Chapter 209 The Roe Deer Ran Away

Chapter 210 The Roe Deer Ran Away

Sheng Xiping never expected that his rare overnight stay in the mountains would lead to him encountering a mountain weasel hunting a roe deer.

If he had known, he could have prepared in advance.

If nothing else works, use the tin foil from inside a cigarette box to wrap the front of the gun barrel.

The faint reflection of the tin foil can help to some extent, making the shot a little more accurate.

But the incident happened so suddenly, there was no time for him to prepare any of that. Right now, he could only rely on his hunter's instincts.

A gunshot rang out, startling the entire valley and the other three people sleeping in the shack.

"Who? What's going on?" Gao Haining, Zhang Zhijun, and the other two rushed out of the shack and asked loudly.

"It's nothing, we just encountered a civet cat catching a roe deer."

Sheng Xiping smiled and explained to Gao Haining and the others as he walked forward with his gun in hand.

That shot just now must have hit its target.

But Sheng Xiping dared not be careless. He remained vigilant and cautiously moved forward, ready to fire another shot at the suddenly attacking mountain fox.

However, at that moment, the flashlight in Wang Jianshe's hand suddenly went out.

"Construction, what's going on?"

Having already adapted to the light, the sudden darkness makes it impossible for anyone to see clearly in front of them for a short period of time.

"Damn, it looks like the light bulb burned out." Wang Jianshe patted the flashlight, but it wouldn't light up no matter what he did.

Frustrated, he had no choice but to unscrew the cover on the back of the flashlight, where a spare light bulb was located.

Suddenly the light went out, and his eyes couldn't adjust for a moment, so Sheng Xiping stopped walking.

Fortunately, Gao Haining and the others behind them also had flashlights. They quickly took them out and spread them out, and the front became bright again.

Using the light of his flashlight, Sheng Xiping walked quickly forward, wanting to see if the mountain fox was dead or not.

However, when he got closer, the scene before him made him curse. "Damn it, where the hell is the roe deer?"

Yes, all that was left was the lynx that had been shot in the head. The roe deer that had been lying on the ground, seemingly dead, was gone.

"Huh? The roe deer is gone?"

Wang Jianshe had just pried the spare light bulb out of the flashlight's back cover and hadn't even had a chance to replace it yet when he heard this. He didn't care about replacing it anymore and rushed over in a few steps.

Then, staring blankly at the snow-covered ground, he wondered, "Where's the roe deer?"

Sheng Xiping pointed to the line of footprints on the ground, "He ran away. This guy probably isn't quite dead yet. He escaped while your flashlight was off."

Although the mountain leopard is known as one of the three kings of the Northeast forests, it is relatively small in size compared to the tiger and leopard, and its teeth are not as long as its two older brothers.

Roe deer are larger and have thicker throats, so it's unlikely that a civet would bite the roe deer's throat completely.

Therefore, it is very likely that the roe deer used all its strength to shake off the civet cub that was clinging to it, and collapsed from exhaustion, but did not actually die.

It's also possible that the civet heard something and let go in advance, and the roe deer didn't die, but just suffocated and fainted.

When the flashlight suddenly went out, everyone's attention was on Wang Jianshe, and they overlooked the roe deer on the ground.

The roe deer seized the opportunity and ran away.

"What should we do? Chase after it? Or wait until dawn? I reckon that roe deer is injured and probably can't run very far."

Wang Jianshe looked at the footprints on the ground and the dead civet cat, and hesitated for a moment.

Just as Sheng Xiping was about to speak, something suddenly fluttered up from above his head.

"Whoosh—whoosh—" the creature cried as it flew.

"Damn it, that annoying thing, it's trying to get something for nothing." Sheng Xiping looked up at the large bird flying past and cursed.

"Weiguo, follow me with your flashlights, let's go chase the roe deer."

"Jianshe, you guys take the civets back to their hut. We'll be back in a bit."

Although the roe deer escaped, it was bitten by a mountain weasel and was seriously injured and weak, so it definitely couldn't have gone far.

The large bird clearly understood this principle, which is why it followed the fleeing roe deer, hoping to have a feast after the roe deer died.

Sheng Xiping originally planned to wait until dawn to chase after them, since it's easy to get lost in the deep mountains and forests even in broad daylight, let alone at night.

He brought a few brothers with him, and he didn't want them to take any risks easily.

But this big bird is so annoying, always thinking about taking advantage of what's readily available. How can that be allowed?

Sheng Xiping dared to snatch a roe deer from a mountain cat's mouth, how could he let a hairy beast steal the fruits of his victory?

So they simply led Chen Weiguo along, and the two of them no longer needed to follow the footprints on the ground; they could just follow the bird directly.

That guy is flying in the sky, he can see better than they can.

Sheng Xiping and the others built their shelter on the hillside. The roe deer was seriously injured and had difficulty running, so it went down the hillside to the bottom of the ravine.

Actually, the roe deer was already at its last gasp; it was just desperately trying to escape. So, after running a short distance, the roe deer began to stagger.

Eagle owls are large birds of prey that hunt at night, and they have excellent eyesight.

Seeing that the roe deer had stopped, the eagle owl perched on a nearby branch, making a whimpering sound.

Of course, it didn't know that its cry would actually give away its location and lead Sheng Xiping to the right place.

Chen Weiguo, with a flashlight in hand and Sheng Xiping, carrying a gun, followed the sound of the eagle owl and arrived at the bottom of the valley.

Sheng Xiping had already adjusted to the darkness and saw the roe deer swaying forward ahead. He then held the gun to his face, pulled the trigger, and fired another shot.
