Chapter Twenty-Three: Curing Illness

Just as I arrived at work that morning, an elderly man and an elderly woman came over.

I took the pulse of an elderly woman, and the effect was good, so I changed the prescription. I also wrote a prescription for an elderly man.

"This prescription is from an older woman. After you go home, drink it for 7 days, twice a day, after meals, with at least 8 hours between each dose."

“Uncle, you should drink this for 5 days, three times a day, after meals.”

Then he added, "Uncle, you must make sure you distinguish between the two medicines and never mix them up."

"Okay, Xiao Chu. I feel fine, why do I need to take medicine?" The old man was a little confused.

“Sir, you’re almost 50. No matter how good your health is, you can’t compare to 20 or 30-year-olds. So you need to take care of yourself and make your body even better.”

"Okay, okay, thank you, Xiao Chu."

The older woman also thanked them repeatedly.

"Grandpa and Grandma, don't be so polite, we're all from the same compound. You won't need to take any more medicine after this dose, and you can..." Before he could finish speaking, the old man and the old woman understood what he meant, and their smiles widened even more.

After the elderly couple left, Ding Qiunan, who hadn't spoken for a while, finally asked, "Dr. Li, you can also treat infertility?"

"It mainly depends on the patient's condition. Like these two elderly people in our hospital just now, the main problem is that the woman had an illness when she was young that wasn't completely cured, which led to her being physically weak. If it's a complete organ disease or caused by some other special reason, then there's nothing I can do. What, you're asking about this? Do you have patients with this condition?"

Ding Qiunan nodded: "I have a friend who was also my father's former apprentice. His wife was pregnant once but fell and miscarried. She has never been able to get pregnant again. She went to the hospital several times, and the doctors all said that she could never get pregnant again."

"If you have time, you'd better bring the person over so I can take a look. I can't say anything if I haven't seen the patient before."

"Okay, I'll go back next time I have a break and ask them to come and visit when they have some free time."

Li Chu handed her a few sheets of paper: "These are the acupoints for both hands. Have you memorized the acupoints for your head?"

"Thank you, Dr. Li. I've almost finished memorizing the head part."

The weekend arrived quickly, and yesterday afternoon Li Chu went back to check on the progress of his house.

The second floor has been partitioned off, the skylight has been opened, and they've redone the waterproofing on the outside and replaced the tiles that needed replacing. It looks pretty good, but we'll have to wait until everything is finished to see the details.

Li Chu had already arranged to go to her brother-in-law's house today, so she waited in the dormitory until after 10 o'clock before going out, just in time for lunch.

I bought a bunch of delicious food for my nephew and niece again. Then my sister gave me a lecture.

After dinner, my brother-in-law took him out on his bicycle.

It was only when Li Chu was walking down the street that he realized the person he was going to meet today was his brother-in-law's former leader when he first joined the organization before liberation, and also the person who introduced his sister and brother-in-law.

On the way, Wang Ziwen kept reminding Li Chu that once they got there, even if they did nothing else, they should never do anything that was not safe.

The leader's home was in the government's residential compound. After arriving at the leader's home and settling in the living room, Wang Ziwen introduced Li Chu.

The leader smiled and said to Li Chu, "Dr. Li, you've worked hard. You have to make this trip when I'm supposed to be resting."

"It's no trouble at all. Just the fact that you were the matchmaker for my sister and brother-in-law makes you my elder, so it's only right that I make this trip."

"Haha, yes, that's right, I am indeed your elder." The leader laughed heartily.

The group sat in the living room and chatted for a while.

Li Chu asked, "Sir, would it be convenient for me to take your pulse?"

"It's convenient, there's no inconvenience at all. I invited you over today so I could have you take a look at it. Is it alright in the living room?"

Li Chu sat down next to the leader and began to take his pulse.

After a while, Li Chu put his hand down and said, "Boss, have you been getting up at night a lot lately? And you always feel like you haven't finished urinating?"

"Yes, you're right. And I feel it's getting worse, I often have backaches and leg pains."

"Boss, please find a bed to lie down, I'll give you an acupuncture."

"Okay, come to this room." The leader led Li Chu to the study, where there was a single bed.

After the acupuncture, Li Chu prescribed another dose of medicine. "Boss, take this medicine for seven days, once a day, but after meals."

"I'll go get the medicine in a bit." The leader took the prescription. "Dr. Li, I'd like to ask, approximately when will this take effect?"

Li Chu thought for a moment: "It will be effective in three days at the latest."

"Okay, okay, you don't know, getting up at night has been exhausting for me."

Wang Ziwen kept giving Li Chu meaningful glances, signaling him not to speak so confidently.

Li Chu saw it and shook his head without showing any emotion.

The three chatted for a while longer, and seeing that the leader was getting sleepy, Wang Ziwen and Li Chu said goodbye and left the leader's house.

After they left, Wang Ziwen asked, "Xiao Chu, are you confident?"

"Don't worry, brother-in-law. When I said three days, I was being generous. In fact, I gave him acupuncture, and it will be effective tonight. I'm very confident."

"Good lad!" Wang Ziwen patted Li Chu on the shoulder happily.

"Brother-in-law, is there any hope of getting it done?"

"Yes, our bureau chief is retiring this summer. I still have a good chance."

"Brother-in-law, your former boss has had this illness for a year or two. He must have seen many doctors, had acupuncture and taken medicine, but it has been fluctuating. Actually, I didn't mention it when I was at his house earlier, but his illness is probably caused by back pain. Many doctors were misled by the symptom of getting up at night, which is why they didn't cure it completely."

"Is your old boss's back pain very serious?"

“It’s not too serious yet. I’ve controlled it with acupuncture, and it won’t get worse. But treating the symptoms isn’t the root cause. I estimate it can only be controlled for a maximum of two years, and it will relapse afterward.”

"Do you have any way to cure it completely?" Wang Ziwen was still very concerned about his former boss.

"I don't have any clue yet. Let me go back and think about it carefully. Don't tell your old boss about this issue for now."

Wang Ziwen nodded, looking somewhat worried.
