Chapter 1

Sunday, April 17

Li Chu woke up very early, glanced at the alarm clock on the bedside table—it was only a little past five. There was nothing he could do; in this day and age, there was no entertainment at night, so everyone had to go to bed early. The reason every family had so many children was because they had too much free time.

Li Chu remained in bed, not getting up; he was off work today and didn't need to get up so early. He had been in this era for two years. He was now an attending physician in the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Peking Union Medical College Hospital in the capital.

To be precise, his soul arrived here two years ago. Yes, quite inexplicably, his soul transmigrated and took over this body. As for where the original soul went, Li Chu didn't know, but it was probably swallowed up, because when he transmigrated, he suddenly had the memories of this body in his mind.

Fortunately, when he transmigrated, he was given a standard cheat code for transmigrators: a daily check-in system and a portable storage space. Otherwise, Li Chu really didn't know if he could have survived in this era. The storage space allowed him to store and retrieve items, and the check-in system allowed him to check in once a day. When he first transmigrated, the check-in system gave him knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture skills. Subsequent daily check-ins gave him money, various coupons, pork, milk powder, and even some large and small yellow croakers—basically, things useful in this era.

The house he lives in now is left by his parents. It's a three-courtyard siheyuan (traditional courtyard house) with two adjacent rooms in the front yard, totaling over 60 square meters. The main room is at the entrance, and the bedroom is in the room on the left.

A sudden knocking sound startled Li Chu from her reverie. She wondered to herself, "Who is it so early?" As she dressed, she called out, "Coming, coming!"

When I opened the door, I saw an old man from the Intermediate People's Court. I asked, "Uncle, what brings you here so early in the morning?"

An old man outside the door said, "Excuse me, Dr. Li, I'm sorry to disturb your rest. The old lady in the backyard has started hurting her legs again this morning and can't walk. Could you please give her another acupuncture treatment?"

Upon hearing this, Li Chu replied, "Alright, sir, you go ahead first, I'll wash my face and come right away."

The old man nodded and said, "Okay, then I'll trouble you, Dr. Li." After saying that, he walked towards the backyard.

Li Chu didn't waste any time and grabbed his toiletries before heading into the courtyard to wash up. The tap was in the yard; it felt inconvenient at first, but he'd gotten used to it over the past two years. The more accustomed he became to this lifestyle, the more uneasy he felt. Because many characters from movies and TV shows he'd seen or heard of were appearing around him. It was as if the courtyard he was living in was the same one from the TV series "Love in the Courtyard."

Aside from him, the only other person living there was a main or supporting character from a TV series. There was also a machine repair branch factory in the north of the city located below the steel plant where they worked, and the cook there was named Nan Yi. Li Chu even went to see it; he looked exactly like An Jiahe from his memory.

The presence of these people made him feel very uneasy. If all of this was a dream, then what was happening to him? Was it still useful for him to work hard and study the traditional Chinese medicine knowledge in his mind? However, the details of his life over the past two years made him more willing to believe that he had indeed traveled through time.

Discarding these chaotic thoughts, Li Chu washed up and returned to his room. With a thought, he took out a set of golden needles, along with alcohol and cotton swabs from his spatial storage. This set of golden needles was a gift from the system when he checked in. He then turned and headed towards the old lady's house in the backyard.
