"You're here to translate a manuscript, and you've made over ten mistakes on one piece. What are you trying to do?"
"And you..."
The old man pointed at a girl in front of him.
“You’re here to work, not to find a partner. You’re just staring at those soldiers and doing nothing. Is the country supporting you for nothing? If you can’t do anything, get out. Don’t just sit here doing nothing.”
The girl was almost in tears. She was 23 years old, knew a little English, and had finally found a job. All she wanted was to find a boyfriend.
Perhaps he was thirsty, the old man picked up his teacup and gulped down several mouthfuls.
Seeing that Lin Chuchu's expression was not good, the soldier next to her coughed lightly.
The old man immediately turned his head.
"Comrade Song, this is the new translator. He went from a temporary translator to a full-fledged translator in just one month."
"She also translated the document that the police station sent over."
He had to explain clearly that the leader said Lin Chuchu was a talented person and they had to keep her; they couldn't let Comrade Song scare her away.
Sure enough, after her explanation, Old Master Song's gaze towards Lin Chuchu softened considerably.
"The work here is very hard, so we hope you will work hard and have the right attitude."
Lin Chuchu nodded. "Okay, boss."
Old Man Song was very satisfied with Lin Chuchu's attitude. "You can just call me Uncle Song. Each of you translators has a private office, and the environment is quite nice."
They knew the translators preferred a quiet environment, so each person was assigned a private room—or rather, a small cubicle.
Inside, there was a table and chairs, a lamp, and a small stove.
There were boxes of manuscripts next to it, and the room was bright with large windows.
Lin Chuchu was very satisfied with this environment.
This office used to be empty, and the stove had to be lit on the spot.
Lin Chuchu lit the stove, put in wood and coal, and once the room wasn't so cold anymore, she rubbed her hands together and sat down in a chair.
The office wasn't very soundproof, and the old man outside was swearing all the time. Lin Chuchu had gotten used to it after hearing it so many times.
Lin Chuchu picked up a manuscript, an article that seemed to be about weapons, but she didn't know where it was taken from.
Is this a weapons research institute?
Lin Chuchu first checked it carefully, and then used the software in the space to translate it.
Before she came in, someone told her that these things were all secrets and that she could not take even a single piece of paper out. Even discarded drafts had to be numbered and categorized.
Lin Chuchu didn't want to waste time, so once she had a clear understanding of the situation, she immediately started writing.
The office door wasn't locked. While she was writing furiously, someone gently pushed the door open to check if the stove had gone out.
Seeing that Lin Chuchu remained in the same position without moving, Old Song was more satisfied.
"I never expected that the youngest girl could sit still like that."
After an unknown amount of time, the room lights were turned on, and Lin Chuchu finally looked up, placing the last manuscript on the corner of the table with satisfaction.
Write a serial number on the bottom of each sheet of paper and clip them together. There are three small sheets in total, each containing approximately 2,000-3,000 words.
Just then, there was a knock on the door. Lin Chuchu walked to the door, opened it, and saw an unfamiliar female soldier standing outside.
"Comrade Lin, it's time for lunch. Please come with me to eat."
Lin Chuchu nodded, and was about to say something when the leader she had met yesterday walked over with a stranger and Old Song.
The leader's eyes lit up.
"Comrade Lin, are you settling in well today?"
He really wanted to ask how much had been translated, but he was afraid of scaring Lin Chuchu.
Fortunately, Lin Chuchu understood everyone's anxiety and handed him the manuscript.
"There are three copies in total, please take a look."
Before he could finish speaking, Old Song exclaimed in surprise, "Three portions? That's so many!"
The translators under my command are lucky if they can produce one a day; some like to dawdle and it can take them more than three days.
The leader handed the document to the man next to him, saying, "Political Commissar, have someone check it and see if there are any mistakes."
"Okay, I'll go right away."
After the political commissar left, Old Song approached with a grin, "Chuchu, if you're bored tonight, you can come over. There's always someone on duty here."
"I... need to get a good rest tonight, otherwise it will affect my work efficiency the next day."
Lin Chuchu forced herself to say that she didn't want to work overtime; she wanted to study.
Overtime work must be nipped in the bud.
This was just an afternoon. If she had to spend a whole day in the office after the training a month later, she'd probably go crazy.
"Um, sir, Section Chief Song, I'm going to eat now. That comrade has been waiting for me for ages."
After saying that, Lin Chuchu took her lunchbox and a bottle of mushroom sauce and left.
"This little girl is quite eager to cook!"
Old Song laughed heartily, feeling that he hadn't met such an energetic young girl in a long time.
The two arrived at the canteen, which had just opened for business, and every stall was packed with people.
"Comrade Lin, please find a seat first, I'll get you some food."
Since everyone has a set meal, it doesn't matter who gets it. Lin Chuchu handed her the lunchbox, "Thank you, Sister Wang."
She doesn't like crowded places; it's best if she doesn't have to squeeze in.
Sister Wang really liked this little girl; she was polite and not as aloof as the others.
Lin Chuchu found a seat, and Sister Wang quickly brought the food back.
For dinner, we had steamed buns. They were very big, dark in color, and mixed with coarse grain flour.
The vegetables are green beans and shredded potatoes.
Lin Chuchu opened the lid of the mushroom sauce. "Sister Wang, can you handle spicy food? It's not spicy, just a little bit."
