Chapter 6 Translation Work

The royalties are in the form of a remittance slip; you need to bring your household registration booklet to collect them.

Lin Chuchu's household registration has now been moved to the village. She will take leave tomorrow to go to the county town and mail out the newly written article.

Working during the day and studying and writing at night is actually very tiring.

Lin Chuchu had never worked this hard before.

Despite being physically tired, Lin Chuchu felt extremely satisfied.

The next day when I went to mail it, there were two manuscripts, totaling three thousand words. After thinking for a moment, I wrote a note inside.

Tell the editor that you can translate manuscripts and ask them to send you some to try.

Not only because she wants to earn money through translation, but she also hopes to take this opportunity to learn.

I bought stamps, envelopes, pens, and ink. Oh, and I should also buy some other stationery, like ballpoint pens and pencils.

When news of the resumption of the college entrance examination arrives, these school supplies will inevitably run out of stock.

As I was leaving the post office, I happened to see Mu Chen. Mu Chen was pushing a cart, wearing a military green uniform with the word "postman" embroidered on it.

Upon seeing Lin Chuchu, Mu Chen's eyes flashed with surprise. "Lin, you're at the post office. Are you mailing something?"

He was probably too curious and forgot to maintain his aloof persona.

Lin Chuchu nodded. "I wrote something and submitted it to the newspaper."

I didn't expect Mu Chen to have a formal job so soon after arriving. It seems that no one should be underestimated.

Mu Chen pondered for a moment, "I will be in charge of our village from now on. If you want to mail anything again, you can give it to me. If there is any letter for you, I will keep an eye out and bring it back for you."

It's not safe for a girl to keep going to the county town.

Lin Chuchu smiled and nodded, "Of course I trust Mu Zhiqing, I'll leave things to you from now on."

Mu Chen had completed high school, so he was well-educated and came from a good family. He wouldn't have come here if it weren't for wanting to take care of his maternal grandfather's family who had been sent to the countryside.

The place where I was sent down was next door. I went to check on it beforehand and brought some food.

Just then, a vacancy for a postman appeared in the county town, and he simply spent 500 yuan to buy the job.

The salary isn't high, only 28 a month, but it can be raised to 32 after three months.

The news that Mu Chen had found a job caused a sensation in the educated youth settlement. The educated youth were extremely envious, as not having to work in the fields was better than anything else.

With this convenience, Lin Chuchu no longer had to worry about attracting attention and could focus on her studies and writing.

These past few days, Lin Chuchu has been studying English every day and trying to translate Chinese characters into English.

Translation work is in high demand. The country is currently facing a shortage of various talents, and English and Russian translators are especially scarce.

Lin Chuchu still works most of the day and goes up the mountain in the afternoon. She's been very lucky lately and always manages to find some ripe fruit, such as strawberries, grapes, hawthorns, and small apples.

Since Mu Chen wasn't going up the mountain with them, it wasn't appropriate for Liu Rong and Lin Chuchu to be alone together, so Lin Chuchu decided to go by herself.

She didn't venture deeper into the mountains; who knew if there were large animals inside? She simply stayed on the outskirts.

That day, shortly after returning home, Lin Chuchu saw an envelope slipped under the door as soon as she entered.

The envelope was large and much thicker than the one she had seen last time. Lin Chuchu opened the envelope and, sure enough, found a manuscript entirely in English.

Lin Chuchu was so excited she couldn't stop smiling. Besides the manuscript, there was also a remittance slip with fifteen yuan written on it, and a letter.

The letter stated that after the translated manuscript was taken back, it would need to be reviewed before payment would be made. At that time, a temporary translator certificate would be issued, and after translating 10,000 words, the translator could be promoted to a full-fledged translator, and the payment would also increase.

Lin Chuchu lit a candle and studied for two hours before starting to translate the English manuscript.

This is an excerpt from a foreign magazine. It's very short, and it was Lin Chuchu's first time translating it. It was quite difficult for her, and she had to turn to the book from time to time.

As you become more proficient, your speed will increase significantly.

She rubbed her sore eyes. There were more than three thousand words on the manuscript in front of her, the result of her hard work all night.

While I was carefully checking, a translation suddenly appeared in the lower right corner of the space, highlighting the inaccurate parts in red and suggesting replacements.

Lin Chuchu's heart pounded, and she grinned.

If it weren't for the fact that feudal superstitions aren't fashionable nowadays, she would definitely kowtow to God.

I put the manuscript paper into my spatial storage, planning to rewrite it tomorrow.

The next day, Lin Chuchu went to work, feeling dazed all day, but thankfully she didn't make any major mistakes.

In the evening, I picked up a pen and paper, rewrote the manuscript, put it in an envelope, affixed a stamp, and included two other articles.

They secretly hid the envelope in the woodpile between the two houses, and also placed a small bowl of fresh strawberries inside.

When Mu Chen got up to go to work early in the morning, he saw something. The strawberries looked like they had been washed. He put one in his mouth and found it to be sweet and sour and very delicious.

He frowned. This little girl was too unsuspecting; she knew that fruit was expensive these days.

Thinking about what to give in return, she went back to her room and divided the strawberries in half, leaving half for Liu Rong.

Although Liu Rong was greedy, he was very loyal and never took advantage of others.

In the evening, they even delivered a can of food, while Mu Chen delivered a stack of manuscript paper and ten stamps.

Seeing their belongings, I was both amused and exasperated.

There's not much work left now, just land clearing, so Lin Chuchu is working alongside the others.

As they were working, a person suddenly appeared beside them—it was Liu Rong.

"Chuchu, I have a secret to tell you. I heard that the clothing factory in the county is hiring an accountant. You used to be a high school student and you were a good student. Why don't you give it a try?"
