pulled the cart, and the rest of them followed her toward the hospital.

Upon arriving at the hospital, it turned out that Director Li was on duty in the obstetrics and gynecology department that day. Out of consideration for Li Chu, Director Li arranged an empty ward for her and said that she would try her best not to assign anyone else to the ward. There were three beds in the ward, so the person accompanying her would have a place to sleep at night.

Once everything was arranged, Li Chu and the others prepared to leave, as there were too many people and the older woman couldn't get any rest.

He Yuzhu and his sister stayed to take care of the woman. It would be more convenient for Yushui if she needed anything, and He Yuzhu could help run errands.

Li Chu, Jia Dongxu and his wife, and Uncle San walked back together. Jia Dongxu was still pulling the cart, and he would return it to Uncle San later.

As soon as they reached the hospital entrance, Qin Huairu covered her mouth and ran to the wall, retching a few times. Jia Dongxu dropped the cart and went over to Qin Huairu to pat her back.

This scene made Li Chu's heart skip a beat. Was she pregnant or had a stomach problem? If she was pregnant, then wouldn't that mean Jia Dongxu...?

After a while, the two came over, and Jia Dongxu asked Qin Huairu to sit on the cart, which he then pulled away.

Li Chu looked at Jia Dongxu and asked, "Brother Dongxu, what's this...?"

Jia Dongxu chuckled sheepishly and said, "Your sister-in-law is pregnant."

Upon hearing this, the third uncle offered his congratulations repeatedly, and Li Chu echoed his congratulations. However, his heart was in turmoil. Li Chu did not know exactly when Jia Dongxu died, but according to those fan fiction novels, he died when Qin Huairu was pregnant with Huaihua. That meant he didn't have time left.

Li Chu glanced at Jia Dongxu with a hint of fear. Whether it was psychological or not, he felt Jia Dongxu's forehead looked somewhat dark. He carefully tried to recall how Jia Dongxu had died.

However, it seems that every book says it's different. Some say he died in an accident caused by operational error at work, some say it was caused by operational error while at work after drinking, and some say he died from illness. However, according to Li Chu's observation, Jia Dongxu should not have any serious illness. Although he had not taken Jia Dongxu's pulse, Li Chu still trusted his eyes.

So she must have died while at work. Yes, it seems that Qin Huairu and her mother-in-law went to the factory to make a scene, and then the factory gave their family compensation and agreed to let Qin Huairu take over Jia Dongxu's job at the factory after giving birth.

Li Chu didn't know the exact time, and he couldn't say anything to Jia Dongxu, otherwise he wouldn't be a traditional Chinese medicine doctor, he would become a charlatan, and he would definitely get beaten up.

Forget it, I don't want to think about it anymore. That damned brat Niu Chaotian. I'm just a doctor who wants to live my own life and help others when I'm able. But Jia Dongxu's condition is clearly beyond my capabilities now.

Then he thought that once Qin Huairu started working, the family's situation should be better than when Jia Dongxu was alive. Right now, five people in their family were eating the food rations for one person, but in the future, five people would be eating the food rations for four people.

Although Qin Huairu's salary will definitely be lower than Jia Dongxu's when she starts working, she should basically not need to buy food anymore, so she should save money. Why is her family's life worse than it is now? Oh right, if they want to eat better, they won't be able to do as well as they do now, because they don't have extra money to buy meat.

The old man is about to have his own child, and it's uncertain whether he'll still pressure He Yuzhu to take care of Qin Huairu's family. Or perhaps He Yuzhu will be willing on his own without the old man's pressure, given their family's ancestral fondness for widows.

This courtyard is probably going to get more and more lively from now on. Li Chu said he was looking forward to having some gossip to share, but he was careful not to become the gossip himself.

Lost in thought, Li Chu returned to the courtyard house. When he got home, Ding Qiunan still hadn't woken up. Li Chu checked the time and it was almost 9 o'clock. He had to go to his sister's house later, so he should wake her up.

Li Chu washed his hands, took off his coat, and then sat down on the edge of the bed. Afraid that his hands were too cold and would chill his wife, he warmed them in his own bosom for a while before putting his hands under the covers and pulling Ding Qiunan into his arms.

Ding Qiunan sensed it, opened her eyes sleepily, glanced at her man, closed her eyes again, snuggled closer to Li Chu, and asked, "What time is it, Li Chu?"

"It's almost 9 o'clock, honey, shouldn't you get up?"

Ding Qiunan's eyes widened suddenly, and she looked at Li Chu blankly: "How come it's already 9 o'clock? How come I can sleep so much?" Suddenly she thought of something, her face turned red, and she raised her hand and punched Li Chu's chest a few times: "It's all your fault, it's all because of you, it's all your fault."

"Okay, okay, it's my fault!" Li Chu smiled and hugged his wife even tighter, pulling the hand that had hit him into his embrace as well.

Ding Qiunan struggled for a moment but couldn't break free, so she headbutted him again.

"Hmph, I'm punishing you by making you put on clothes for me today," Ding Qiunan said to Li Chu in a coquettish tone.

"Really? You're punishing me by making me dress you?" Li Chu couldn't wait to confirm.

Ding Qiunan hesitated for a moment. Just a instant, she thought she saw a glint in her man's eyes. After thinking for a moment, she pulled away from Li Chu's embrace, sat on the bed, wrapped herself in the blanket, and said, "Never mind, never mind, I'll get dressed myself. You can go downstairs now, I'll be right down." She didn't dare let Li Chu help her get dressed, worried that she probably wouldn't be able to go downstairs by noon if she did.

Li Chu looked at Ding Qiunan with some resentment: "You really won't let me put it on for you? I can put it on very quickly."

"I don't believe you." Ding Qiunan thought to herself, becoming more and more convinced that she was right not to let him wear it. She waved her hand impatiently and said, "Hey, hurry up and go down, I'll be right down."

Li Chu smacked his lips and went downstairs, looking back every few steps.

The girl couldn't help but laugh at his reluctant expression.

Ding Qiunan didn't waste any time and came downstairs in no time. When she got to the living room, she saw Li Chu sitting on the sofa, staring at Xiao Hei, who was lying in its bed.

Li Chu noticed his wife coming downstairs and said, "Honey, I don't know what's wrong with Xiao Hei today. It's been listless. Did it run off to meet a female dog last night?"

Ding Qiunan rolled her eyes at her unreliable man, ignored him, and went to wash up.

Not hearing his wife speak, Li Chu didn't pay any attention. He continued to sit on the sofa watching Xiao Hei, occasionally teasing it with his foot, which annoyed Xiao Hei so much that it turned around and faced him with its backside.
