The next morning, before Lin Chuchu had even gotten up, Mu's mother went out.
Last night, the two little ones hadn't seen their mother for a long time and were so excited that they wouldn't sleep, constantly talking to Lin Chuchu.
Later, it was Mu Chen who, seeing how sleepy Lin Chuchu was, urged the two little ones to go to sleep.
Lin Chuchu tucked the blankets around the two children, then got out of bed and went to the kitchen.
Grandma gets up very early and starts preparing breakfast for the whole family as soon as she gets up in the morning.
Lin Chuchu tiptoed over and couldn't help but ask, "Grandma, why are you up so early? Sleep a little longer, I'll make breakfast with you."
Grandma smiled when she saw Lin Chuchu, "We older folks can't sleep, so we get up early."
"Why didn't you sleep a little longer? You finally get a holiday."
Lin Chuchu washed her hands and came over to help make dumplings. "We do morning exercises every day at the base, so I wake up on time now."
The buns were filled with meat, but Lin Chuchu looked at them and saw they were filled with beef, and exclaimed in surprise.
"Grandma, why is there beef?"
Grandma placed the wrapped buns on the curtain beside her and said with a smile.
“I heard yesterday that a family was going to slaughter a cow, so I specially asked someone to save a large piece, thinking of making you steamed buns or big dumplings today.”
Lin Chuchu was even more surprised, but also somewhat puzzled. Why would they kill a cow out of the blue? Could it be a sick cow?
Grandma said, "It wasn't a sick cow, it was an old cow that had injured its leg and was clearly not going to make it, so we slaughtered it and sold the meat, hoping to recoup some of the losses."
Now all cattle belong to the state, and they cannot be slaughtered at will. Slaughtering this particular cow also requires approval from higher authorities.
They're all neighbors, so if anyone has something going on, they'll find out quickly. Before the meat was even slaughtered, it was all sold out.
Thankfully, Grandma passed away quickly, otherwise all this meat would have been lost.
The two chatted as they worked, and soon they had made quite a few buns. Lin Chuchu washed her hands and took out a handful of soybeans and red dates to make soy milk.
The soy milk maker isn't too loud, so it seems to have been improved.
Soon, a rich aroma of soy milk filled the kitchen.
The doors to several rooms opened, and Mu Chen, Qin Dui, Xiao Lu, and two dressed children, Da Bao and Xiao Bao, came out.
Mu Chen had been working overtime for several days in a row, and he finally got home early yesterday, so he slept in a little longer today.
Everyone greeted each other and took their toiletries to wash up.
The two children huddled around Lin Chuchu, so Lin Chuchu couldn't help much anymore. Fortunately, she had finished everything she needed to do, and Mu Chen took over the task of tending the fire.
Grandma likes to cook in a big pot, saying that food cooked in a big pot tastes better.
Breakfast consisted of steamed buns with soy milk, some twisted rolls, and Grandma also made a bowl of steamed egg custard for everyone.
"Grandma, I'm going to see when my parents will be back."
Mu's mother went to find someone, and Mu's father, worried, went with her.
They haven't come back yet, and I don't know if something happened to them.
Lin Chuchu also said, "I'll go with you."
Grandma waved her hand, "Go ahead, go ask. If it takes a little more time, you two can come back for dinner first."
Lin Chuchu smiled and nodded.
Mu Chen knew where the other party's house was; it wasn't too far. When he arrived at the door, he saw Mu's mother walking out with a chicken and a duck in her hands, looking very proud and confident.
A group of middle-aged women followed behind, each carrying some or less of their spoils.
Seeing the two of them approach, Mu's mother handed the chickens and ducks she was carrying to Mu Chen.
"Here, this is the compensation they gave to Da Bao and Xiao Bao. We'll make them chicken soup tonight."
The sound was so loud that everyone present could hear it; a woman's wailing came from the courtyard.
The cries and curses were filled with resentment and anger.
Mother Mu, hands on her hips, turned around and shouted, "What are you crying for? Are you mourning? You love to take advantage of others, and you don't even educate your child properly. How dare you cry?"
"If I were your daughter-in-law, I would have chased you away with a big broom long ago. How dare you stay here?"
Mother Mu has been in business for many years, and her silver tongue is unmatched by most people.
Sure enough, as soon as Mother Mu finished speaking, the sounds in the courtyard came to an abrupt halt.
Lin Chuchu's eyes widened, filled with surprise and admiration.
"Mom, you're amazing. I wish I had your mouth."
Mother Mu grinned, but still glared at her. "What are you envious of? Do you need to resort to shrewish behavior like me for your job?"
“You are a cultured person, you shouldn’t act like us common folk.”
My daughter-in-law is a researcher; I can't let her corrupt people.
She cannot compensate the country for its losses.
"Sister-in-law, we owe you a lot today, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to argue with that old woman."
"That's right, sister-in-law. Come visit me sometime when you have time."
Mother Mu became famous overnight, which made her look good in front of her old friends. Even the young women and wives looked at Mother Mu with admiration.
Mother Mu waved her hand triumphantly, "Alright, we're all sisters, just let me know if anything comes up in the future."
Mu Chen and Lin Chuchu exchanged a glance, speechless.
They could tell that women were at the forefront of this incident today.
Mr. Mu was standing across the street, chatting with some men who had followed him out of concern.
Hearing this, Mr. Mu looked at Mrs. Mu with a helpless yet doting gaze.
Mr. Mu used to be a government official. The two fell in love freely. When they were dating, Mr. Mu saw how shrewish Mrs. Mu was.
