Chapter 176 Night Shift

Chapter 177 Night Shift

"Xiping, what should we do?"

Wang Jianshe and Chen Weiguo were dumbfounded. If these jackals held a grudge against them, the livestock on the farm would probably be wiped out in the end.

If that were the case, their sins would be enormous.

"What can we do? Find them and kill them." What could Sheng Xiping say?

This is no longer just a matter for these two people; it's a matter for the entire forest farm. There's no need to say anything; just get to work.

It's just a few jackals. We'll take them down one by one, or two by two. How can we let them run rampant?

"We'll call a few people later, and we'll take turns on duty at the breeding site tonight."

We'll adapt to the situation. If those jackals come, we'll fight them, taking down as many as we can.

"We'll follow the trail tomorrow to catch up on the rest. We can't feel at ease until we've taken care of everything," Sheng Xiping said, outlining his plan.

Jackals are clever and cunning; they are not easily caught using snares or traps.

So Sheng Xiping decided to take turns keeping watch at night, and to strike immediately if there was any disturbance.

Wang Jianshe and Chen Weiguo had long since lost their own agenda and could only listen to whatever Sheng Xiping said.

And so, everyone reached an agreement.

In the afternoon, Sheng Xiping led his group of friends to the security department, where they received several guns, and Li Zhenggang also provided them with a lot of bullets.

"Logically, the security department should be in charge of this, but we don't know much about hunting, we don't understand the habits of the prey, and we don't know how to hunt them."

"Xiping, I'll have to trouble you to lead the team. Just let me know what you need." Li Zhenggang's words were quite reasonable.

After everyone left the security office, Zhang Zhijun muttered to himself.

"I think I can see it now. Those guys are just cowards and don't dare to step forward."

This isn't the time for them to boss everyone around and give orders like they usually do. Now they're all shrinking back; they're all cowards.

Upon hearing this, Sheng Xiping and the others couldn't help but laugh.

People tend to seek advantage and avoid harm, but few dare to face difficulties head-on.

The security personnel had all heard that jackals were difficult to deal with, and they were afraid of making any mistakes, so they dared not show their faces.

"It's alright, it's better if they don't take the lead. We can wait until we take it down and save ourselves the trouble of sharing it with them."

They say a newborn calf is not afraid of a tiger, and this group of young men certainly embodies that spirit.

Pan Fusheng, on the other end, looked completely unconcerned. "With Brother Xiping here, what are we afraid of? Right?"

"Yeah, what are we afraid of? Let's just do it."

After the two children said that, Wang Jianshe and Chen Weiguo perked up.

"By the way, are we going to have to spend the night in that little shed at the farm? There's nothing to do at night, so why don't we just boil some bones and gnaw on them?"

Wang Jianshe suddenly remembered that the pig they had rescued had its meat divided up, but a lot of bones were still at home.

I didn't have anything to do in the evening, so I took some food and cooked a pot of it.

They sat by the stove, gnawing on bones, warm and comfortable—how wonderful!

When Wang Jianshe said that, everyone's eyes lit up. "Wow, that's great!"

So the group of young men went to Wang Jianshe's house and filled a large basin with bones.

The agricultural team's breeding farm was not far from the collective households. It was also a large courtyard, surrounded by wooden poles, about the height of a person.

There are two log cabins made of mud and straw facing the entrance of the courtyard.

The small room at the east end is where the pigstykeepers sleep at night, while the large room outside has two large stoves with twelve-inch pots on top, which are used to feed the pigs.

These days, pigs are fed wet feed.

Put the crushed bean pods, bean chaff, corn kernels, pig feed, or cilantro into a pot, add water, bring it to a boil, and then put it into a bucket to feed the pigs.

Just preparing these two large pots of pig feed in the morning would be exhausting, not to mention having to fetch water.

So they don't raise many pigs here, only about forty or fifty.

Unlike later generations, where pigs were fed dry feed and one person could raise hundreds of pigs.

Besides pigs, there are also fifty or sixty sheep. In spring, summer and autumn, they are driven out to graze on grass, and in winter, corn stalks and bean stalks are chopped to feed them.

Fortunately, it's not as troublesome as feeding pigs; you just need to chop the fodder into shorter pieces.

In any case, no matter what the job was, there was never an easy one in the agricultural team.

Old Hu arranged for several workers who were injured at work and could no longer work on the mountain to take care of the livestock here.

Anyway, the company pays me a salary and just assigns me some work to do.

The forestry industry has a high accident rate, and many people are unable to continue logging due to work injuries.

Those with a little education can be assigned to schools as teachers or in charge of logistics or something similar.

What to do with those who are uneducated? They can only be assigned to agricultural teams; there's nothing we can do about it.

There are four people at this end of the farm, working day and night shifts. Upon learning that Sheng Xiping and his team would be on night duty, the two on the night shift went home.

"Xiping, the comrades on the day shift have already repaired the broken parts of the garden cane, and they've also checked out the pigsty and sheepfold."

"I'm counting on you guys here. You absolutely must find a way to kill those jackals and stop them from harming our pigs and sheep."

Before leaving, zookeeper Lao Li didn't forget to give Sheng Xiping and the others some instructions.

Besides the two large pots for feeding the pigs, there is also a small pot with six seals, which the pig feeders usually use for cooking.

After the zookeeper left, Sheng Xiping and the others put the pot on the stove in the inner room, added water, and started stewing the bones.

While the bones were simmering inside, Sheng Xiping and the others split into two groups, carrying guns and patrolling the yard. They would immediately raise an alarm if anything seemed amiss.

As darkness fell outside, the aroma of stewing bones gradually wafted out of the house.
