Chapter Twenty-Eight: This Isn't Right

Li Chu's heart melted at the sound of that soft, adorable voice.

He took two White Rabbit candies out of his pocket, stuffed them into Xiao Dang's hand, and said, "Xiao Dang is such a good boy. Here are two candies. You can eat one and share one with your brother when you get back."

"Okay, Uncle."

Looking up at Qin Huairu, he said, "Go back quickly, sister-in-law."

"Thank you, Dr. Li."

Li Chu waved his hand. "Alright, sister-in-law, don't be so polite. We're neighbors. Go back now. I'm going inside." With that, Li Chu went inside.

Qin Huairu carried the child and the flour bag and went back.

As soon as we entered the house and put Xiaodang down, she ran over to Banggeng and held out her little hand, showing off a White Rabbit milk candy: "Brother, brother, Uncle gave us this candy, saying we can each have one."

Jia Dongxu was swaying on the bed as he looked at Qin Huairu and asked, "Did you borrow it back?"

Qin Huairu put the flour bag into the flour vat before saying, "I borrowed it back. It feels like more than 10 jin (5 catties) to me, probably more."

Jia Dongxu sat there and sighed, "Sigh!"

Aunt Jia sat on the edge of the bed, doing needlework. She looked up at the two children sharing candy and said, "Li Chu is a good child."

Qin Huairu didn't say anything, but took a basin to fetch water, preparing to help her man wash up.

Jia Dongxu said, "If I can pass the evaluation at the end of this year, I will be able to get a salary of 38.7 yuan, and our family's life will be much better then."

As Qin Huairu added hot water to the basin, she said, "Brother Dongxu, our family's future will definitely get better and better."

Aunt Jia smiled and continued doing her needlework.

Li Chu had already finished washing up in the front yard and was comfortably lying on the bed reading a book. With his current physical condition, let alone three people sharing two bottles of wine, he could easily drink two bottles by himself.

Days passed by, and as July arrived, the weather grew increasingly hot.

Li Chu realized that he seemed to be becoming somewhat impervious to heat and cold. If this continued, would he turn into that silly guy from America who wore his red underwear on the outside?

I imagined the scene in my mind, and oh my, the image was too beautiful to bear! I quickly shook my head and dismissed the thought. I'll leave the task of saving the earth to others; I'll just be an ordinary citizen and live my own life.

The hospital's facilities are quite good; every office has a ceiling fan, but they're a bit old, probably from the Republican era. When turned on, they creak and spin, and there's only one speed setting, unlike later ceiling fans that can adjust the wind speed.

Look at Ding Qiunan across from me; her face is flushed, probably because it's a bit hot.

Since there were no patients around, Li Chu went out for a while and came back with two popsicles in his hand. He placed one next to Ding Qiunan, saying, "Cool this off, it's too hot today."

After saying that, he started eating first.

Ding Qiunan glanced at Li Chu, then at the popsicle beside her; she could already feel the coolness emanating from it.

Without saying a word, he picked up the popsicle, peeled off the paper covering it, and started eating.

The cool sensation and sweet taste made Xiao Ding squint her eyes in comfort.

During this time, Li Chu would occasionally feed Ding Qiunan some snacks, sometimes a few melon seeds, sometimes a few pine nuts, and sometimes a piece or two of milk candy.

Li Chu sensed that Ding Qiunan had gotten used to him feeding her.

After finishing her popsicle, Ding Qiunan lowered her head, seemingly lost in thought, not reading a book. Suddenly, she raised her head, took a deep breath, and, as if summoning great courage, called out Li Chu's name.

Li Chu was stunned. Ding Qiunan had been here for nearly three months for further studies, and she always called him Dr. Li, never by his name, which made him very uncomfortable.

Li Chu slowly raised his head and looked at Ding Qiunan, wondering what she wanted to say.

Ding Qiunan held her breath, and when she saw Li Chu raise his head, she quickly turned her head to check that no one was outside, then turned back to Li Chu and said, "Let's be together."

Upon hearing these words, Li Chu felt as if he had been struck by lightning. He was jolted awake, his eyes widened as he stared at Ding Qiunan, and he couldn't even speak properly. His usual calm and collected demeanor was gone.

"Wait...wait...wait a minute, this...this isn't right...this isn't right."

Ding Qiunan was a little confused by what he said. What was wrong? His answer shouldn't be like this.

Ding Qiunan's mind was full of questions.

Li Chu finally recovered and said, "This is not right, this is not right. You can't say my lines. Wait for me, just a moment, just one minute."

After saying that, he stood up and ran to the back of the door. There was a washbasin stand there, with clean, cool water in the basin that he had filled that morning. He scooped up the cool water and washed his face, then dried it with his own towel from behind the door. He then sat down properly in the chair and looked at Ding Qiunan.

Ding Qiunan was a little confused by Li Chu's actions. She just stared at Li Chu and turned her head with his movements. When she saw that Li Chu was sitting down, she wanted to hear what he had to say.

After Li Chu sat down, he stared intently at Ding Qiunan and said, "Comrade Ding Qiunan, you can't steal my lines. I should be the one to say them." He then cleared his throat and said, "Ahem, Comrade Ding Qiunan, let's be together. I like you."

After hearing what he said, Ding Qiunan's dazed mind finally cleared up, her face flushed red, and she quickly lowered her head, saying softly but firmly, "Mmm!"

Upon hearing this, Li Chu stood up excitedly, clenched his fist, and waved it vigorously.

If it weren't for the inconvenient location, he would have loved to burst out laughing three times.

By this time, Miss Ding had recovered and looked at Li Chu, who was grinning foolishly, feeling a sweet warmth in her heart. "Please sit down, we're in the office, someone will be coming in soon."

"Hey, hey, sit down, sit down." Li Chu responded, and after sitting down, he still looked at Ding Qiunan and grinned foolishly.

"Look at you, you silly thing."

"I'm so happy and excited!" she said. "To celebrate, how about we go eat at Quanjude after get off work?"

"Oh, that must be so expensive!" Miss Ding was a little reluctant.

"Hey, we're just happy today, so we're celebrating. From now on, we'll eat in the cafeteria."

"Alright then, but don't do it again!"
