Chapter Nine Traditional Chinese Medicine

Li Chu stood up to move aside from the desk, picked up the teacup on the desk, filled it with water, and then put it back on the desk.

Director Liang waved his hand: "Alright, stop busying yourself. I just want to tell you one thing."

"Please speak."

“Starting next week, each unit’s primary health clinic in Beijing will send one person to major hospitals for a six-month advanced training program. Our hospital is responsible for the steel mill and the cotton mill, about ten people in total. One of them has been assigned to our Traditional Chinese Medicine department, and you will be in charge of training him.”

"No, Director, there are several senior colleagues here. It's not appropriate for me to take them on."

"Alright, stop making excuses. If I say it's suitable, then it's suitable. I'll have someone come to you when they arrive. That's all for now, go back." Director Liang, though old, still had that patriarchal style. After saying that, he sat down at his desk and started drinking tea.

Li Chu replied helplessly, "Alright, Director, I will definitely complete the task." After saying that, seeing that the director had nothing more to say, he left the director's office and walked towards his clinic.

Back in his clinic, Luo Qicheng was seeing a patient.

Li Chu glanced at it but didn't say anything before sitting down at his desk and starting to read.

After taking the patient's pulse, Luo Qicheng asked a few more questions and then began writing medical orders and prescriptions. After finishing the prescriptions, he looked at them again and again, appearing very hesitant. He pursed his lips, looked up at Li Chu, and said, "Dr. Li, could you please take a look? I'm a little unsure about this."

Li Chu looked up at the patient and then at Luo Qicheng. "Alright, let's learn from each other." He then asked the patient to sit down, placed his hand on the pulse pillow, and began to take the patient's pulse.

After taking Luo Qicheng's pulse, he said, "Dr. Luo, let me take a look at the medical record and prescription." He took it and looked at it. "Dr. Luo, there's nothing wrong with your medical advice, but this prescription..." He pointed to two herbs on the prescription, "They should each be reduced by two qian."

Luo Qicheng frowned and thought for a while before explaining his reasons for prescribing the medication in this way.

“You’re right, but you’ve overlooked the patient’s age,” Li Chu said, looking at him.

Upon hearing this, Luo Qicheng suddenly realized, "Right, right, this lady is already sixty years old. The medication should not be too strong; it should be gentler. I misunderstood."

After saying that, he took the prescription and started making changes. Once he finished, he handed it to the burly man standing behind the patient, saying, "Just go to the pharmacy and get the medicine according to this prescription. Take it twice a day, morning and evening, for three days and you should be fine. Then you won't need to come back."

"Yes, I've got it. Thank you, doctor." The man took the prescription and bowed to Li Chu again. "Thank you, doctor!"

Li Chu smiled and nodded without saying anything, then lowered his head and continued reading.

The man helped his elderly mother up and walked out.

Nurse Yang followed them out and pointed out the location of the traditional Chinese medicine pharmacy. After they left, she turned and went back into the consultation room, grabbed her notebook, and went to Li Chu's desk.

"Dr. Li, excuse me, could you tell me why the dosage of medication should be reduced for a 60-year-old?"

Li Chu slammed the book down on the table. Knowing that Yang Xiaohong's foundation wasn't very strong, he broke it down for her step by step, explaining things slowly and deliberately. He started by discussing dosage and properties of the medicine, then moved on to the body's tolerance and dependence.

Yang Xiaohong was overjoyed, diligently jotting down Li Chu's words in her notebook. If there were parts she didn't quite understand, that was alright; she'd write them down first and then ponder them later.

Across from him, Luo Qicheng was also writing furiously.

After speaking for more than half an hour, Li Chu stopped, took a sip of tea to moisten his throat, and said, "I'll stop here for now. Let's talk more once you understand."

Then he said to Yang Xiaohong, "If you want to take the exam to become a traditional Chinese medicine pharmacist, you should find Director Liang and ask him to put in a good word with the pharmacy so you can learn by observing the actual medicines. Whether it's traditional Chinese medicine or traditional Chinese medicine, you can't just read books; you have to get hands-on experience." After saying that, he didn't say anything more.

Across from him, Luo Qicheng also said, "That's right, Nurse Yang, you really should go and take a look at the Chinese medicine pharmacy. When I was an apprentice, I spent three years just learning to identify herbs."

"Thank you, Dr. Li and Dr. Luo. I'll talk to the head doctor at noon." Yang Xiaohong nodded. Then, pointing to the books on Li Chu's desk, she asked, "Dr. Li, why are you reading Western medicine books?"

Li Chu was reading about surgery. "It's always good to learn more. Western medicine has many treatment methods that are indeed more effective than traditional Chinese medicine. Nowadays, most people who come to the hospital are suffering from unbearable pain. What do they ask for? They just want quick results and hope that the doctor can remove their pain quickly. Western medicine happens to have an advantage over traditional Chinese medicine in this regard. As long as the examination is done and the diagnosis is made, they can treat the headache, the foot pain, and if all else fails, they can just take the scalpel and cut it out."

He took a sip of water and continued, "Our traditional Chinese medicine focuses on regulating the body and trying to solve the patient's illness from the root, so it takes longer to see results, but it's better for the patient's future! The problem is that when patients are in unbearable pain right now, how can they think about the future? That's why there are more people coming to the hospital to see Western doctors than to see our traditional Chinese medicine practitioners."

He paused for a moment: "Actually, I always feel that when traditional Chinese medicine doctors give prescriptions, they shouldn't talk in such a mysterious way, like the Five Elements, Yin and Yang, or the Eight Trigrams. Do ordinary people who come to see a doctor understand these things? They only have one purpose: to relieve their pain. So we should try to be concise and tell the patient the diagnosis directly, and then tell them how to treat it. Of course, this also depends on the person. For many people who look educated and have status, you have to explain things to them in detail, so that they will feel that you value them."

After saying that, he waved his hand and said, "These are just my personal opinions, you can just listen to them."

As soon as he finished speaking, the sound of applause, "Clap clap clap," and the words "Well said!" came from the doorway.
