Chapter 209 Lynx Hunts Roe Deer
"Is this what it sounds like when a roe deer calls?" Wang Jianshe and Chen Weiguo exchanged glances, somewhat incredulous.
This was the first time they had ever heard a roe deer call, and they never expected it to make such a noise.
"We'll go with you." The two of them got up from the ground and followed Sheng Xiping quietly outside.
"No need, you haven't been trained in night vision, you won't be able to see anything even if you come out."
On the night of the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, the moon was just a thin crescent, and there was not much light outside.
"It's okay, I have a flashlight." Wang Jianshe took a flashlight out of his pocket.
He wanted to go and see if it was a roe deer, to confirm it by hearing its call.
Sheng Xiping ignored Wang Jianshe and quietly went outside.
Before Wang Jianshe could even turn on his flashlight, suddenly, there was a lot of noise coming from the woods.
A rapid rustling sound disappeared into the distance.
"What happened? Did they run away?" Wang Jianshe was stunned and asked softly.
"Hmm, they probably saw us, right? Wild animals have pretty good eyesight."
Sheng Xiping wasn't sure either, since it was pitch black outside and he could only vaguely see a shadow running into the distance.
Just then, a loud scraping sound rang out, mixed with the sound of thin twigs snapping.
Then came several heavy breathing sounds, not human sounds, but clearly the roe deer struggling to breathe as something bit its throat.
Sheng Xiping's eyes narrowed, and he dashed out in a flash, startling Wang Jianshe and Chen Weiguo.
They wanted to call out to Sheng Xiping, but dared not make a sound, so they could only follow behind him and come out of the shack.
It was pitch black outside, and Wang Jianshe and Chen Weiguo couldn't see anything either. Just as they were about to call out to Sheng Xiping, a hand covered their mouths.
"Don't make a sound." It was Sheng Xiping's voice.
"Squat down, don't make any noise, be careful when you squat down," Sheng Xiping whispered to the two of them.
"You brought a flashlight, right? Don't turn it on yet, wait a bit."
Wang Jianshe and Chen Weiguo nodded, and following Sheng Xiping's instructions, the three of them squatted down in a neat row, hiding in the tall bushes.
Ahead, a whooshing sound came from the throat, a low growl.
Everyone had heard that sound before; it was from the time they bombarded the mountain fox's den.
"Is it a civet? Is a civet hunting a roe deer?" Wang Jianshe's eyes widened.
Is that exciting? It's their first time staying in the mountains, and they encountered a civet cat catching a roe deer at night?
"It should be. Don't make a sound, wait a moment." Sheng Xiping had already figured out what kind of wild animal was hunting the roe deer.
A low growl came from the woods ahead, followed by panting.
It's estimated that the roe deer is completely dead, and the civet has released its grip and is resting.
None of the three dared to move. If they startled the mountain leopard at this moment, it might pounce on them and bite them as if they were roe deer.
The key issue was that it was nighttime, and there was a forest in front of them. They could only vaguely tell from the sounds that the mountain fox was not far away, but they were not sure exactly where it was.
They couldn't see the mountain lemurs, but the mountain lemurs were nocturnal and could see them.
It's nighttime now, and it's the mountain fox's domain.
These creatures are agile and nimble; they might not be a match for them even during the day, let alone at night.
The only thing we can do right now is wait for an opportunity, a chance that will be a sure thing.
Otherwise, they would have to wait until the civets had eaten their fill and left before they could go back to their huts.
Just then, a whooshing sound came from nearby; it must be the mountain cats feeding.
The mountain cat doesn't eat quietly; it tears and roars as it eats, a behavior typical of felines that guard their food.
It's reminding other animals that it's here and they shouldn't come and disturb it.
The howling of the mountain fox echoed vividly in the silent valley.
Judging from the sound, the mountain fox was about fifty or sixty meters away from Sheng Xiping and the others.
"Xiping, hurry up and think of a solution, otherwise, the roe deer will be eaten by the mountain weasels!" Wang Jianshe whispered in Sheng Xiping's ear.
Just as Sheng Xiping was about to speak, he suddenly heard a sharp, piercing sound cutting through the air above him. "Whoosh—"
Sheng Xiping hurriedly looked up at the sky and saw a black shadow fly quickly over his head.
With a sound of twigs rubbing together, it must have landed in the woods ahead.
"Woo-woo-woo-woo" the thing made a few sounds like that, which must have been the noises heard in the shack earlier.
Judging from the way it flew just now, it must be some kind of large bird, probably trying to get a share of the pie.
The raccoon's roar grew louder; it was a sign of its defiance towards the large bird perched on the branch.
"Another one trying to take advantage," Chen Weiguo muttered to himself.
"Damn it, nobody can take it from me, it should all be mine," Sheng Xiping snorted.
“Let’s stand up slowly together. Jianshe, you turn on the flashlight, I’ll fire the gun, and Weiguo will protect me.”
Sheng Xiping could roughly determine the location of the mountain fox, but he wasn't sure about the specifics.
Have Wang Jianshe turn on his flashlight to illuminate the area so he can accurately fire at the mountain fox's location and aim for a single, decisive shot.
If the first shot misses and the lynx attacks, Chen Weiguo can fire a follow-up shot.
Of course, more likely, the roe deer was scared away by his shot, which would be fine too, as they could get a free roe deer.
