Chapter 300 The Liu Brothers

Zhang Shuzhen was busy when she heard the dogs barking outside.

Hunting dogs are intelligent and don't bother people. They also have different ways of dealing with people coming into the house.

The dog will bark desperately when a stranger enters the house, but its barking will be different if it is someone it is familiar with.

If they are particularly familiar with someone, such as Chen Weiguo or Wang Jianshe, the dogs will usually bark and whimper.

Several large dogs were barking outside, and the little tiger Hua Hua and the two puppies Zhao Cai and Wang Fu inside the house also heard the noise.

The names of the two puppies were chosen by Chen Feng and Sheng Xitai after discussion.

The two puppies were Erlang Shen's offspring, and they resembled Erlang Shen with their spotted coats. Originally, everyone said that following the pattern of the leopard, they could be named something like Flower Dragon or Flower Wolf.

But Sheng Xitai and Chen Feng both thought that was too old-fashioned, so they insisted on naming them Zhaocai (meaning "bringing wealth") and Wangfu (meaning "prosperity").

Upon hearing this, the Sheng family thought that although the two names were not as majestic as the names of hunting dogs, they had good meanings, so they simply decided to rely on the two little ones.

And so, the two puppies got different names.

Zhao Cai and Wang Fu heard the noise, stood up from their nest, and barked at the outside.

However, the puppy was still small, and its voice was so soft and cute that it had no intimidating power at all.

As for Hua Hua, it's not a guard dog, so it doesn't care about these things.

Lying inside the flower basket, with its eyes still closed, its big tail was still swishing back and forth.

The dogs outside were whimpering, and they sounded a little anxious. Zhang Shuzhen immediately recognized them as acquaintances.

So he put on his shoes, went out to look, and as soon as he opened the door, he saw the brothers Liu Yujiang and Liu Yuhe.

"Hey, what brings you two brothers here? Not busy today? Come on in, it's cold outside." Zhang Shuzhen warmly invited the Liu brothers inside.

"It's snowing, isn't it? I'm just here to sit down and chat with my uncle and Xiping for a while.

"What? Nobody's home?" The Liu brothers chuckled as they stepped into the house, putting down the things they were carrying.

"Auntie, these are soybeans, red beans, sticky corn, sticky sorghum, and millet that we harvested ourselves."

When my aunt has some free time, she makes some sticky rice cakes for her younger siblings.

Forestry workers receive wages and benefits, making them better off than agricultural workers in every way.

But there's one thing that makes them inferior to farmers in the fields: their love of food.

In the Dajianchang commune, in addition to earning work points by cultivating the brigade's land and receiving grain in the fall, each household had its own plot of land and could also cultivate small patches of wasteland.

In the main fields, corn, beans, and sorghum are planted. In private plots and small wastelands, some sticky corn, sticky millet, sticky sorghum, small beans, peas, and other miscellaneous grains and beans are planted.

No matter what it is, hardworking and simple rural wives can prepare it into all sorts of dishes to enrich the dining table.

For example, in summer we make sticky rice cakes, in winter we bake sticky rice cakes, steam sticky rice dumplings, and so on. We make them in different ways, and everyone in the family loves them.

In comparison, the meals at the forest farm families' tables were relatively simple.

There was no other way. The forest farm did not allow individuals to farm. Each family only had a small vegetable garden, which was not even enough to eat. They had to buy vegetables from the agricultural team for winter storage. Where could they grow various grains and beans?

"Oh dear, look at you, you've come all this way, why did you bring so much stuff?"

When Zhang Shuzhen saw them, she realized that the two brothers were really honest; the two sealed flour sacks contained quite a lot of things.

"Auntie, this year is a good year, the crops in the fields are growing very well."

My family has a lot of small plots of land and some wasteland, but we've harvested quite a bit of grain. Don't worry, eat as much as you want; I'll get you more if you need more."

Liu Yujiang explained with a smile. The two families get along well, like family, so there's no need to be so calculating.

"Hey? Where are my uncle and Xiping? They're still at work in this snowy weather?"

Liu Yujiang glanced into the room and, not seeing Sheng Liancheng and Sheng Xiping, casually asked a question.

"Oh, I was just called to a meeting by the staff."

"Isn't winter production about to start? They're having a meeting to arrange this year's production tasks; they'll be back in a bit. You two come in and have a seat."

Zhang Shuzhen glanced at the clock on the wall; it was almost 2 a.m. when the Sheng family father and son were called to a meeting.

The forestry station's loudspeaker was just announcing that they should be back by now.

As soon as Zhang Shuzhen finished speaking, the dogs outside started squeaking again.

The commotion this time was even more enthusiastic than when the Liu brothers entered the door earlier. It was obvious that the Sheng family father and son had returned.

"Hurry up, you two. Yujiang and Yuhe are here. They brought us two bags of sticky corn, sticky sorghum, and red beans."

Zhang Shuzhen hurriedly turned around, pushed open the door, and called to Sheng Liancheng and his son to come inside quickly and stop playing with the dog.

"My older brother and the others are here?" Sheng Xiping was taken aback. He didn't even bother to coax the dog anymore and hurriedly stepped into the house.

"Hey, big brother, second brother, we haven't seen you two all autumn. Are you almost done with your work?"

As the old saying goes, three springs are not as busy as one autumn.

On the other side of the alkali field, they not only farmed, but also planted corn. In autumn, they were busy on both sides, harvesting crops, digging up ginseng for processing, and planting corn. They were much busier than ordinary agricultural teams.

Liu Yujiang is now the secretary of the alkali field brigade, and Liu Yuhe is the head of the security team and the militia platoon leader. The two brothers have been extremely busy this autumn.

Sheng Xiping wasn't idle either; the three brothers hadn't seen each other for quite some time.

"Yeah, once it snows, there won't be as much work. Next, we'll just be collecting wood for ginseng cultivation, cutting strips and making curtains, etc. There's no rush for these tasks; we can do them in the spring."

"It's been a while since I've come to visit Uncle and Aunt. There wasn't much work to do since it just snowed, so I came over for a visit."
