Chapter 41 Disciplining the Youngest Child

Once the second batch of buns is ready, put the lid on the pot.

These days, most pot lids are still made of wood, the kind with two semi-circular sections and a seam in the middle.

Therefore, it needs to be covered with a cloth to ensure that it is not breathable.

"Alright, this batch will be faster than the last one. We'll eat when your dad comes back in a little while."

As Zhang Shuzhen spoke, she raised her hand and patted her apron.

When she turned around, she saw her youngest son staring intently at the steamed buns over there.

Zhang Shuzhen frowned. This child has no sense of propriety.

"Get out of here. Your dad will be back in a minute. If he sees you standing here, he'll kick you a couple of times."

Zhang Shuzhen glared at her youngest son, "Hurry up and go to the garden and pick two heads of garlic. We'll be having steamed buns tonight, and we'll need garlic sauce for them, won't we?"

At this time, the garlic in the field had just grown and had not yet been harvested.

In a few days, after harvesting the garlic, let the land dry for a few days, then turn it over and plant cabbage.

"Okay, I understand."

Sheng Xitai stared at the steamed buns, his mouth watering. Who wouldn't be tempted by those fragrant meat buns?

Besides, he was starving when he came back from school, so how could he not be tempted by the steamed buns?

But Sheng Xitai also knew that although his parents loved him, the family rules could not be broken.

Without his parents' approval, he wouldn't dare touch even the best food.

So, Sheng Xitai took one last, reluctant look at the steamed buns before going to the garden and picking a few heads of fresh garlic.

The garlic grown here is mostly the purple-skinned kind, with small bulbs and few cloves; sometimes it's even a single bulb.

So Sheng Xitai picked a few more and washed them in the yard.

Then peel off the skin petal by petal, wash it again, and bring it into the house for his mother, making sure it's clean.

"Isn't he quite capable at his work? Why is he so clueless every day?"

No one dared to touch the steamed buns; they weren't going to grow legs and run away.

Do you really need to stare at me like that?

"Eating ten or twenty minutes later won't make you starve, will it?"

Taking the opportunity, Zhang Shuzhen couldn't help but teach her youngest son a lesson.

Well, these days, not many parents spoil their kids.

Sheng Xitai is the youngest in the family, so he is already considered more favored than the older children.

You can spoil your child, but you have to be careful about what you do and how you do it.

There were only a few children in the family before. When the others got older, they didn't compete with the youngest one. They all gave in to him, and the parents were a little biased towards him, so that was that.

But we can't keep doing this. The eldest son already has a girlfriend, and who knows when his new wife will come into the family.

If the children in the family are still so unruly, what will the new daughter-in-law think?

What happens next? If there are younger relatives in the future, will Sheng Xitai, the uncle, compete with his nephew for food? That would be unreasonable.

So Zhang Shuzhen thought that she would have to discipline her youngest son's gluttonous habit from now on, so that people wouldn't laugh at him.

Sheng Xitai wasn't annoyed by his mother's words; he just chuckled and scratched his head, "I'm just hungry."

The little guy tried to explain, but of course, he couldn't help glancing at the steamed bun a couple of times.

Before Zhang Shuzhen could say anything more, Zhou Qinglan came out of the house.

"Auntie, are you going to chop garlic? Let me do it."

There were only so many buns, and they were all wrapped up. When Zhou Qinglan saw that she didn't have much to do, she felt bad.

She even offered to help with the chores and cook together, but everything was already prepared beforehand, leaving her no chance to lift a finger. How unfair is that?

So Zhou Qinglan was thinking of finding something to do, as she really felt uncomfortable just sitting in the room waiting for dinner.

Zhang Shuzhen probably noticed it too, so she put the cleaver and garlic on the chopping block.

"Okay, then you can chop the garlic. You don't need to chop all of these, leave a few cloves, your uncle likes to eat garlic cloves."

Many people in Northeast China love to eat garlic cloves, whether it's dumplings, noodles, or meat. They feel that without garlic, the food just doesn't taste right.

That's why they say, "If you eat meat but not garlic, you'll lose half the flavor!"

Fresh garlic, crisp and tender with less spiciness, is more popular because it's available for a shorter period.

Anyway, around this time of year, Sheng Liancheng loves to eat a whole head of fresh garlic whenever he eats, regardless of whether there are any other dishes or not.

Zhou Qinglan picked up the cleaver, neatly smashed the garlic, and then chopped it a few more times.

Minced garlic was placed in a small bowl. Zhang Shuzhen then took a large glass jar, removed the corn kernels from the top, and poured some soy sauce into the bowl.

"Honey, would you like garlic sauce or chili oil?"

If you want chili oil, we have dried chilies at home, I'll fry some for you.

We have vinegar at home, but we're out of sesame oil.

Zhang Shuzhen didn't know Zhou Qinglan's tastes and was worried that she wouldn't be used to the Sheng family's way of eating, so she took the opportunity to find out.

"Auntie, don't bother with all that. I'll just have garlic sauce, and a little vinegar will do."

Upon hearing this, Zhou Qinglan quickly replied.

Zhou Qinglan had never tried bear meat filling buns before, but she smelled that enticing aroma as soon as she entered the room.

These steamed buns smell so good that even without any dipping sauce, they're so delicious you'll want to swallow your tongue.

Zhou Qinglan couldn't imagine eating meat-filled buns with sesame oil.

Sheng Xiping leaned against the door frame, watching his mother and Zhou Qinglan chatting and laughing as they worked in the kitchen, and felt quite content.

He spent ten years inside in his previous life, and his second son went to Fushun to take over.

The mother passed away before her daughter-in-law entered the house, and she never even had a chance to spend time with her.

If he had married earlier in his life, given his mother's personality, she probably would have gotten along well with her daughter-in-law.
