"Doesn't looking at them evoke a lot of emotions?"
Lin Chuchu was stunned for a moment, looking at the people opposite her with a surprised expression. The people opposite her were a middle-aged couple.
The speaker was a middle-aged man. "I'm not just expressing my feelings, I just want to say that China is getting stronger and stronger, and more and more people can travel by train."
Lin Chuchu sighed, "A few years ago, who would have thought that distance between the north and south of the country would no longer be a barrier, and that people could reach each other by train and plane?"
A hint of surprise flashed in the middle-aged man's eyes. "Young comrade is right, but China is still too weak. If we want our economy to develop, we still need to rely on a certain number of talented people."
Lin Chuchu didn't respond, she just smiled and remained silent.
"This young comrade must be someone special, right? He must be a talent needed by the country, otherwise he certainly wouldn't have been able to buy a sleeper ticket."
Lin Chuchu didn't really want to talk, but the other person seemed oblivious.
Lin Chuchu had no choice but to give a few perfunctory replies.
"I'm just an ordinary worker, not some kind of talent."
Seeing that Lin Chuchu spoke casually and didn't say another word, the middle-aged man frowned. Aren't young people these days the ones who love to show off the most?
That makes it really hard for him to catch.
"Young comrade, you are so modest."
As he spoke, he took out a business card from his bag and handed it to Lin Chuchu.
Lin Chuchu had no choice but to accept it; she hadn't expected this thing to appear so early.
When Lin Chuchu saw the words "Beautiful Country" before the company name, a look of understanding flashed in her eyes.
“I am an overseas Chinese who made some money in the United States. I came back to invest. You look like a capable young lady. Would you be willing to study abroad with us? After all, with your talent, it would be a waste for you to stay in China.”
Talent? How would the other party know what her talents are?
Now she finally realized that the other person was after her.
She put the business card into her handbag, feeling more wary.
"I'm sorry, I don't want to go abroad. I'm fine in China."
As soon as he finished speaking, the middle-aged woman opposite him frowned. "Young comrade, you should think it over carefully. Opportunities to go abroad are rare. Land is incredibly valuable overseas. Earning your first 100... is quite achievable."
She pronounced the word "ten thousand" vaguely, but her voice was alluring and captivating.
Lin Chuchu smiled enigmatically, "Since you two say that, I thought you knew me quite well. I don't know either of you. How do you know me?"
After speaking, he stared intently at the two of them, not missing a single expression from them.
The two exchanged a glance, surprised by Lin Chuchu's wariness.
The middle-aged man smiled and said, "Young comrade, you flatter me. I have never met you before, but I feel that you are extraordinary and talented, so I couldn't help but extend an invitation."
Lin Chuchu couldn't help but laugh. "Really? You guys make me think you're human traffickers. My family is all here, and I'm not considering going abroad."
After saying that, Lin Chuchu turned her head away and refused to look at them.
The middle-aged man looked rather grim. They had both brought up the topic of making big money, but the other party remained unmoved.
He went to great lengths to find out Lin Chuchu's background: a translator, an undervalued researcher, whose partner was labeled a traitor. Logically, she shouldn't have rejected the offer.
Lin Chuchu picked up a book out of boredom and started reading; the guard had been gone for quite a while.
Just as he finished thinking it to himself, the guard returned with a thermos.
"Comrade Lin, I'm sorry, the water in the sleeper car over here hasn't been heated yet. I'll go to the hard seat car over there to get some water."
After saying that, he placed Lin Chuchu's water glass on the small table next to him.
Lin Chuchu smiled and thanked them, carefully observing the expressions of the three men. They didn't make eye contact, so it seemed the guard didn't know them.
How did the other person find out about her? It seems they know what she does for a living, and her superiors are unlikely to disclose her information to anyone else. So who could it be? And what is their purpose?
Also, how did the other party know she was on this train?
One question after another loomed in her mind. While pondering the situation, Lin Chuchu took out a pager and told her boss what had happened, explaining the other party's company and their overseas Chinese identity.
The leader replied quickly, telling her to wait and not to alert the enemy, as they would find out the other party's purpose.
Because she encountered two strangers with ulterior motives, Lin Chuchu went to rest on the upper bunk before it got dark, leaving the lower bunk for the guard.
She wanted to know where the two people got off, so she often kept an eye on the two people opposite her.
The next day, the two finally got off the train at a station.
Lin Chuchu sent another message to her superiors.
Back in the familiar deserted city, the same driver who had picked them up last time was there.
The driver looked at the two of them with a disbelief. "I don't know what you're doing here. There's nowhere to visit. Are you here to pay respects to your ancestors?"
Lin Chuchu really didn't know how to answer that question. Just then, the driver sped away, leaving the two of them bewildered in the wind.
No one picked them up this time, not because the vehicle broke down, but because they didn't want to attract attention, since it was a military vehicle. So they had to come by themselves.
It was still that deserted county town, only a bit colder than before.
Soon, a car came to pick them up. When they arrived at the research lab, they handed in their pagers. The two of them didn't plan to go see their teachers right away, since it was almost lunchtime.
Soon, the elevator in the basement opened, and a group of people in white coats came out.
