The meaning was clear: he also wanted something delicious.
"Oh my, Xinyu is craving it too, isn't he? Quick, cut the candy into four pieces with a knife, let him have a taste."
Zhang Shuzhen immediately knew what her grandson was doing, so she quickly called Sheng Xitai to cut some sugar and give some to Sheng Xinyu to taste.
The candy was too big; I didn't dare give Sheng Xinyu the whole thing, for fear he'd choke.
Upon hearing this, Sheng Xitai immediately took the candy to the kitchen, cut it into four pieces with a knife, and then stuffed one piece into Sheng Xinyu's mouth.
As soon as the sweet candy entered his mouth, Xiao Xinyu's eyes widened immediately. He sat down with a big smile and quietly ate the candy.
At this moment, Sheng Yunfang, who had gone to buy meat, came running back and shouted as soon as she entered the yard.
"Mom, I bought the meat. I finally managed to snag a piece, it weighs three pounds. Is that a lot?"
Zhang Shuzhen hurriedly went out of the house, took the piece of meat from her daughter's hand, and examined it. It seemed to be the front shoulder, not too fatty.
These days, everyone loves to eat fatty meat, and nobody cares about lean meat. For the same price, fatty meat tastes so much better.
"Okay, that's great. We'll chop it up and make dumplings this afternoon."
I'm a bit thin, but there's nothing I can do about it. I'm already lucky if I can even get a bite. At worst, I'll just add more lard when I'm preparing the filling.
Zhang Shuzhen casually placed the meat into a small bowl and put it on the shelf.
Then she beckoned her daughter into the house, saying, "Your sister-in-law bought you some pretty hair clips and ribbons for tying your hair. Come and take a look."
Inside the house, Zhou Qinglan distributed the things she had brought back to her younger brother-in-law and sister-in-law one by one, and gave the rest to her mother-in-law for safekeeping.
Then she sat on the kang (a heated brick bed), holding her sons in both arms, and played with them.
After all, they are mother and son, bound by blood. After spending some time together, Sheng Xinhua was no longer as awkward as before. He nestled in his mother's arms and smiled happily.
After chatting for a while, it was almost noon.
Normally, in the hot weather of July, we usually don't cook lunch. The porridge we make in the morning is still warm, so we just eat whatever we have.
But with Zhou Qinglan and Sheng Xi'an back today, plus Chen Feng and his sister, we can't just deal with things haphazardly anymore.
So Zhang Shuzhen called on the Sheng Yunfang sisters to hurry up and prepare some dishes and cook a pot of rice.
At noon, the family had a happy meal, and in the afternoon, Zhou Qinglan coaxed Sheng Xinhua and Sheng Xinyu to take a nap.
Sheng Xitai took Chen Feng and Chen Yue out to play, while Zhang Shuzhen chopped filling and kneaded dough with her two daughters.
After Sheng Xinhua and his brother fell asleep, Zhou Qinglan came out to help.
While the children were sleeping, the mother and her children quickly made dumplings. By the time Sheng Xinhua and Sheng Xinyu woke up, most of the dumplings had already been made.
Just then, Sheng Xitai and his group finished their outdoor adventures and brought back a small tray full of crayfish, along with half a bucket of water.
Sheng Xitai and Chen Feng coaxed the two Sheng brothers to eat from the tray, and then caught a small crayfish and let it crawl on the north kang (heated brick bed).
I must say, this thing is really good at soothing children. The two kids stared wide-eyed at the crayfish crawling backwards, and they didn't care about causing any trouble on the south kang (heated brick bed).
And so, the mother and her children smoothly finished making dumplings on the south kang (heated brick bed) and quickly took them to the outer room.
Around five o'clock, Zhang Shuzhen spoke up and told everyone to boil water to prepare dumplings. At 5:30, Sheng Liancheng was the first to return home.
As soon as he entered his own courtyard, Sheng Liancheng smelled the fresh aroma of chive filling.
"You made chive dumplings today? Oh, why are you cooking them in two pots at the same time?"
Sheng Liancheng knew that his eldest daughter-in-law and second son were coming back. He guessed that, given Zhang Shuzhen's usual style, the family would probably be making dumplings today.
Sure enough, as soon as I entered the house, I saw Zhang Shuzhen and Zhou Qinglan standing on the east and west sides in front of the stove, gently stirring the dumplings in the pot with spoons.
Sheng Liancheng was a little confused. How many dumplings had they made, and why were they cooking them in two pots?
"I made two kinds of fillings, chives and pork and celery and pork. You can eat whichever you like."
Zhang Shuzhen looked at the pot and laughed.
At this time, the chives usually start to bolt. Some people say that you can't cut the bolting chives, or they will die.
Zhang Shuzhen ignored all that; she was told to cut down two rows of chives that had just sprouted in the Sheng family's vegetable garden to make dumplings.
“They’ve been working hard at school every day and have lost weight. Let’s make them something nice to eat to help them recover.”
"Okay, you can arrange it as you see fit. I'm going to wash my hands."
Sheng Liancheng nodded, scooped out a basin of water, carefully washed his hands with soap, and then went back inside.
Upon entering the house, they discovered that not only had Sheng Xi'an and Zhou Qinglan returned, but there were also two other people in the house: Chen Feng and a little girl.
"Grandpa, you're back. Did you miss me? I'm here to freeload again, and this time I brought my little sister along."
As soon as Chen Feng saw Sheng Liancheng enter, he came over with a grin and asked with a smile.
"Of course I miss my grandson!"
"Is this your little sister, Xiaoyue'er? Oh my, what a pretty girl! Come here, let Grandpa take a look."
Sheng Liancheng hugged Chen Feng tightly, patted him on the shoulder, and then waved to Chen Yue.
Chen Yue obediently walked closer and greeted Sheng Liancheng, "Hello, Grandpa Sheng, I am Chen Yue."
"Oh, good, good, this child is really rare."
The Sheng family has more men than women. Sheng Xiping's generation had four sons and two daughters, but in Sheng Xinhua's generation, there are currently only two boys.
Sheng Liancheng longed for a granddaughter, so when he saw the well-behaved and adorable Chen Yue, he was naturally extremely fond of her, smiling kindly and lovingly at her.
"Come here and feel at home. Don't be shy. Tell your grandma what you want to eat."
"When you go out with your uncle, be careful. This place is full of mountains and rivers, so pay close attention." Sheng Liancheng gave him a few more words of advice out of concern.
