Chapter 79: Not Hanged

In the end, Old Lady Liu couldn't resist her granddaughter's pestering and had to tell her granddaughter about the strange things that had happened in the village recently.

"Recently, several villages near our village have been plagued by evil spirits. Several women have died, including the wife of Liu Yawen next door. There have been four deaths so far. The strangest thing is that all of them were pregnant. Two lives have been lost in one death. It's really pitiful."

Gu Mingtai, who was talking to Old Man Liu, looked at Old Lady Liu just like Zhang Meng after hearing what Old Lady Liu said.

"Grandma, can you tell me why these people were hanged?"

"Yes, they were all hanged, and they were all pregnant when they died. There's something even stranger. The families of those who died nearby didn't dare tell anyone, for fear of causing trouble. But I know, I heard, that after those women died, the babies in their bellies disappeared."

When Zhang Meng and Gu Mingtai heard this, they looked at each other and both heard something unusual in this matter.

"Grandma, I want to go over to the next door and take a look."

When Old Lady Liu heard this, her expression changed immediately and she tried to stop him, "Why are you going there? You can't go. That place is filled with evil spirits right now. You can't go there."

Zhang Meng smiled, patted Old Lady Liu's nervous hand, and comforted her, "Grandma, don't worry about me. Who am I? I can catch ghosts. Ghosts should be scared of me."

Uncle Liu immediately encouraged him, "Xiao Meng, go ahead. Go check on me. Ever since what happened next door, I've been having trouble sleeping every night. I'm terrified."

Especially after he experienced things like ghosts and gods, he became even more afraid.

Old Mrs. Liu was already very surprised that her granddaughter went to the next door, but her youngest son kept persuading her granddaughter to go. She was so angry that she took off one of her shoes and threw it at him.

"Oh, Mom, why are you hitting me? Am I your biological son? Why do you hit me at the slightest provocation?"

Uncle Liu asked with a look of grievance while rubbing his belly.

Old Mrs. Liu sneered, "If you weren't my son, I would have kicked you out long ago." Zhang Meng looked at his frustrated uncle and smiled secretly.

When he raised his head again, the smile on his face was gone, "Grandma, just let me see, is it okay?"

"Grandma, let Xiaomeng go. I will go with her and I won't let anything happen to her." At this time, Gu Mingtai also joined in.

Old Lady Liu glanced at her future grandson-in-law who had made such a serious promise to her, and immediately changed her tune, "Okay, go ahead. Just be careful."

When Zhang Meng was led by Gu Mingtai out of the Liu family's house, she was still stunned. When she was about to enter the door of the next door, Zhang Meng suddenly pulled Gu Taiqian who was walking in front of her and said, "Gu Mingtai, the more I think about it, the more wrong it seems. No matter how I tried to please my grandma just now, she just didn't agree to let me come. How come she agreed as soon as you said it? Are you her granddaughter or am I?"

Gu Mingtai chuckled softly and turned his head to look at him, "Of course you are. I'm a man, so I should be your nephew as well."

Zhang Meng curled her lips and was about to speak again when suddenly the sound of two children crying came from inside.

The two of them walked inside immediately.

It is not easy for Liu Yawen's family to have enough to eat, so it can be seen that the funeral here is also very simple.

When Zhang Meng and Gu Mingtai came over, they happened to see a man in Taoist robes performing rituals next to the coffin.

Liu Yawen, who was burning paper money, saw someone coming in and immediately stood up and walked over.

"Who are you two?" Liu Yawen felt a little nervous as they looked unfamiliar.

"Don't be nervous, we came from next door. We heard from my grandma what happened here, so we came to pay tribute to the deceased."

After listening to Zhang Meng's explanation, Liu Yawen finally breathed a sigh of relief and immediately invited them both in.

As she entered the mourning hall, Zhang Meng immediately felt that it was very cold inside. What made her hair stand on end was that next to the Taoist priest stood a woman covered in blood. This woman looked exactly like the portrait placed above.

Looking at the Taoist priest who was completely immersed in the ritual, Zhang Meng kindly walked up to him and asked quietly, "Master, you have been performing rituals here for so long, don't you feel anything strange around you?"

She could see that Liu Yawen's wife seemed to have a lot of resentment towards this Taoist priest.

When Taoist Wu heard Zhang Meng's question, he immediately stopped practicing and tightened his robe. "Comrade, do you also think this is strange? I do too, but I took the two dollars from them, so I have to do this."

Zhang Meng now completely understood why Liu Yawen's wife was so resentful towards the Taoist priest. It turned out that the Taoist priest had asked her family for so much money, and she was feeling unfair for the people in this family.

"Master, let me advise you not to charge too much. This family seems to be having a hard time. The two dollars you just gave them is probably enough to feed them for a month."

Taoist Priest Wu raised an eyebrow. "This is the market. Right now, in this entire county, I'm the only one who still takes on this kind of work. I'm working my butt off for it, and I'd be doing myself a disservice if I didn't charge a higher price."

Zhang Meng sneered, "If your prediction is accurate, then the two dollars would be worth it. But why do I feel like you're trying to scam me? You act like you're completely unaware that the deceased has been following you the entire time."

Wu Runfa's heart skipped a beat, and he turned around in fear, "Where, where, where? Don't scare me."

Zhang Meng pointed to his left, "Why would I scare you? It's right to your left."
