A few days later, the police station sent the captain with 50 yuan, 5 jin of meat, 10 jin of rice, and a certificate of honor.
Even the usually composed captain smiled and praised her for doing a great job.
Lin Chuchu waited and waited, until the autumn harvest was almost here, but the police never came to make their move. Instead, she received a transfer order.
Lin Chuchu was transferred to the provincial capital to assist the research institute in translating documents, and her food supplies were moved.
It says "temporary" on it, but nobody knows how long it will take to get back.
If he does a good job, he might be retained.
Lin Chuchu was picked up by a military vehicle; besides the money and tickets, the most important thing she took away were those books.
As they were about to leave, Liu Rong sighed softly beside him.
"Of the three of us, now I'm the only one left. Mu Chen will be leaving soon too, won't he?"
Mu Chen's identity is not simple, so he definitely won't stay here often.
Lin Chuchu patted his shoulder and whispered to him, "The college entrance examination will be reinstated within two years. I will definitely take the exam in Beijing. You study hard, and we will have a chance to meet again."
Mu Chen had said this to him before, but he hadn't tried hard enough. "Okay, I will try harder."
Two soldiers stood beside the military vehicle, their expressions serious, and stepped forward to take Lin Chuchu's package.
"Comrade Lin, it's getting late, and we have to catch the train this afternoon."
Lin Chuchu looked back at her first house and sighed helplessly.
She hadn't even had a full winter yet. She had just written a letter to the newspaper asking Liu Rong to mail it out. She had just sent out the translated manuscript yesterday. She probably wouldn't receive the remittance slip, so she would have to write to Liu Rong again when she arrived at her destination and ask him to send the money over.
She hadn't developed any feelings for the people in the village yet; her only two friends were Mu Chen and Liu Rong.
I haven't seen Mu Chen for several days, and I don't know if I'll ever have the chance to see him again in this lifetime.
Lin Chuchu got into the military vehicle without looking back, and it drove out of the village amidst the curious chatter of the villagers.
The provincial capital Lin Chuchu went to was not the local provincial capital, but a place further away, the forefront of the economy.
The military vehicle didn't stop; it went to the train station, and one of the soldiers went to the waiting room and got a ticket.
"Comrade Lin, someone will pick you up when you arrive in the provincial capital. This is some dry food prepared for you, enough for two days."
The ticket is for a hard sleeper, so I don't have to squeeze in with those people.
Even with money, you can't necessarily buy a hard sleeper berth these days.
Two soldiers helped her into the car, filled a kettle with hot water, and whispered some instructions.
"Thank you both."
Lin Chuchu said with a smile.
The carriage was quiet and there was no one else around. Train attendants passed by from time to time, so it felt very safe.
Now that she was alone, Lin Chuchu opened the aluminum lunchbox. Inside were braised pork and stir-fried cabbage, still warm.
The braised pork will solidify if left to cook for too long, so we need to finish the meat today.
Lin Chuchu ate very slowly. The train was about to depart, and a middle-aged couple boarded the train from the opposite direction.
Lin Chuchu glanced casually at the woman's stomach; it was clear she was pregnant.
The three of them didn't talk to each other. Lin Chuchu lay on the sleeper bed, took out a pear from her pocket, and started eating it with a crunching sound.
Two days on the train, a bit boring.
In the middle of the night, a few more people boarded the train, and the train was full.
Lin Chuchu went to the bathroom to wash up and noticed that the couple across from her seemed off, especially the pregnant woman, whose eyes were red, as if she had just been crying.
Lin Chuchu was a little puzzled, but didn't think much of it.
“Ah Zhen, you know I have a job. If I send you back to your hometown, my mother will take care of you.”
The woman turned her head away and ignored him, saying, "I can't get along with your mother; we fight every day."
"Why can't you get along? Just bear with it a little longer. When the child is a bit older, I'll come and bring you and your child back."
“I told you to let my mother come and help me soothe the baby, but you wouldn’t let me.”
"What a joke! My own offspring, how could I let outsiders fool me?"
The two were about to start arguing, and everyone except Lin Chuchu tried to persuade them to stop.
The man, angered, went to smoke. The woman, sobbing, said to Lin Chuchu, "Little sister, never marry someone far away."
He understood this perfectly well; if he could avoid getting married, it would be best not to.
Two days later, Lin Chuchu finally got off the train, carrying large and small bags, and squeezed out of the crowd.
Suddenly I saw a soldier holding a sign next to a military vehicle.
"**Village, Lin Chuchu".
It felt like the kind of airport pickup ceremony we have in later generations.
Lin Chuchu walked up to the two men and said, "Comrades, hello. I am Lin Chuchu. This is the certificate issued by the village and my identification documents."
After carefully checking, the soldier saluted Lin Chuchu.
"Hello, Comrade Lin Chuchu, please get in the car."
The car drove very slowly, going further and further off the beaten path, eventually heading straight into the deep mountains.
It's hard to imagine that there's actually a campsite inside.
Lin Chuchu had a dreamy expression on her face; she had never been to a military camp before.
Soon they arrived at an office. After knocking on the door, Lin Chuchu saw a middle-aged man with gray hair who looked to be no more than fifty years old.
"Sir, the person has been brought."
The leader gave a soft "hmm" without even raising his head.
"Please sit wherever you like, I'll be done in a minute."
Lin Chuchu found a chair and sat down, not daring to move around or drift aimlessly.
As time passed, the leader seemed to have forgotten about Lin Chuchu.
An hour later, the leader finally looked up and said, "I'm sorry, Comrade Lin, I got so busy that I forgot the time."
He's young, but has a calm and composed demeanor. Not bad, really not bad.
Lin Chuchu smiled at him, "It's alright, Chief."
