Nannan sat on a blanket on the floor, playing with toys with the two children.
Ding Qiunan and Jiang Li laid out bedding on the kang (heated brick bed) in the east wing.
Li Chu then opened the valve in the east wing of the boiler room.
Sitting in the living room, feeling the warmth of the room, Jiang Li thought to herself, "They really know how to enjoy life. No wonder they can't stay in the compound. It's probably not just a matter of food."
The house over there was so well-maintained that Jiang Li was impressed by how well they lived. But when she came here and saw this place, wow, it was incomparable.
The Spring Festival of 1965 was spent amidst heavy snowfall.
On the second day of the Lunar New Year, the snow that had been falling for nearly ten days finally stopped.
Li Chu and Ding Qiunan are on duty tomorrow. This afternoon, everyone who was supposed to leave had already left.
The two children were also taken back to the older sister's house.
That evening, Ding Qiunan nestled in her husband's arms, her little hands constantly drawing circles on his chest.
"Li Chu, I've noticed these past two days that Sixth Brother's gaze towards Jiang Li is a bit off."
"You noticed it too?"
With a whoosh, Ding Qiunan sat up from his arms.
"Who else noticed?"
The feeling of emptiness in his arms made Li Chu a little unhappy, so he pulled his wife back to him.
"We all noticed."
"Ah, you mean my sister and brother-in-law figured it out too?" Ding Qiunan asked, leaning on him and tilting her head up.
"Yeah, it's so obvious, who wouldn't notice?"
"Then why didn't you tell me?" Ding Qiunan pouted, somewhat dissatisfied.
"Hey, what's there to say? He's just a one-sided guy."
"Wait a minute, Li Chu, I remember my sister introduced a girl to Sixth Brother, didn't she?"
Stroking his wife's smooth back, Li Chu said casually, "It definitely didn't work out. I didn't ask for the specific reason."
"Tsk tsk tsk, I didn't realize Xiao Li had become so popular. He Yuzhu has his eye on her, and even Sixth Brother has his eye on her."
"Different strokes for different folks; who can say for sure? But I reckon it'll be difficult for both of them."
"Why?"
“Jiang Li has already experienced a failed marriage, and Jiang Cheng’s affair has dealt her a heavy blow. She certainly doesn’t have the mind to think about those things right now. Besides, she’s divorced, and both He Yuzhu and Sixth Brother are young and promising men. It’s no wonder she can’t trust them.”
"Haha..." Ding Qiunan burst into laughter at Li Chu's words.
"Still a young lad, huh? Goose, goose, goose..."
Well, I couldn't stop laughing, and soon tears started streaming down my face.
Li Chu helplessly raised his hand to wipe away her tears. Was it really that funny? Why was she laughing like that?
"Ouch!" After a long while, Ding Qiunan stopped, patted her husband's chest, and said, "Can you rub my stomach for me? It hurts so much. Please don't make me laugh anymore."
"I wasn't teasing you, I was just telling the truth," Li Chu muttered softly.
"What did you say?" Ding Qiunan, who had just pressed her face against his chest, immediately raised her head again.
"No, no, I didn't say anything. Just lie down."
...
On the morning of the third day of the Lunar New Year, the two rushed to the hospital. It was their shift, and they worked from nine o'clock in the morning until three o'clock in the afternoon.
There is no lunch break, but there is a time for meals.
After arriving at the clinic and cleaning up, Li Chu found himself with nothing to do.
Today, he and Director Sun are on duty together in the Traditional Chinese Medicine department.
He went to the director's office for a chat for a while, then wandered around the hospital. He had originally planned to spend the day at his wife's place, but there were two people on duty there as well, so he felt a little embarrassed and went back to the clinic.
He had only been back in the clinic for less than ten minutes when someone he never expected came to see him.
"Director Li? What brings you here during the Chinese New Year?"
That's right, it was Li Baonian, the deputy director of the steel plant, who came over. Li Chu was a little puzzled as to why he had come over today.
"Dr. Li, Happy New Year! I'm usually too busy to visit you, so I can only come today when I have some free time."
Nobody would believe that. You didn't ask around, so how could you possibly know I was on duty today?
"Please have a seat, Director Li."
Li Chu poured him a glass of water, then sat down at his desk and looked at him, asking, "Director Li, why did you come to see me today...?"
Factory Director Li smiled, thought for a moment, and said, "It's like this, Dr. Li, I wanted to ask, is the medicine you prescribed for me meant for only me to take?"
Li Chu was taken aback by his question. After thinking about it carefully, he nodded and said, "That's right. Traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions are all individualized. What's wrong, Director Li?"
Before Li Baonian could speak, Li Chu suddenly realized: "Director Li, you didn't give that medicine to someone else, did you?"
"Don't call me Director Li anymore. Just call me Brother Li because of my relationship with Ziwen."
After saying that, Li Baonian added, "I thought this tonic was harmless, so I let my father-in-law drink it once, and then..."
Li Chu smiled slightly: "Brother Li... it's precisely because it's a tonic that I dare not drink it casually. But it shouldn't be a big problem. If an older person drinks it, they'll probably just have diarrhea for a couple of days at most."
"That's why I say Dr. Li, your medical skills are truly superb. It's amazing, just like seeing it with my own eyes," Li Baonian praised, giving a thumbs up.
Li Chu was both amused and exasperated by his praise. He knew he had to be aware of the consequences if someone accidentally drank the medicine he prescribed.
"Brother Li, it's not a big problem if you drink a little, but we can't let you drink any more later."
“He only drank it that one time, and I never dared to let him drink it again. Dr. Li, I came here today to see if you could come to my father-in-law’s house to treat his health.”
beqege.
No wonder he came here today; Li Baonian's father-in-law, Li Chu, had heard about him from his brother-in-law.
He was considered a high-ranking official, and Li Baonian was able to rise to that position thanks to his father-in-law.
After thinking for a moment, Li Chu said, "Brother Li, I can help the old man with his health, but I might not be able to today. I have to work today and can't get away."
Hearing that Li Chu had agreed, Li Baonian secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
He knew perfectly well about Dr. Li's background; his father-in-law had inquired about it beforehand.
It was only because Wang Ziwen was so kind to him that she was willing to treat his health. He was still quite nervous when he came to ask her for help.
Fortunately, Dr. Li was kind enough to let him make the trip, so it wasn't a wasted trip.
"Thank you, Dr. Li. I definitely can't let you skip work today. How about tomorrow afternoon?"
I'm officially starting work tomorrow, so going in the afternoon isn't out of the question. Since I've already agreed, I should finish this early.
"Okay, Brother Li, you can pick me up tomorrow afternoon."
Li Chu did not want to offend Li Baonian, nor was there any need for him to do so.
If things go as they've portrayed on TV, he'll oust Director Yang of the steel mill as soon as the political climate changes next year, and then successfully take over for himself.
This is no ordinary skill. You know, it's easy to get someone down next year, but to get yourself promoted at the same time is no easy task.
