Chapter 7 Making Mushroom Sauce

Seeing that it was still early, and remembering the delicious aroma from the state-run restaurant, Lin Chuchu gritted her teeth and decided to go and have a good meal.

He was alone and didn't eat much.

Lin Chuchu ordered some rice and a plate of braised pork.

After taking a bite of the meat, Lin Chuchu almost burst into tears. It was so delicious, so incredibly delicious.

Lin Chuchu also asked for a bottle of soda, which is definitely a luxury for most people.

My stomach was round and full, but there was still a third of the meat and vegetables left. This is not an era where we can waste food.

Lin Chuchu took out a lunchbox and put the meat and vegetables inside.

While I was packing, a woman's voice suddenly came from inside.

"Little Chuchu, what are you doing here?"

The person who came was Meng Wanyin. In her opinion, Lin Chuchu should be broke, so why would she come to a state-run restaurant to eat?

Lin Chuchu glanced at her casually, then her gaze fell on the middle-aged man beside her.

But I only glanced at it casually.

"I've saved up some money and I'm really craving meat, so I'm coming to the state-run restaurant to treat myself."

Lin Chuchu answered shyly, with a hint of embarrassment.

Meng Wanyin smiled sarcastically, "Chuchu, everyone goes through this. You can't spend money recklessly just to save face."

Lin Chuchu didn't reply, but put away her lunchbox. "Sister Wanyin, I'm going back now. I've already missed half a day of work today."

After saying that, he walked out without waiting for her reply.

The middle-aged man looked away. "Wanyin, who is that?"

Meng Wanyin scoffed, "Just a poor educated youth sent to the countryside."

Being both poor and ugly, Meng Wanyin now looks down on Lin Chuchu.

After a month of working away from home, exposed to wind and rain every day, Lin Chuchu deliberately painted her face yellow and grew her hair a little long to cover one eye, making her appearance unclear.

She was no different from a village girl from the countryside.

Lin Chuchu was surprised to run into Meng Wanyin and was also curious about the middle-aged man beside her.

Judging from her appearance, she seems to have done well on the test.

Because there were too many documents to translate, Lin Chuchu devoted all her free time to translation.

She heard from Liu Rong that Meng Wanyin had indeed passed the exam, but she didn't care.

Some people like to show off, but she prefers to live a peaceful life until the college entrance examination.

Fortunately, she didn't have much contact with the people at the educated youth settlement, otherwise her translated manuscripts might have been seen by others.

These translations were similar to the previous ones, all magazine translations. I gradually became more proficient at it, and my work efficiency improved significantly.

That day, Lin Chuchu was cleaning all the mushrooms and chopping them into mushroom studs when Liu Rong heard the noise and came out.

"Chuchu, what are you doing?"

There was a lot of clanging and banging early in the morning, and he thought they were stewing meat.

"Brother Rong, I want to make some mushroom sauce. I just happened to pick some red chilies."

Liu Rong's eyes lit up. The mushroom sauce was ready, and it tasted much better than stewed mushrooms.

"Um... Chuchu, I also picked a lot of mushrooms. Could you help me cook them? Oh, and I have canned yellow peaches. I'll use them as a thank you gift."

Friendships should be based on reciprocity; there should be give and take. Liu Rong also didn't want to take advantage of others.

Lin Chuchu nodded, "Okay, bring it here." Lin Chuchu picked a lot, almost 20 jin in total, while Liu Rong only got 10 jin.

Lin Chuchu put the mushrooms together, while Liu Rong started chopping chili peppers.

The educated youth group across the street also saw the two of them and pointed at them. They also wanted to replace the mushrooms with mushroom sauce, but they were too embarrassed to come to Lin Chuchu.

Once everything was almost ready, Lin Chuchu took another piece of pork belly, chopped it into small pieces, and mixed it into the mushrooms.

Heat a wok, add oil, and once the oil is hot, add minced garlic, scallions, chili peppers, and soybean paste collected from the villagers.

Once the aroma is released, add the minced meat and mushrooms to the pan and stir-fry together.

Liu Rong paced back and forth outside the door. The aroma wafted out, and he swallowed hard; the smell was simply too enticing.

I never expected Chu Chu to have this skill.

With mushroom sauce, I can eat cornbread whenever I don't feel like cooking.

Not only did Liu Rong salivate at the smell, but the other educated youth also watched with longing.

After the mushroom sauce was put into the canning jars, the 30 jin of mushrooms shrank significantly, and only about 20 jin were produced.

"Chuchu, how is it? Is it done?"

The stirring stopped, and Liu Rong asked impatiently.

Lin Chuchu answered loudly, "Okay, it's ready. I'll put it in the pot now."

Lin Chuchu divided the mushroom sauce into three bowls, each about the same size.

Lin Chuchu took the mushroom sauce out and placed it in the yard.

He handed the larger portion to Liu Rong, and covered the rest, placing it under the window.

Liu Rong carefully took it. "Can we eat the mushroom sauce now?"

“You can eat it. If you can’t finish it when you get back, just put it in the jar. I put in a lot of salt, so it won’t spoil in a short time.”

She didn't mention that there was some meat in it; he would find out when he ate it.

Wang Zhaodi walked over and said, "Chuchu, what are you making? It smells delicious."

Wang Zhaodi's family was of modest means and they rarely ate meat throughout the year.

The mushroom sauce smelled so good that she couldn't resist going over to it, hoping that Chu Chu might give her some.

Before Lin Chuchu could speak, Liu Rong spoke up for her, "What else could it be? Those are mushrooms that Chuchu picked herself. If you want them, you can have Chuchu cook them for you. Just pay her a processing fee. I even gave her a can of them."

Trading canned goods for mushroom sauce? She couldn't bear to part with it; she'd rather eat that stuff herself.

Lin Chuchu smiled and said, "If you want to make it, that's fine too. But you'll have to prepare your own oil, salt, and sauce, as well as red chili peppers, which are essential. Of course, the processing fee doesn't have to be for canned goods; other foods are also acceptable."
